- Justice Mishra was the first non-CJI to be appointed as the NHRC chairperson after the amendment to the Protection of Human Rights Act in 2019.
- Selection Process:A high-powered committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi met on December 18, 2023, to select the new chairperson of NHRC.
- The President of India appoints the NHRC chairperson based on the recommendation of a selection committee, typically consisting of a former Chief Justice of India (CJI) or a retired judge of the Supreme Court.
