United Nations WFP launches ‘Feed Our Future’ cinema ad campaign

  • The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have launched a cinema advertisement campaign ‘Feed Our Future’ to raise awareness and take steps against hunger and malnutrition in India.
  • The campaign launch event included a panel discussion hosted by TV host Mini Mathur, which had actor-director Nandita Das and filmmakers NeerajGhaywan and AnubhavSinha sharing their perspectives over cinema and social change.

UNICEF Launches Cryptocurrency Fund, Will Accept Donations ThroughBitcoin and Ether

  • The Children’s agency of the United Nations, known as UNICEF, has now become the first UN organization to hold and make transactions in cryptocurrency.
  • The UN Children’s agency has established UNICEF Cryptocurrency Fund, making UNICEF able to receive, hold and disburse donations via cryptocurrencies.
  • UNICEF joins a number of aid agencies that accept donations in cryptocurrencies, including the American Red Cross and the UN World Food Programme.
  • The Ethereum Foundation will make its initial donation through the French National Committee for UNICEF.

  • Sri Lanka has been removed from the “Grey List” of the international terror financing watchdog FATF.

SBI launches contactless mobile payment facility for credit card holders

  • The SBI Card launched ‘SBI Card Pay’, a payment feature based on Host Card Emulation (HCE) technology for faster, convenient and more secure card payments using mobile phones.

Government rolls out 6th tranche of gold bonds, fixes issue price at Rs 3835/gram

  • The government rolled out the sixth tranche of sovereign gold bonds.
  • The government has fixed the issue price at Rs 3,835 per gram with settlement date as October 30.
  • Further, the government has decided to offer a discount of Rs 50 per gram for investors applying online and making payment for the purchase of the bond through digital mode.
  • For such investors, the issue price of gold bond will be Rs 3,785 per gram of gold.

PayPal to launch Venmo credit card in partnership with Synchrony

  • PayPal Holdings Inc. plans to roll out a Venmo credit card next year as the online-payments giant looks for new ways to monetize the popular peer-to-peer money-transfer platform.
  • Venmo cardholders will be able to deal with all aspects of their cards from within the Venmo app, providing a “native in-app experience” for users who are used to checking that app on a routine basis.

Rajnath Singh inaugurates strategic bridge in eastern Ladakh

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated ‘Col ChewangRinchenSetu’, a strategically important bridge, over Shyokriver in Ladakh region.
  • The 430-meter-long bridge has been built by Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and connects Durbuk and Daulat Beg Oldie in Eastern Ladakh.
  • This bridge has been completed in record time. It will not only provide all-weather connectivity in the region but also be a strategic asset in the border areas.
  • Sandwiched between strategic Karakoram and Chang Chenmo ranges, the bridge is 430-metre long at an altitude of about 15,000 feet and has been constructed using micro piling technology. The construction has been completed in record 15 months.

DAC approves procurement of indigenous equipment worth over Rs 3,300 crore for armed forces

  • The Defence Ministry accorded approval for procurement of indigenously designed and developed military equipment including anti-tank guided missiles worth over Rs 3300 crores for the armed forces
  • The decision was taken at a meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh
  • The first two projects include procurement of third generation anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) and the auxiliary power units (APUs) for the T-72 and the T-90 battle tanks.
  • The third indigenous project pertains to discrete Electronic Warfare (EW) systems for mountain and High Altitude terrain, which would be designed and developed by DRDO and manufactured by design cum production partner from the Indian industry.

Bishworjit Singh Saikhom of Indian Army wins IRONMAN 70.3

  • Indian Army’s Bishworjit Singh Saikhom scripted history after finishing on the first spot in the country’s first-ever IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon.
  • Saikhom, a Pune based Havildar working with the Bombay Sappers, completed the IRONMAN 70.3 in 4 hours 42 minutes 44 seconds.
  • The second position was secured by NihalBaig, alumni of IIT Bombay, who clocked 4 hours 47 minutes 47 seconds. Mahesh Lourembam completed the triathlon in 4 hours 52 minutes, finishing third.

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov wins first career ATP title at Stockholm Open

  • Canada’s Denis Shapovalov won the Stockholm Open
  • He defeat Serbian FilipKrajinovic with a 6-4, 6-4 in the final
  • Not only was it Shapovalov’s first ATP title but he becomes the first Canadian Tour winner since Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., in Brisbane in January 2016

Dhyanchand award recipient wrestler DaduChougule passed away

  • Wrestling legend DaduChougule has passed away
  • He won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand in 1974. He was a recipient of the prestigious Dhyan Chand Award for lifetime
  • In 1973, Chougule had won the titles ‘Rustum-e-Hind’ and ‘Mahan Bharat Kesari’ in national-level tournaments.
  • He won the ‘Maharashtra Kesari’ title twice in 1970 and 1971 and was awarded by the state government with ‘ShivchattrapatiPuraskar’.

Bengali daily ‘Bartaman’ editor SubhaDutta passed away

  • SubhaDutta, the editor of leading Bengali daily ‘Bartamaan, has passed away
  • She began her association with Bartamaan under the tutelage of its founder-editor BarunSengupta, her elder brother.
  • She was then also the editor of the company’s monthly Bengali magazine, ‘SukhiGrihakon’.
  • Dutta took over as the daily’s editor after Sengupta’s death on June 19, 2008.
