59th Border Roads Organisation Raising Day
- The 59th Raising Day of Border Roads Organization (BRO) was celebrated on May 7, 2019.
- The BRO, was formed on 7 May 1960, is a leading road construction agency under the Ministry of Defence with a primary role of providing road connectivity in border areas.
- It executes road construction and maintenance works along the Northern and Western frontiers primarily to meet the strategic requirements of the Army and is responsible for over 53,000 Km roads.
- The organisation is now executing works with a combination of departmental, contractual and EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) mode, thus enhancing our capabilities manifold

Sebi allows FPI investment in municipal bonds
- SEBI allowed foreign portfolio investors can invest in municipal bonds.
- Reserve Bank of India permitted FPIs to invest in municipal bonds as a measure to broaden access of non resident investors to debt instruments in the country.
- As per the RBI, foreign investment in municipal bonds should be within the limits set for FPI investment in State Development Loans (SDLs).
Max Life Insurance to Mark 6th of Every Month as Protection Day
- Max Life Insurance, one of industry’s foremost life insurance companies, announced that it will dedicate 6th day of every calendar month as ‘Protection Day’ towards driving awareness around the concept of financial protection.
- The decision came in line with the Company’s launch of Max Life India Protection Quotient survey conducted in collaboration with Kantar IMRB. It denoted that the extent to which the Indians feel protected from financial uncertainties is extremely low, and that level was as 35.
- The Company will also start an initiative called the “Super Customer Week“, in which the customers will be taught about the different facets of financial protection.

India re-elected as observer to inter-governmental forum Arctic Council
- India re-elected as Observer of the Arctic Council at the 11th Arctic Council ministerial meeting at Rovaniemi, Finland
- Arctic Council a high level intergovernmental organisation set up in 1996 to promotes cooperation, coordination and interaction among Arctic states on common issues, particularly on sustainable development and environmental protection.
- Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States are members of the Arctic Council.
- Besides India, 12 other nations including China, France, Germany, Japan, UK, Switzerland and Netherlands have observer status.
Government Organises ‘Chintan Baithak’ with RE Industry Stakeholders
- To provide a further boost to the renewable energy sector in the country, the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) held a meeting, termed as ‘Chintan Baithak’, with the industry stakeholders.
- The government’s motive behind organizing this meet, which was chaired by the MNRE Secretary Anand Kumar, was to address various issues with respect to the renewable energy sector in the country.
- This meeting was attended by a number of industry stakeholders including renewable energy developers, regulators, think-tanks, equipment manufacturers, financers, industry bodies and skill developers.

Chhattisgarh Deploys 1st Anti-Naxal Women Commando Unit
- The Chhattisgarh police for the first time has inducted women commandos in the District Reserve Guard, its frontline anti-Naxal force.
- Comprising 30 women led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Dineshwari Nand, have received extensive training in jungle combat.
- With the induction of the women commando contingent, the number of platoons of the DRG in Dantewada now stands at six
- Of the 30 recruits, 10 are surrendered women Naxals, while 10 others are assistant constables who were part of the erstwhile Salwa Judum (anti-Naxal militia) movement

Bajaj ED Rakesh Sharma elected as IMMA Vice-President
- Bajaj Auto Executive Director Rakesh Sharma has been elected as Vice-President of Geneva-based International Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (IMMA).
- Sharma, a representative of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), was elected during the annual general meeting of (IMMA) at Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
Visa Appoints Sujatha V Kumar as Head of Marketing for India And South Asia
- Visa, the global leader in digital payments technology announced the appointment of Sujatha V Kumar as Head of Marketing for India and South Asia.
- She will be driving overall marketing strategy and execution including consumer, retail and digital marketing initiatives for India and the emerging markets of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and the Maldives.
- Prior to this, Sujatha was with Google as Head – Brand & Reputation, Marketing, and Strategy.
India’s Jagjit Pavadia re-elected to International Narcotics Control Board
- India’s Jagjit Pavadia was re-elected to the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) for another term.
- Ms Pavadia has been a member of the INCB since 2015 and her current term is set to expire in 2020.
- Jagjit Pavadia has been re-elected for a five-year term beginning 2nd March, 2020.
- INCB consists of 13 members who are elected by the ECOSOC and who serve in their personal capacity.
- Established in 1968, the INCB is an independent and quasi-judicial monitoring body for the implementation of the UN’s international drug control conventions.
CURRENT AFFAIRS: AWARDS AND HONOURS
Two Indians, among 115 UN personnel, staff honoured for sacrifice in line of duty
- Police Officer Jitender Kumar serving in the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) and Shikha Garg, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) consultant attached with India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, along with 113 UN personnel and staff, lost their lives in the service of peace between January 2018 and March 2019.
- Both are among 115 UN peacekeepers and staff honoured by the global organisation for their sacrifice in the line of duty.

Standard Life sells 1.78% in HDFC Life Insurance
- Standard Life has successfully divested 1.78 per cent of its stake in HDFC Life Insurance to raise Rs 1,400 crore.
- The divestment was done through offer for sale (OFS) route and the issue managed to sail through successfully with both qualified institutional investors (QIBs) and retail investor quotas seeing full subscriptions.
- The Standard Life (Mauritius Holdings) proposed to sell up to 3,60,00,000 equity shares (1.78% stake) at a floor price of Rs 390 per equity share and DSP Merril Lynch will be the broker for the sale process on behalf of Standard Life (Mauritius Holdings).

Airtel to merge broadband satellite business with Hughes India unitÂ
- Bharti Airtel has decided to merge its broadband satellite, or VSAT, business with that of market leader Hughes Communications India, to create a stronger no. 1 in the space, in a bid to increase scale, improve operational efficiencies and target new customers in areas such as in-flight connectivity.
- After a merger, Hughes Communication will own 67% share of new entity and the remaining 33% will own by Bharti Airtel.
TAFE signs MoU with PCRA to aid efficient energy utilization in agriculture
- Home-grown tractor maker Tractors and Farm Equipment (TAFE) and Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at promoting conservation of resources across the country.
- Under the collaboration, it is planned to jointly conduct Agriculture Workshops and Melas by involving TAFE’s extensive dealership network in spreading awareness / sensitizing farmers on the advantages of better maintenance and upkeep of their tractors and implements, resulting in lesser fuel consumption and efficient utilization of resources, thereby helping farmers maximize their productivity and profitability

NR Madhava Menon, father of modern legal education, passes away
- Prof N.R. Madhava Menon, an educationist, scholar and the pioneering spirit behind modern legal education in India, passed away. He was 84 years old.
- Menon was honoured by the Padma Shri, fourth highest Indian civilian award, in 2003 for his outstanding contribution to public services
Renowned Bengali TV and film actor Mrinal Mukherjee has passed away
- Veteran film and TV actor Mrinal Mukherjee has passed away
- Mukherjee had worked for over five decades in the Bengali film industry and acted in films like ‘Dui Bon’, ‘Chhuti’, ‘Shriman Prithviraj’ and more recently ‘Byomkesh’ and ‘Chiriakhana’.
- He had also acted in several Bengali TV serials and was a known face in Bengali theatre as well.
