Typhoon Faxai hits Tokyo, Japan
- Typhoon Faxai has hit Tokyo, Japan. There were winds of up to 216 kilometres (134 miles) per hour. Authorities have issued non-compulsory evacuation warnings to more than 390,000 people.
- About 100 bullet trains connecting Tokyo with central and western Japanese cities were cancelled.
- The Rugby World Cup 2019 (9th Edition) is scheduled to be held in Japan from September 20 and the typhoon has affected the preparations.

‘Economic census to be held every three years’
- To assess the country’s economic performance, economists and statisticians had to depend on data which was dated. But now, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has taken upon itself to make available the latest data and come out with the economic census every three years.
- The data being collected in the economic census undergoes three levels of scrutiny, all of which is through the mobile application developed exclusively for the economic census.
- It is a periodic exercise conducted by the MoSPI to collect disaggregated information on various operational and structural aspects of all economic establishments in the country.
- It is meant to provide insights into geographical spread of economic activities, ownership pattern, persons engaged, and sources of finance of the establishments engaged in economic activities across the country.
Govt sets up 3-member committee to look into assets, liabilities of JK to be given to 2 UTs
- The Centre has constituted a three-member committee to look into distribution of assets and liabilities of Jammu and Kashmir between two successor Union territories, which will come into existence on October 31.
- While former defence secretary Sanjay Mitra will be the chairman of the committee, retired IAS officer Arun Goyal and retired Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) officer Giriraj Prasad Gupta will be its members.
- On August 5, the Centre announced the abrogation of the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and bifurcation of the state into the two UTs.
PM Modi announces target revised from 21 million hectares to 26 million hectares by 2030
- Prime Minister Narendera Modi has raised by 10% the amount of degraded land India has agreed to rehabilitate by 2030.
- India would raise its ambition of the total area that would be restored from its land degradation status, from 21 million hectares to 26 million hectares between now and 2030.
- He made the announcement at the 14th session of the Conference of Parties (COP) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
- India has the presidency of the COP for two years. Shri Prakash Javadekar is the President of this COP.
PM Modi launched National Animal Disease Control Programme(NADCP)
- PM Modi launched the National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) for eradicating the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis in the livestock from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh
- The programme aims at vaccinating over 500 Million Livestock including cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats and pigs against the disease.
- It will be implemented for a period of five years till 2024 at a cost of 12, 652 crore rupees.
- The objective of the programme is to control Foot and Mouth Disease and Brucellosis by 2025 and their eradication by 2030
PM Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s second Multi-Modal Terminal in Jharkhand
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the India’s second multi-modal terminal built at Sahibganj in Jharkhand
- This is the second of the three Multi Modal Terminals (MMTs) being constructed on river Ganga under Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP).
- Earlier, in November 2018, Modi had inaugurated the first Multi Modal Terminals (MMTs) at Varanasi.
- The Rs. 290 crore-multi-modal terminal at Sahibganj implemented by Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI)
- The Terminal will open up industries of Jharkhand and Bihar to the global market and provide Indo-Nepal cargo connectivity through waterways route

Gurugram Police ties up with Google for traffic updates
- The Gurugram traffic police have tied up with Google maps for dissemination of traffic related information in real time for public use
- Information such as planned road closures, diversions and traffic alerts will now be shared by the Gurugram traffic police through Google Maps
- The basic idea behind this arrangement is to prompt commuters to make intelligent choices in order to make their commuting experience hassle-free

GeM and Punjab Government sign MoU for Setting up Project Management Unit
- Government e Marketplace (GeM) and Government of Punjab, signed MoU to set up a GeM Organizational Transformation Team (GOTT) Project Management Unit (PMU) in the state.
- GOTT will assist the Buyer Departments and agencies to transform their business activities, competencies & models to fully leverage the opportunities of an open market based procurement.

NITI Aayog joins hands with McKinsey for first digital capability centre
- McKinsey & Company has secured a contract from the NITI Aayog to set up India’s first digital capability centre (DCC) at New Delhi.
- The government will act as a facilitator to bring together industry, academia and research on one platform to help set up the centre, which has to be driven by the private sector.
- The Aayog has lined up extensive stakeholder consultations over the next few months to firm up the plan.
- DCC is a unique digital manufacturing learning centre offering company leaders and their workforces hands-on experience and workshops in next generation technology to help them advance their operations, design and productivity and can be used at all levels of the value chain.

National Conference on Crop Residue Management
- National Conference on Crop Residue Management was held for the farmers from the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh & Delhi.
- The conference was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in collaboration with Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in order to address concerns of farmers and State Governments.
- The straw burning incidents in 2018 have reduced by 15% and 41% as compared to that in 2017 and 2016 respectively.
- The conference has proposed to intensify In-Situ Management of Crop Residue to stop the straw burning.
- The multilingual Mobile App “Custom Hiring Centre (CHC) Farm Machinery” has also been launched for the farmers.
- Custom Hiring Centre (CHC) Farm Machinery Mobile App: It will connect the farmers with Custom Hiring Service Centres in their area.
India Participates in Thessaloniki International Fair in Greece
- An Indian delegation led by Minister of State (MoS) for Commerce and Industry, Hardeep Singh Puri participated in the 84th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) in Greece recently.
- The Minister of State for Commerce and Industry held a press interaction during the trade fair and highlighted the prospects for the development of Indian business in Greece and the wider region of Southeast Europe to strengthen bilateral trade relations between the two countries.
- Hardeep Singh Puri said that India’s economy is expected to reach USD 5 trillion in 2025 and it will be among the largest in the world.
- Exhibitors from Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Agricultural Produce Export Development Authority (APEDA), companies from the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector and tiles and ceramics industry and handicrafts from Rajasthan, Moradabad and Jammu & Kashmir had also participated in the fair.

- A three-day long International conference ANGAN (Augmenting Nature by Green Affordable New-habitat) for Energy Efficiency in Building Sector is organized in New Delhi
- The Conference is being organised by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, Government of India in collaboration with GIZ under the Indo German Technical Cooperation

Jack Ma steps down as chairman of Alibaba
- Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant, is stepping down as chairman.
- Daniel Zhang will officially take over the reins of Alibaba and serve as the chairman of the group.
- Ma first resigned as Alibaba’s chief executive officer in 2013 and was replaced by Jonathan Lu. In 2015, Daniel Zhang replaced Jonathan Lu.

8th edition of Ladakh Marathon concludes
- The 8th edition of Ladakh Marathon concluded in Leh. It witnessed 5500 participants from 26 countries.
- The 8th edition of Ladakh Marathon was divided in two days event with world highest Marathon Khardongla Challenge (72Km) held on September 06, followed by events held in three categories of Full Marathon (42Km), Half Marathon (21Km) and Run of fun (7KM). It is the highest marathon in the world as it is held at over 11, 000 feet above the mean sea level.
Diego Matos: Brazilian tennis player banned for life for match fixing
- Brazilian tennis player Diego Matos has been banned from professional tennis for life and fined $125,000 (£100,600) after being convicted of multiple match-fixing offences.
- Matos has also been ordered to repay $12,000 (£9,650) received in winnings in tournaments played in Ecuador.
- An independent anti-corruption hearing found that 31-year-old Matos had contrived the outcome of 10 tennis matches played during 2018 at ITF level tournaments in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Ecuador, Portugal and Spain.

Tamil film director and actor Rajasekar passes away
- Tamil film actor, cinematographer and director Rajasekar died of a cardiac arrest. He was 61.
- Rajasekar had worked in several films and later in television serials.
