World Science Day for Peace and Development Observed on 10 November                                       

  • World Science Day for Peace and Development is marked and observed every year on November 10.

Purpose :

  • To highlight the important role that science plays in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues.

Aim of the day :

  • To ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science.
  • The Theme of 2021 is : “Building Climate-Ready Communities”.
  • World Science Day was proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2001.
  • The first World Science Day for Peace and Development was celebrated worldwide on November 10, 2002.

Significance of the day :

  • To strengthen awareness about the role of science for peaceful and sustainable societies.
  • To promote national and international solidarity for shared science between countries.
  • To draw attention to the challenges faced by science in raising support for the scientific endeavor.
  • To make new national and international commitments to the use of science that will benefit societies.
  • The day also provides an opportunity to show the general public the importance of science in their lives and to engage them in various discussions.

  • The event was the positive outcome of the 1999 World Conference on Science in Budapest.

National Education Day Observed 11 November

  • The National Education Day is being celebrated on November 11 to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s first Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
  • The day was announced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development ( Currently Ministry of Education ) on 11 September 2008.
  • MHRD also gives the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad National Fellowship in the form of financial assistance to students from minority communities to pursue M Phil and PhD.

About Maulana Abul Kalam Azad :

  • Maulana Abul Kalam Azad born on 11 November 1888 in Mecca Hejaz, Ottoman Empire (Presently Saudi Arabia).
  • He is commonly remembered as Maulana Azad.
  • He was an Indian independence activist, Islamic theologian, writer and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress.
  • He started a weekly journal in Urdu in 1912 called Al-Hilal to criticise the British policies.
  • He was the first education minister of independent India and served from 15 August 1947 to 2 February 1958.
  • The first IIT, IISc, School of Planning and Architecture and the University Grants Commission were established under his tenure as the education minister.
  • The prominent cultural, literary academies were also set up  including the Sangeet Natak Academy, Lalit Kala Academy, Sahitya Academy as well as the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
  • He breathed his last in 1958.

Awards & Honours :

  • For his contribution as an educationalist & freedom fighter In 1992 the government of India honoured by giving posthumously Bharat Ratna.

Cabinet adopts November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the declaration of November 15, the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas.

Aim of the day :

  • In order to honour brave tribal freedom fighters and make the youth aware of their sacrifices.
  • The day will be celebrated every year from now on to recognize the efforts of the tribals for preservation of cultural heritage and promotion of Indian values of valour, hospitality and national pride.
  • Also, the Government of India has planned week long celebrations starting from 15th November to 22nd November 2021 to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of glorious history of tribal people, culture and achievements.

About Birsa Munda :

  • Birsa Munda was born on 15 November 1875 Ulihatu, Lohardaga district, Bengal Presidency (now in Khunti district of Jharkhand).
  • He was an Indian tribal freedom fighter, religious leader, and folk hero who belonged to the Munda
  • He is revered as Bhagwan by tribal communities across the country.
  • He participated in anti-missionary and anti-establishment activities between 188 –1890 in Chaibasa.
  • He started a movement called ‘Ulgulan’, or ‘The Great Tumult.
  • He also coined the slogan,‘Abua raj seter jana, maharani raj tundu jana’ which means ‘End the kingdom of the queen, create our kingdom’.
  • Birsa Munda died in jail on 9 June 1900.

United States Of America becomes 101st member country of International Solar Alliance

  • On Nov 10, 2021, The United States of America became the 101st member country to join the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
  • The framework agreement was formally signed by John Kerry, the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.

Morinari Watanabe re-elected as President of International Gymnastics Federation

  • Morinari Watanabe from Japan has been re-elected as the president of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) for a period of three years.
  • Watanabe, from Japan, won the vote 81 to 47 against Farid Gayibov of Azerbaijan at a conference in Turkey.
  • Previously,  Watanabe was elected as the president of FIG in 2016 for a four-year term beginning January 2017.
  • His new term is three years, so the next elections coincide with the 2024 Paris Olympics.

About Morinari Watanabe :

  • Watanabe  served as general-secretary of the Japan Gymnastics Association (2009–16).
  • He is the ninth president of the FIG and its first Asian president.
  • In October 2018, the International Olympic Committee elected him as a new member.

