Japan to invest Rs. 13,000 crore in northeast in infrastructure projects

  • The government of Japan has decided to invest an amount of 205.784 billion yen, equivalent to approximately Rs 13,000 crore, in several ongoing as well as new projects in different states of northeastern region
  • Some of the important projects in which Japan will collaborate include the Guwahati water supply project, Guwahati sewage project, the northeast road network connectivity improvement project spread over Assam and Meghalaya and northeast network connectivity improvement project in
  • Other schemes include biodiversity conservation and forest management project in Sikkim, sustainable forest management project in Tripura, technical cooperation project for sustainable agriculture and irrigation in Mizoram and forest management project in Nagaland

Arjun Munda Launches ‘E-Governance Initiatives for ST Welfare Schemes’ 

  • Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Arjun Munda launched the “e-governance initiatives for ST Welfare schemes” at a function organized by Ministry of Tribal Affairs
  • A power point presentation on these new e-governance initiatives was made on the occasion.
  • Munda applauded the teamworkefforts of the Ministry of Tribal affairs for thesee-governance initiatives for Scheduled Tribes Welfare schemes and said that as per the “SabkaSaath, SabkaVikas and SabkaVishwas”, these e-governance initiatives will serve their purpose of the betterment of tribal communities across the nation.
  • Ministry of Tribal Affairs has developed online portals namely DBT Tribal (https://dbttribal.gov.in/) and NGO Grants Online Application & Tracking System (https://ngograntsmota.gov.in/) for bringing in greater e-Governance in implementation of welfare schemes for STs.

Chandrayaan-2 to be launched on July 15: ISRO

  • Isro officially announced that the Chandrayaan-2 will be launched at 2.51 am on July 15 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Chandrayaan-2 will have three modules, Orbiter, Lander (Vikram), and Rover (Pragyan). These are designed to carry out various experiments, including mapping of the surface, minerals, chemical composition, detection sparse water molecules above the lunar surface and rock formations.
  • The cost of the mission-including foreign service for navigation-is Rs. 603 crore, an additional Rs. 375 crore will be the launch cost
  • The total weight of the spacecraft will be 3.8 tonne
  • The lunar landing is expected to take place on 6 or 7 September on the unexplored south polar region of the moon.
  • Chandrayaan-1, which was launched on 22 October 2008, orbited the moon more than 3,400 times and played a crucial part in the discovery of water molecules on the lunar surface

SBI launches digital residential property show in Hyderabad

  • SBI has set up a new marketing outfit called ‘Destination: The Home Shoppe’ near IKEA in Hitec City
  • At this Home Shoppe, the bank will have a digital display of residential projects from leading developers and approved by SBI
  • It will function as a virtual property show bringing builder, customers and SBI under one roof. The Home Shoppe would facilitate the short-listing of projects by prospective buyers. The bank has already got 12 builders with 17 projects on board.

Former IAS Officer IV Subba Rao to Continue as Secretary to Vice President Naidu

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the continuation of Rao, a retired IAS officer, as secretary to the vice president on contract basis in the rank and pay of secretary of Government of India, it said.
  • His tenure will be co-terminus with the tenure of the vice president

Nripendra Misra to continue as principal secretary to PM Narendra Modi

  • Nripendra Misra and PK Mishra were re-appointed as Principal Secretary and Additional Principal Secretary, respectively, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Cabinet minister rank.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved both the appointments with effect from May 31.
  • Their appointments will be co-terminus with the term of the prime minister.

Thawarchand Gehlot appointed Leader of Rajya Sabha

  • Thawarchand Gehlot has been appointed as the Leader of House in the Rajya Sabha. He will replace former Union Minister Arun Jaitley
  • Union Minister for Railways and Commerce Piyush Goyal will take charge as the Deputy Leader for the Upper House of the Indian Parliament.
  • Thawarchand Gehlot is the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment in Narendra Modi cabinet. He has held the portfolio since 2014.
  • The BJP leader became a Rajya Sabha member in 2012 and was re-elected to the Upper House of Parliament from Madhya Pradesh in 2018. His Rajya Sabha term will end in 2024.

