International Missing Children’s Day: May 25

  • International Missing Children’s Day is an annual awareness event held on May 25th.
  • The day’s goals are to bring attention to the issue of child abduction, educate parents on how to protect their children, and honour those who have never been found as well as those who have.
  • This awareness event is co-sponsored by the Global Missing Children’s Network.
  • The network, founded in 1998, has 23 member countries that collaborate to share information and best practices to improve the effectiveness and success rate of missing children’s investigations.

HISTORY:

  • Missing Children’s Day was first observed in the United States in 1983.
  • The date was chosen in response to the abduction of 6-year-old Etan Patz from New York City on May 25, 1979.
  • International Missing Children’s Day, which falls on the same date, was established a few years later in 2001 and is now recognized worldwide.

Centre launches Swachh Survekshan 2023:

  • Under Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0, the Union Government of India has launched the Eighth Edition of Swachh Survekshan – SS-2023.
  • Shri Manoj Joshi, Secretary, of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, unveiled it at a virtual event in New Delhi.
  • Swachh Survekshan- 2023 is curated to achieve circularity in waste management, with the idea of ‘Waste to Wealth’ as its driving philosophy.
  • The survey would prioritize the three R’s: Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse.
  • As a result, in SS-2023, the evaluation will take four phases rather than the three in previous editions.

Param Porul supercomputer inaugurated at NIT Tiruchirappalli:

  • A supercomputer named Param Porul was inaugurated at NIT Tiruchirappalli under National Supercomputing Mission (NSM).
  • The NSM is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
  • To support computational research, the Param Porul supercomputing facility was established under phase two of the national supercomputing initiative.

  • The Param Porul uses direct contact liquid cooling technology to achieve high power utilization effectiveness while lowering operational costs.
  • For the advantage of researchers, multiple applications from diverse scientific areas such as Weather and Climate, Bioinformatics, Computational Chemistry, Molecular Dynamics, Material Sciences, Computational Fluid Dynamics, and so on have been installed on the system.

Kolkata becomes 1st metro city to get its biodiversity register

  • Kolkata mayor, Firhad Hakim announced Kolkata has become the first major metropolitan city in India to make a detailed biodiversity register.
  • On the occasion of UN International Biodiversity Day (22 May), Kolkata Municipal Corporation released the People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR).
  • The document is prepared by the biodiversity management committee (BMC) of the civic body under the supervision of the state biodiversity board and with help from NGOs.

  • Chandigarh and Indore are other important cities that have prepared the document.

About  People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) :

  • The People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR), details flora and fauna forms within the city, as well as its land, uses, and human activities.
  • It is the 520-page documentation of 399 plants (i.e. 138 trees, 126 Chinese vegetables, 33 medicinal plants, and Nearly 100 other plants) and 283 animal species (i.e. Nearly 70 butterflies, 47 fish, 84 birds, 22 mammals).
  • The report covers hotspots such as the East Kolkata Wetlands and Rabindra Sarobar.
  • It is also a key document in the fight against climate change.
  • The Data is generated through on-ground surveys, focused group discussions, and interviews, also used Google-based maps to document water bodies, green verges, and other landscapes.

SEBI reviews the framework for debt ETFs and index funds

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has announced a new framework for managing Passive Funds, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), and Index Funds amid the growing popularity of such funds as investment products for retail investors.
  • The parameters of debt ETFs or Index Funds could be based on indices comprising corporate debt securities or Government Securities (G-Secs), T-bills, and/or State Development Loans (SDLs) or a combination of corporate debt securities and G-secs, T-bills, and SDLs.
  • The new framework will come into effect from July 1, 2022.

Key Highlights :

Weightage of the Securities :

  • For an index weighing at least 80% of corporate debt securities, a sole issuer should not have a weighting of more than 15% in the index in respect of AAA securities, not more than 12.5% in case of AA securities, and not more than 10% in case of A and below rated securities.
  • In the case of a Hybrid Index consisting of both corporate debt securities and G-Secs/SDLs with a weighting of up to 80% of corporate debt securities, a single issuer should not have more than 15% weight in the index in respect of AAA-rated securities.
  • Regarding the norms of the Market Making (MMs) framework for ETFs, the Asset Management Companies (AMCs) need to appoint at least two market makers (MMs), who are members of the stock exchanges, for ETFs to provide continuous liquidity on the exchange platform.
  • Investors can directly approach the AMC for the redemption of units of the ETFs, for transactions up to Rs 25 crore without any exit load in case of certain scenarios.
  • The minimum subscription amount at the time of the new fund offer (NFO) for debt ETFs/Index Funds and other ETFs/Index Funds would be Rs 10 crore and Rs 5 crore,
  • SEBI has also allowed mutual funds to launch passively managed Equity-Linked Savings Schemes (ELSS) to save tax under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961.

