Interesting facts about Chief Ministers:

  • Sucheta Kriplani of the Indian National Congress was the first woman Chief Minister in the history of Independent India between 1967-1967
  • Mayawati was the first Dalit Chief minister (Bahujan Samaj Party) and she had a record of longest serving chief minister of UP for a total of 2554 days.
  • West Bengal CM Jyoti Basu is the longest-serving chief minister of any state in India (1977-2000) for a total of 8539 days. ‘Operation Barga’ a historic land reform movement was carried out throughout West Bengal during under his regime and this movement soon replicated in other parts of the country.
  • Andhra Pradesh CM Nadendla Bhaskara Rao has served the shortest period of only 31 days in 1984.
  • Arvind Kejriwal of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) served as a CM of Delhi only for 49 days, after which he resigned over the non-passage of anti-graft legislation, the Jan Lokpal Bill.
  • Sheila Dikshit CM of Delhi was the only women chief minister to lead her government for three consecutive terms in India ( 1998-2013).
  • Narendra Modi, the former chief minister of Gujarat and the current Prime Minister of India have been blamed for not taking action against communal riots in the country. He was given a clean chit by SIT in 2007.
  • Tamil Nadu chief minister CN Annadurai was the first chief minister to die in office.
  • J Jayalalitha, the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu was an actress in the Cinema Industry, before joining politics.
  • Mamata Banerjee, the present CM of West Bengal is the only leader who could oust the 34 Years of Left Front rule in the state.
  • Syeda Anwar Taimur was the Muslim women to become the Chief Minister of any state in India. Chief Minister of Assam (1980- June 1981)

Facilities Availed by Chief Ministers:

Below are the list of facilities given to the Chief Ministers. The amount allotted for each facility varies from state to state, it is specifically mentioned in the State Legislatures of the country.

Medical Facilities:

With respect to the Medical Attendance rules, the Chief minister can get free treatment, accommodation and reimbursement at government hospitals and other hospitals referred by the government.

Residence Facilities:

The chief minister will get a well furnished and rent free accommodation. If the Chief minister wants to live in his/her own house, the value of house rental is paid to the chief minister.

Reimbursement of Electricity and Phone Charges:

A fixed amount of money is reimbursed against phone call charges made in a month and fixed amounts of electricity units are provided free of cost on the monthly basis to the chief minister.

Travelling Facilities:

Within the Jurisdiction, the fixed amount of money is given for the Chief Minister for his/her travel expenses in a year. Chief Minister’s family also can avail certain amount for free travelling in a year. The amount varies according to the article 164 of the Indian constitution.

The Chief Minister will also get a certain amount of pension after his/her retirement, according to the Constitution of India. The amount varies in the respective state legislatures. If incase of death, the chief minister spouse will get the pension amount.
