Indian Rupee Second-Worst Performing Asian Currency in August 2024 Due to High Dollar Demand and Equity Outflows
- The Indian rupee was the second-worst-performing Asian currency in August 2024 after the Bangladeshi taka due to strong dollar demand and outflows from domestic equities.
- It depreciated by 0.2% during the month.
- The two were the only Asian currencies that experienced a decline against the US dollar over the month.
- The rupee settled at Rs 83.86 per dollar.

- Current Financial Year (FY25): The rupee has depreciated by 0.6% so far in the current financial year.
- It was the third most stable Asian currency against the US dollar in FY24, following the Hong Kong dollar and Singapore dollar.
- Factors Affecting the Rupee: The depreciation was influenced by a slowdown in Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) inflows, particularly in the equity segment, and increased dollar demand from importers.

- Stability was largely due to timely intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

World Bank advises India to reassess RCEP decision to achieve $1 trillion export target

UPI Sees 37% Surge in Transactions, Reaching ₹80.8 Lakh Crore ($964 Billion) from April-July 2024
- Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which has emerged as the world’s most popular alternative payments method (APM), processed transactions to the tune of ₹80.8 lakh crore ($964 billion) in April-July 2024, a sharp 37% year-on-year (y-o-y) surge compared to the same timeframe the previous year.
- Transactions on UPI totalled Rs 20.64 lakh crore in July this year or about $247 billion.
- Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has emerged as the world’s most popular alternative payment method, with 3729.1 transactions per second in 2023.
- This is a 58% increase over the 2,348 transactions every second in 2022. UPI is a real-time payment system that allows users to make a bank transfer instantly.
- Skrill has emerged as the second-most popular alternative payment method in the world.
- Skrill processes 1,553.8 transactions per second and processed 49 billion transactions in 2023.
- Pix is the 3rd-most popular alternative payment method worldwide, processing 1,331.8 transactions per second.
- Pix is an online instant payment platform introduced by the Central Bank of Brazil in late 2020.