Captain Abhilasha Barak becomes Indian Army’s 1st woman combat pilot

  • Captain Abhilasha Barak (26 years old) has become the first woman officer to join the Army Aviation Corps as a helicopter pilot after completing a year-long course at the Combat Army Aviation Training School at Nashik in
  • Barak has been assigned to the second flight of the 2072 Army Aviation Squadron that operates the Dhruv advanced light helicopter (ALH).
  • It was described as a ‘Golden Letter Day’ for the Indian Army.

About Captain Abhilasha Barak :

  • Barak hails from Haryana and is the daughter of a retired colonel.
  • She is an alumnus of the Lawrence School, Sanawar.
  • Before joining the Army, she worked as a Business Technology Analyst for Deloitte, US.

  • India’s Union Health Secretary Shri Rajesh Bhushan has been appointed as the Chairperson of Committee B at the 75th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • The World Health Assembly functions through two types of committees: Committee A and Committee B

GIC buys a 7.5% stake in Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail for Rs 2,195 crore

  • Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, GIC, is acquiring a 7.5% equity stake in Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail (ABFRL) for Rs 2,195 crore by way of preferential issue of equity and warrants.
  • GIC will invest Rs 770 crore now towards subscription of equity and warrants and follow it up by pumping in Rs 1,425 crore in one or more tranches within 18 months.
  • After the investment, Aditya Birla Group will hold a controlling stake of 51.9% in the company.
  • The capital infusion will strengthen ABFRL’s balance sheet.
  • Analysts expect debt levels to stay within manageable limits in the current fiscal year 2022-23.

  • According to the report titled Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2021: Rebuilding for a Sustainable and Resilient Future’, released by the World Economic Forum (WEF), India has been ranked the 54th place in the overall rankings with a score of 4.2, down from 46th in 2019, but has remained on top within South Asia.
  • The theme of the WEF’s Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2021 is “Rebuilding for a Sustainable and Resilient Future”.

Ministry of Education releases National Achievement Survey 2021

  • The Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education released the National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2021 report.
  • The report assesses the health of the school education system in the country by conducting a comprehensive evaluation survey of children’s learning competencies in classes III(3), V(5), VIII(8) and X(10) with a cycle period of 3 years.
  • It reflects the overall assessment of the school education system.
  • The survey was managed through a technology platform designed and developed by the National Informatics Center (NIC).

Objective :

  • The last NAS was held in 2017.

About NAS 2021 :

  • NAS 2021 conducted on November 12, 2021, assessed over 34 lakh students in 18 lakh schools at 720 districts across 36 states and Union Territories.
  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) along with the governments of states and union territories of India will be administering the test.
  • The survey was conducted in 22 languages, ie Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Bodo, Garo, Khasi, Konkani, Nepali, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Mizo, Bhutia, and Lepcha.
  • The report is based on the performance in all subjects through disaggregation by gender (female, male), Area (Rural and Urban), Management of schools (Government, Government Aided, and Private unaided), and Social Groups (Schedule Caste (SC), Schedule Tribe (ST), Other Backward Communities (OBC) and General.
  • For Classes 3 and 5, the survey will be conducted in mathematics, language, and environmental science.
  • For Class 8, NAS will be conducted in mathematics, language, science, and social science subjects.

President Ram Nath Kovind to inaugurate first-ever two-day national conference of woman legislators in Thiruvananthapuram 

  • President Ram Nath Kovind will kick off the two-day National Women Legislators’ Conference-2022 at the Legislative Assembly complex, which is expected to bring a significant number of female parliamentarians and legislators from throughout the country.
  • The first-ever such event, organized by the state Assembly, is part of the nationwide celebrations marking India’s 75th anniversary of independence, known as the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

KEYPOINTS:

  • The two-day meeting, according to Assembly sources, would focus on contemporary topics like women’s rights, gender equality, and enough female representation in decision-making bodies.
  • Gujarat Assembly Speaker Nimaben Acharya, Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi, former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, and former Rajya Sabha member Brinda Karat are among the speakers at the Constitution and Women’s Rights event.
  • The panellists for the session “Role of Women in India’s Freedom Struggle,” as well as former MP Subhashini Ali, will be MPs Supriya Sule and Jebi Methar, while the speakers for the session Women’s Rights and Legal Gaps will be West Bengal minister Shashi Panja, MP Jaya Bachchan, Delhi Assembly deputy speaker Rakhi Birla, and Kerala High Court justice Anu Sivaraman.

SC appoints 3-member Committee to oversee the functioning of AIFF:

  • The Supreme Court has established a three-member Committee of Administrators (CoA) chaired by former Supreme Court judge AR Dave to oversee the business of the All-India Football Federation (AIFF) and the approval of its constitution in accordance with the National Sports Code and model guidelines.

Additional Info.

  • According to a panel of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and PS Narasimha, the COA would include two previous members — SY Qureshi, former Chief Election Commissioner, and Bhaskar Ganguly, former captain of the Indian Football Team, in addition to Retired Justice Dave.
  • The AIFF’s existing condition of affairs, according to the Supreme Court, is not conducive to the federation’s constitutional government.
  • It directed the CoA to take immediate control of the AIFF and supervise the AIFF’s acceptance of the constitution.