Indian Navy received fourth Scorpene submarine ‘Vela’

  • On Nov 09, 2021, The fourth submarine of the Project – 75, Yard 11878 was delivered to the Indian Navy.
  • The vessel has been named INS Vela.
  • Vela’, the submarine was launched on 06 May 19, and has completed all major harbour and sea trials including weapon and sensor trials.
  • Project – 75 includes construction of six submarines of Scorpene design.
  • These submarines are being constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai, under collaboration with M/s Naval Group, France.
  • After almost 25 years two SSK submarines built by MDL in 1992 and 1994 are still being operated by the Indian Navy.
  • So far the shipyard has delivered three submarines of “Scorpene’’ class namely: Kalvari, Khanderi, and
  • The fifth submarine Vagir, which was launched November 2020.
  • The sixth submarine under Project 75 is in the advanced stage of outfitting.
  • The Acceptance Document for submarine was signed by RAdm KP Aravindan, Chief Staff Officer (Tech), Western Naval Command and VAdm Narayan Prasad, AVSM, NM, IN (Retd), Chairman & Managing Director MDL signed in presence of top Navy and MDL officials.
  • This category of submarines is considered superior as they include several aspects of naval combat performing anti-ship, anti-submarine, intelligence, mine laying, and area surveillance operations.
  • The Indian Navy currently has 12 submarines & in addition, there are two nuclear submarines INS Arihant and INS Chakra in the navy’s fleet.
  • Already in 2020, the Defence Ministry cleared a long-pending proposal for the manufacturing of 6 submarines worth nearly Rs. 50,000 under the P75I project.

Japan successfully launches Epsilon-5 rocket with 9 satellites

  • The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, successfully launched its fifth Epsilon solid-fuel rocket carrying nine small satellites.

Purpose :

  • To promote the participation of educational institutions and companies in space development.
  • The Epsilon-5 rocket took off from Uchinoura Space Center in the southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima.

About the rocket :

  • The Rocket is 2.6 meters in diameter and 26 meters in length, weighing 96 tons, the rocket carried nine satellites.
  • This was the second satellite launch under the program.
  • In the first such launch, seven satellites were released from the Epsilon-4 rocket in January 2019.

India launches e-Amrit portal on EVs at COP26

  • On Nov 10, 2021, The Central government launched ‘E-Amrit‘, a web portal on electric vehicles (EVs), at the ongoing COP26 Summit in the United Kingdom’s Glasgow.
  • The portal has been developed and hosted by NITI Aayog under a collaborative knowledge exchange programme with the UK government.

  • The launch was attended by UK High-Level Climate Action Champion Nigel Topping and NITI Aayog Adviser Sudhendu Jyoti Sinha.

About E-Amrit :

  • E-Amrit is a one-stop destination for all information on electric vehicles.
  • It will provide details related to burst myths around the adoption of EVs, as well as their purchase, investment opportunities, policies, subsidies.
  • It intends to complement initiatives of the government on raising awareness on EVs and sensitizing consumers on the benefits of switching to electric vehicles.
  • India has taken many initiatives to accelerate the decarbonisation of transport and the adoption of electric mobility in the country.
  • Schemes such as FAME and PLI are especially important in creating an ecosystem for the early adoption of EVs.

FAME :

  • The Ministry of Heavy Industries formulated aScheme namely Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) Scheme in 2015 to promote adoption of electric/ hybrid vehicles (xEVs) in India.

About LEADS Index :

  • The Logistics Ease Across Different States (LEADS) Index was launched in 2018 by the Commerce and Industry Ministry and Deloitte.
  • The index ranks states in terms of the logistical support they provided to promote goods trade.
  • 2021 LEADS Index is the third edition of the government’s ranking of states based on logistics infrastructure. ( 1st – 2018, 2nd – 2019, no ranking in 2020 due to covid ).

Purpose :

  • To rank States and UTs on mobility of goods and the efficiency of their logistics ecosystem.
  • The LEADS 2021 assessed the domestic and EXIM logistics ecosystem of each state.
  • The 2021 survey was conducted between May and August 2021 and the report is based on 21 indicators.
  • For representation purposes, states have been ranked in three separate classes including ‘North Eastern States & Himalayan UTs’ and ‘Other UTs’ group.
  • The ranking is based on parameters such as the competitiveness of pricing, timeliness and availability of infrastructure and that of services, among others.

Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2022 : India Ranks 10th Position

  • India has been placed at 10th spot with a score of 22 in the global Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2022.
  • The report, published by Germanwatch on the side-lines of the COP26.
  • In 2020 also India was at 10th position.

Top 10 in CCPI 2022 :

  • The top three places in the overall ranking is once again empty as none of the countries performed well enough  to achieve an overall very high rating in CCPI.
  • Meanwhile, Denmark occupied the fourth place with a score of92 as the highest ranked country in CCPI 2022, followed by Sweden (5th- 74.46), and Norway (6th- 73.62), United Kingdom (7th), Morocco (8th) and Chile (9th).
  • China slipped down four places compared to 2020 to occupy 37th position and a ‘low’ rating.
  • In the overall ranking, Australia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Saudi Arabia and South Korea are among the worst performers.
  • India maintained a performance ‘high’ in the GHG emissions, energy use and climate policy categories, and medium in renewable energy.
  • India “is already on track to meet its 2030 emissions target close to achieving its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target of a 40% share for non-fossil fuel installed power capacity by 2030, and on course for a targeted 33–35% reduction in energy intensity by the same year.
  • India’s ambitious renewable energy policies, such as its targets of renewable electricity capacity of 450 GW and a 30% electric vehicle share by 2030.