Reckitt Benckiser names PepsiCo executive Laxman Narasimhan its new CEO

  • British consumer goods giant Reckitt Benckiser named PepsiCo executive Laxman Narasimhan as its Chief Executive Officer
  • Narasimhan was serving as PepsiCo’s global Chief Commercial Officer. He will be join the company as CEO-deignate and will be appointed to the board on July 16
  • He will become group CEO on September 1, He will succeed Rakesh Kapoor

JNU to honour Nirmala Sitharaman, S Jaishankar with ‘Distinguished Alumni Award’

  • Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will confer the ‘Distinguished Alumni Award’ to Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, both are alumni of the New Delhi-based Central University
  • Executive Council of JNU approved a proposal to bestow the award on Finance Minister Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, during the third convocation of the varsity to be held in August this year.
  • Sitharaman completed her M.A and M. Phil degrees from the School of Social Sciences and School of International Studies respectively.
  • Jaishankar completed his M.Phil and doctoral research in the School of International Studies where he specialised in nuclear diplomacy

Priyanka Chopra to be Honoured with UNICEF’s Humanitarian Award

  • Unicef will honour Indian actress Priyanka Chopra with the Danny Kaye Humanitarian Award at the Unicef Snowflake Ball in December
  • The award is named after actor-philanthropist Danny Kaye, who was UNICEF’s first Goodwill Ambassador
  • She has been a part of United Nation’s global “Girl Up” Campaign and is associated with several NGOs in India to raise awareness about ways to improve the education, health and safety of girl child in India.
  • Priyanka has worked with Unicef since 2006 and was appointed the national and global Unicef Goodwill Ambassador for Child Rights in 2010 and 2016, respectively.

India ranks 141 in annual Global Peace Index

  • India’s rank has slipped five places to 141 among 163 countries on the Global Peace Index 2019
  • Australian think tank Institute for Economics & Peace ranks countries according to their level of peacefulness based on three thematic domains — the level of societal safety and security, the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict and the degree of militarisation in 163 countries and territories by taking into account 23 indicators.
  • Iceland remains the most peaceful country in the world, a position it has held since 2008
  • Afghanistan is now the least peaceful country in the world, replacing Syria, which is now the second least peaceful. South Sudan, Yemen, and Iraq comprise the remaining five least peaceful countries.
  • In South Asia, Bhutan topped the index with 15th rank, followed by Sri Lanka 72, Nepal 76 and Bangladesh 101. The neighbouring country Pakistan has been ranked 153rd on the index.
  • “India’s rank has moved down to 141 from in GPI 2019 (from its previous position at 136), among 163 countries, and it stands at fifth in the (South Asian) region,”

India tests hypersonic demonstrator vehicle launched from Agni I platform

  • India was conducted a successful first test flight of the indigenously developed Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV) from a base off the Odisha coast.
  • The only other countries that possess this technology are the US, Russia and China
  • The HSTDV is an unmanned scramjet (allowing supersonic combustion) demonstration vehicle that can cruise up to a speed of mach 6 (or six times the speed of sound) and rise up to an altitude of 32. km in 20 seconds
  • It is being developed by DRDO with assistance from Israel and the UK and Russia.

Messi is world’s highest paid athlete, Kohli only Indian on the list

  • Lionel Messi was the world’s highest-paid athlete over the past year, Forbes reported on in its annual sporting rich list, and India cricket captain Virat Kohli was the sole Indian to feature on the list, ranked 100th on the table.
  • According to the Forbes 2019 list, Virat Kohli is estimated to earn $21m from endorsements and $4m from salary and winnings, taking his total tally to $25m for the last 12 months.
  • Notably, Virat Kohli was ranked 83rd on last year’s list and has moved down to the 100th spot despite an increase of $1m in endorsements.
  • Messi has dethroned retired boxer Floyd Mayweather as the sports world’s highest earner, raking in $127 million via salary and endorsement deals.
  • Athletes from across 25 countries made it to the list this year, an increase from 22 in 2018.

IAAF to rebrand as World Athletics

  • The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has rebranded itself as World Athletics and revealed a new logo to reflect its name change.
  • The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) was initially founded in 1912 as the International Amateur Athletic Federation
  • The new brand identity will begin its rollout in October after the world championships in Doha and following congress’ approval of the change to the federation’s legal name.
  • The new logo features the ‘W’ of ‘world’, which is meant to represent the symbol of an athlete’s arms raised in victory. The logo also incorporates the ‘A’ of ‘athletics’, which seeks to represent an athlete’s focus as they prepare for the road; and an arc over the ‘W’ and ‘A’ to represent the athletics community coming together.
