World Contraception Day is observed on 26 September annually.It is a global campaign to improve the awareness about the contraceptive methods available and enable the young people to make informed decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health.

World Maritime Day is observed annually on 26 September to raise awareness about the importance of gender equality which is also necessary to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and also to highlight the contribution of women in the maritime sector. The theme of 2019 is “Empowering women in the maritime community”.

The Central government amended pension rules to extend benefits to the family of a government servant at an enhanced rate of 50 per cent of last pay drawn, for a period of 10 years even if he dies within seven years of joining service.

The Central government amended Rule 54 of the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 1972.

As per the amended Rule 54, the family of a government servant, who dies within seven years of joining service, will also be eligible for family pension at an enhanced rate of 50 per cent of last pay drawn, for a period of 10 years.

On the death of a government servant while in service, the family is entitled to a family pension in accordance with Rule 54 of the pension rules.

In case the government servant had rendered service of fewer than seven years before his death, the rate of family pension was 30 per cent from the beginning and family pension at an enhanced rate of 50 per cent of last pay drawn was not payable to the family.

The amendments would be effective from October 1, 2019. However, the families of government servants who died before the completion of service of seven years within 10 years before October 1, 2019, will also be eligible for family pension at enhanced rates with effect from October 1, 2019.

The Assam Government has launched a housing loan subsidy scheme to provide financial assistance on purchase or construction of the first house for a family.Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the scheme – Aponar Apon Ghar in Guwahati.

The subsidy up to 2 lakh 50 thousand rupees will be provided for loan amounts from five lakh to 40 lakh rupees.  This initiative would provide impetus to the economy and led to the expansion of real estate in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met leaders of the Pacific Islands Developing States (PSIDS) on the sidelines of the UNGA session in New York.