About CCPI :

  • The CCPI has been developed jointly by not-for-profit organisations Germanwatch (Bonn, Germany), NewClimate Institute (Germany) and the Climate Action Network (CAN International) since 2005.
  • The CCPI evaluates 60 countries and the European Union, which together generate more than 90 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The countries are ranked by accessing their performance in four categories, with 14 indicators: Greenhouse gas emissions (40 percent of the overall score), renewable energy (20 percent), energy use (20 percent) and climate policy (20 percent).

  • The Bangla version of the book ‘Operation X’ about the naval commando operation jointly launched by the Indian Navy and the Mukti Bahini of Bangladesh was launched in Dhaka.
  • The book is written by Capt MNR Samant and Sandeep Unnithan & it was co-written by noted author and journalist Sandeep Unnithan in a readable, excitingly paced language.

About the Book :

  • The book has been compiled from personal notes of Capt MNR Samant and first hand accounts of Indian Naval Personnel and Muktijoddhas who participated in the operations.
  • Operation X’ was conceptualized by the then Chief of the Indian Navy, Admiral SM Nanda and Captain Mihir K Roy.
  • Operation X was part of ‘operation Jackpot’ under which covert training and equipping of the Bangladeshi liberation army ‘Mukti Bahini’ was done.
  • This was the largest covert operation undertaken anywhere in the world after World War II.

Eminent academic Ramakrishna Rao Passes away

  • On Nov 09, 2021, Eminent academician and psychologist Koneru Ramakrishna Rao Passed away.
  • He was 89-years-old.

About Ramakrishna Rao :

  • Ramakrishna Rao was Born on 4 October 1932.
  • Ramakrishna Rao had served as an advisor to higher education and as the chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education.
  • He was Vice-Chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Planning Board.
  • He was internationally recognized for his works as a psychologist and also served as the President of the US-based Parapsychology Association and Indian Academy of Applied Psychology.
  • He wrote more than 20 books and 300 research publications.

Awards & Honours :

  • The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of Padma Shri (Literature and Education category) in 2011.
  • He was bestowed with many honours, including honorary doctoral degrees from Nagarjuna, Kakatiya and Andhra universities and Padma Shri from the Government of India.

  • Centre has amended the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules 2011 for enhanced protection of Consumer Rights.
  • Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has launched the 3rd edition of the Logistics Ease Across Different States (LEADS) report, 2021. 
  • The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), under the Ministry of Communications, has formed a technology innovation group on the Sixth Generation (6G), to take lead in the development of 6G Technology globally.
  • The annual ‘Ganga Utsav 2021-The River Festival’ was organized virtually on November 1-3 by National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) to mark the anniversary of the announcement of River Ganga as the ‘National River’ i.e., November 4th.
  • Beating the Heat: Sustainable Urban Cooling Handbook report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) indicates that cities will be the hotspots, if global warming continues.
  • The Government of the United Kingdom (UK) unveiled a £5 coin to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of Diwali.
  • During the ongoing 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, aka COP26 (Conference of Parties) in Glasgow, Scotland, a report titled ‘The Adaptation Gap Report 2021: The Gathering Storm’ by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was released.
  • UNESCO has included Srinagar city of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir in its coveted list of Creative Cities Network (UCCN).
  • Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu will inaugurate the 24th edition of Bengaluru Tech Summit 2021 being organised by the Department of Electronics, IT & BT of the Government of Karnataka jointly with Software Technology Parks of India, from November 17-19.
  • Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office and MoS for Earth Sciences, Science & Technology as well as Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Dr Jitendra Singh has inaugurated DBT – APSCS&T Centre of Excellence for Bioresources and Sustainable Development and Rural Technology Demonstration Centre at Kimin in Papum Pare District of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Army has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Kashmir enabling the soldiers posted in J&K to seek admission in various courses.
  • Reserve Bank of India has announced its first global hackathon ‘HARBINGER 2021Innovation for Transformation’ with the theme ‘smarter digital payments’. Registration for the hackathon starts from November 15.
  • The RBI has imposed several restrictions on Maharashtra-based Babaji Date Mahila Sahakari Bank, including capping withdrawals at 5,000 rupees for customers, amid deterioration in the lender’s financial position.
