- World Intellectual Property Day is observed annually on 26 April.
- The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to “raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life” and “to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe”

RBI became the first APAC central bank to begin interest rate easing cycle
- The Reserve Bank of India is the first central bank in the Asia-Pacific region to begin an explicit interest rate easing cycle
- The monetary policy committee led by Shaktikanta Das cut the repo rate by 0.25 percentage point in February 2019 and again by 0.25 percentage point in March 2019, taking the total repo rate down to 6 per cent, the lowest in about nine years since 2010
- Inflation at 2.9 per cent has remained within the RBI’s comfort zone of 4 per cent (+/- 2 per cent).
- Fitch has predicted GDP growth rate of 6.8% in FY20 for India.

NCLT approves merger of IndusInd Bank with Bharat Financial Inclusion (BFIL)
- NCLT Mumbai approves IndusInd Bank and Bharat Financial Inclusion Ltd merger
- As per the report, the merger is expected to complete within 2-4 weeks. Post-merger, microfinance firm Bharat Financial will become a subsidiary of the private lender

BuyUcoin Introduces first Indian platform for wholesale Cryptocurrency trading
- BuyUcoin, is a New Delhi based Indian Cryptocurrency Exchange, which is the second oldest Cryptocurrency Exchange in India, has announced the launch of a new and unique platform for wholesale cryptocurrency trading which allows its users to trade on a large scale with low price fluctuations.
- The platform currently works on free trading model, charges zero fee on any trade.
- The platform is aptly described and known as OTC (Over-the-counter) desk. It is preferred by traders who deal with cryptocurrency in bulk and want to resist much price fluctuations during the trade.

Etihad becomes first major airline to fly plastic-free
- The UAE’s flag carrier Etihad Airways has become the first airline in the Gulf region to operate a flight without any single-use plastics on board. The objective is to raise awareness about pollution
- The milestone flight is part of Etihad’s pledge to reduce single-use plastic usage by 80 per cent not just in-flight, but across the entire organisation by the end of 2022

Iran, Pakistan to set up joint border ‘Reaction Force’
- Iranian President Hassan Rohani and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan have agreed to set up a joint border “reaction force” to counter terrorism
- Both the nations have decided to collaborate to form the joint quick reaction force by increasing cooperation between border forces and intelligence agencies.

Ex-army chief Dalbir Singh Suhag appointed as India high commissioner to Seychelles
- Former Army chief Dalbir Singh Suhag has been appointed as India’s next high commissioner to Seychelles
- General (retired) Suhag was the Army chief from July 31, 2014, to December 31, 2016. He was also part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka in 1987.
- India is developing Assumption Island in Seychelles as a naval base to expand its footprint in the strategically-key region

Mini Ipe becomes first woman Zonal Manager of LIC
- Mini Ipe took charge as zonal manager of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), South Central Zone
- She is the first woman zonal manager (in-charge) of the corporation.
- LIC’s South Central Zone comprises the States of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
- Prior to the present assignment, she was executive director (International Operations) looking after the foreign operations of LIC’s subsidiaries, joint ventures and branches. She has also worked as director and CEO of LICHFL Financial Services Ltd.

Rana Dasgupta bags 2019 Tagore Literary Prize
- The second edition of Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize was awarded to author Rana Dasgupta for his 2010 novel “Solo”, a tale of estrangement and the ultimate failure of material existence.
- An amount of $10,000, a Tagore statue and a certificate for contribution to literature was given to Dasgupta
- The Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize for social achievement was awarded to Yohei Sasakawa, the World Health Organization Goodwill Ambassador for Leprosy Elimination, for “his incredible efforts to uproot leprosy and great contribution to world peace”.
- The Prize was also awarded to Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen as “a beacon of democracy”,

ABU Media Summit on Climate Action and Disaster Preparedness began in Kathmandu
- 5th Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Media Summit on Climate Action and Disaster Preparedness began in Kathmandu
- The theme of the two-day summit is “Media Solutions for Sustainable Future: Saving Lives, Building Resilient Communities”.
- Nepal’s Minister for Communication and Information Technology Gokul Prasad Baskota inaugurated the summit.
- The basic aim of the summit is to address the issue of fully utilizing media’s potential of accelerating climate action and disaster preparedness and connect stakeholders to media professionals for collaboration and joint practical projects.

23rd Asian Athletics Championship 2019
- The 23rd edition of the Asian Athletics Championship concluded in Doha, Qatar.
- India ended at the fourth spot in the medals tally with 3 Gold, 7 Silver and 7 Bronze. Bahrain topped the table with 11 Gold, 7 Silver and 4 Bronze. China was second with 10 Gold, 13 Silver and 7 Bronze
- The four-day event saw participation from 63 nations across the world.

- Anjum Moudgil and Divyansh Singh Panwar won the gold in the 10 metres Air Rifle Mixed Team event.
Badminton Asia Championships begins at Wuhan in China
- The Badminton Asia Championships began at Wuhan in China
- The Indian contingent comprises PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal in Women’s Singles, and Kidambi Srikanth and Sameer Verma in Men’s Singles.
- Dinesh Khanna who had become the Men’s Singles champion in 1965. Last year, Saina and HS Prannoy had won bronze medals
