National Education Day:
National Education Day is celebrated in India on November 11 commemorating the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. The Indian scholar served as the first education minister of independent India from 1947 to 1958. Every year various competitions, workshops, and events are held in educational institutions highlighting the day’s importance. On September 11, 2008, The Ministry of Human Resource Development had announced the day will be celebrated as National Education Day.

Lakshadweep get new airport:
The Island Development Agency (IDA) decided to develop an airport at Minicoy Island in an effort to unlock the potential of tourism and the tuna fishing industry in Lakshadweep. The decision was taken at the second meeting of the IDA, chaired by Union home minister Rajnath Singh. The naval air station at Shibpur near Diglipur in the northern Andaman and Nicobar Islands would be “co-used as a joint-user airport”

Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata to get more airports:
Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata are set to get second airports soon to accommodate the growing passenger traffic. While the Centre’s plans for the New Delhi and Mumbai airports are on in full swing, the Civil Aviation Ministry has written to the Tamil Nadu and West Bengal governments to suggest plots where the alternate airports can be built.

Telangana government declares Urdu as second official language:
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao declared Urdu as the state’s second official language. Every office in the state will now have an Urdu speaking officer. The people in Tealangana demand to make Urdu a second language had been there for a long time.

Bike ambulances to be introduced in Delhi from January:
Starting January, bike ambulance facilities would be introduced on a pilot basis in three of Delhi’s 11 districts– East, North-east, and Shahdara. The facility of “First Responder Bike Ambulance” will be introduced, to tackle the congested roads during peak traffic hours, in three districts of Delhi from January next year.

Arunachal Pradesh government honours singer Bhupen Hazarika with a 10-foot statue:
The Arunachal Pradesh government has erected a statue of legendary music composer and singer Bhupen Hazarika at Bolung village in Dibang Valley district of the State. The ten-foot bronze statue, sculpted by Biren Singh of Guwahati, was erected in the village this year. It would be formally unveiled in the early part of 2018. “The State government had allocated Rs. 30 lakh for the statue in 2015 as a tribute to the legendary singer.

Mumbai is hosting grand India and World exhibition:
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalay along with the British Museum and the national Museum have put forward an array of sculptures and installations from across India to form nine narratives that describe the Indian and world history. These nine narratives are drawn from important eras in Indian history. Iconic objects have been selected from different museums which are put together for this. The exhibition is designed around a wide variety of objects from figurative representations and large scale sculpture to inscriptions and coins, paintings jewellery and tools.

Centre approves creation of National Testing Agency:
The Union Cabinet approved the creation of a National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct entrance examinations for higher educational institutions. Its creation will relieve the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) – which conducts exams like the National Eligibilty-cum-Entrance Test – and the All India Council for Technical Education of the burden of conducting entrance tests.
JEE Main, NEET likely to be conducted twice a year from 2019:
After the Centre cleared the proposal for formation of the National Testing Agency (NTA), entrance examinations like JEE Main and NEET are likely to be conducted twice a year from 2019. The move is aimed at relieving the Central Board of Secondary Education from its duties of conducting entrance examinations and instead focuses on improving the quality of higher education.

Qatar appoints women to Shura Council for first time:
For the first time in the country’s history, Qatar has appointed four women to the Shura Council, one of its most important consultative bodies. The women will be part of the 45-member council responsible for discussing draft laws, general government policy, and the state’s draft budget. The council members also have the right to question cabinet members on policy issues.

UNESCO appoints its second woman Director-General:
UNESCO member states appointed former French Culture Minister Audrey Azoulay as the new Director-General of the cultural agency. The 45-year-old Azoulay, who was nominated for the post last month, is the 11th Director-General of UNESCO and the second woman to occupy the position. She will take office on November 15.

Senior citizens of more than 70 years of age get doorstep banking by December 31:
Senior citizens of more than 70 years of age and the differently-abled can look forward to availing of basic banking services, right from the comfort of their home. The RBI today asked banks to provide doorstep banking facilities to senior citizens of more than 70 years of age and differently-abled persons by December this year. Banks have been directed that senior citizens and specially-abled persons, including the visually-impaired, should be provided basic services like pick-up and delivery of cash, cheque books and demand drafts at their residence
GST Council slashes tax rates on 177 items from 28% to 18%:
The GST Council has lowered tax rates on mass consumption products like deodorants, chocolates, chewing gums, aftershave, and beauty products to 18%. The GST Council has reduced the tax rate on a total of 177 items from 28% to 18%. The GST on granite, marble, and detergents has also been reduced to 18% from the earlier 28%.
HDFC Bank tweaks norms for premium accounts:
HDFC Bank has tweaked the requirement for its premium customers by mandating that they now keep Rs 1-lakh balance a month from the earlier requirement of Rs 1-lakh balance a quarter. Changing the eligibility for its ‘Classic’ banking programme, HDFC Bank now mandates that customers would have to maintain the new minimum balance from December 9, according to mailers sent to customers.

Dubai bank Emirates NBD begins operations in India:
Emirates NBD, the UAE’s second-largest lender has started operations in India with an aim to invest USD 100 million capital into its Indian operations. The Mumbai branch marks the bank’s fifth international branch outside of its UAE network. The branch will offer a range of services to corporate, SME and institutional clients including trade finance, treasury services, bilateral and syndicated loans in addition to supporting NRI (non-resident Indian) customers looking for cross-border wealth management solutions.

Cricketer Gautam Gambhir named government nominee in DDCA managing committee:
Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir was named a government nominee in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) managing committee. The 36-year-old Gambhir has played 58 Tests, 147 ODIs and 37 Twenty20 Internationals. He has been the top scorer in finals of two World Cups (2007 T20 and 2011 50-over) that India won.
Bharat Khandare set to become UFC’s first India-born fighter:
Earlier this year Arjan Singh Bhullar became the first Indian to sign up in the UFC. And now, Bharat Khandare is all set to be the first Indian-born Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter in the UFC. The 28-year old was first approached by UFC three years back but the deal did not go through because of his prior commitments. He will now have his debut fight against Pingyuan Liu, who has won 12 fights in the tournament, in the UFC Bantamweight division at the UFC Fight Night in Shanghai on November 25.

Former India cricketer AG Milkha Singh passed away:
Former India cricketer AG Milkha Singh passed away following a cardiac arrest at a hospital in Chennai, family sources said. He was 75 and was survived by wife, a son and daughter. Milkha Singh played four Test matches in the early 60s. His elder brother Kripal Singh, also played for the country, in 14 Tests. They played together in one Test against England in 1961-’62.
