World Bee Day

  • 20th May is observed across the world as World Bee Day. This is in honour of Slovenian Anton Jansa, who was born on this day in 1773 and is widely known as the pioneer of beekeeping.
  • To raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development, the UN designated 20 May as World Bee Day.

Meghalaya government approves setting up of Farmers’ Commission

  • The Meghalaya government approved setting up of a commission to look into the problem faced by farmers
  • State cabinet approved the proposal made by the Agriculture Department to set up the Farmers’ Commission in line with the resolution passed at the ‘farmers’ parliament’,
  • The ‘farmers’ parliament’, first of its kind in the country, was organised last December and was attended by scientists, bureaucrats, apart from farmers, to discuss issues related to the agri situation in the state

HDFC Capital launches ‘HeART’to mentor real estate technology companies

  • HDFC Capital Advisors, a wholly-owned subsidiary of HDFC Ltd, launched a new initiative called ‘HDFC Affordable Real Estate and Technology Program (HeART).
  • The HeART program seeks to mentor, partner and invest in real estate technology companies that drive innovation and efficiencies within the affordable housing ecosystem.
  • HDFC Capital will also be partnering with leading academic institutions, industry platforms and accelerators to create an ecosystem that supports various components in the development affordable housing

India-Botswana hold Foreign Office Consultations in Delhi

  • The third round of Foreign Office Consultations between India and Botswana was held in New Delhi.
  • The Indian side was led by Joint Secretary, East and Southern Africa in the Ministry of External Affairs Dr. Neena Malhotra.
  • The Botswana side was headed by Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation of Botswana Government, Tapiwa Mongwa.
  • The deliberations provided an opportunity to review the entire gamut of bilateral relations, including political, economic, commercial, defence, consular and international cooperation.

11th Joint Consular Committee meet between India and Iran held in New Delhi

  • The 11th Joint Consular Committee meeting between India and Iran took place in New Delhi.
  • The early conclusion of Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance on civil and commercial matters and extending the longer duration of e-Visa for each other nationals on reciprocity.
  • The meeting provided an opportunity to review the status of ongoing cooperation in consular and visa related issues and to discuss ways and means to further expand people to people contacts and promote friendly exchanges between India and Iran.

Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant named new brand ambassadors of Himalaya MEN 

  • India cricket captain Virat Kohli and emerging wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant has been named as new official brand ambassadors of the country’s leading wellness firm, the Himalaya Drug Company.
  • Himalaya has signed Kohli and ICC Emerging Player of the Year 2018, Pant to promote its ‘Men Face Care Range’.

Australian PM Scott Morrison wins federal elections

  • In Australia, Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s Liberal-National Coalition won the federal elections.
  • Prime Minister Morrison has declared victory after his coalition defied opinion polls and secured a surprise win over the opposition Labor Party.

Dr P.K. Mishra awarded prestigious Sasakawa Award 2019 by UNDRR

  • United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) has conferred the Sasakawa Award 2019 for Disaster Risk Reduction to Dr. Pramod Kumar Mishra.
  • He is an Additional Principal Secretary to Prime Minister of India. The award was announced  at the Award Ceremony during the ongoing 6thSession of Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) 2019 at Geneva.
  • The United Nations Sasakawa Award is the most prestigious international award in the area of Disaster Risk Management. The theme of the 2019 Sasakawa award was Building Inclusive and Resilient Societies”.
  • P. K. Mishra from India received the 2019 Sasakawa award in recognition of his long-term dedication to improve the resilience of communities most exposed to disasters and his personal commitment to social inclusion as a critical principle to reduce inequality and poverty, enhancing the safety net of the socially and economically marginalized.

Sir Andy Murray receives knighthood at Buckingham Palace

  • Sir Andy Murray has received a knighthood from the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace.
  • The knighthood was announced in the 2016 New Year Honours, capping a momentous 12 months which saw him win a second Wimbledon title, retain his Olympic crown, named BBC Sports Personality of the Year for the third time, and finish the season as world number one.
  • He was joined by Sir Philip Pullman who was knighted for his services to literature and BBC Springwatch presenter Chris Packham for services to nature conservation.

NAARM gets mandate for World Bank – funded NAHEP project

  • The National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM) has been awarded a World Bank-funded National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP) project.
  • The project, which is referred to as component 2A, calls for investments in Indian Council of Agricultural Research Leadership in Agricultural Higher Education.
  • With a budget outlay of 69.41 crore, the three-year project is aimed at establishing partnerships with globally recognised agricultural higher education institutions. It is also for establishing career development centres at agriculture universities.
  • Besides NAARM, Indian Agricultural Statistical Research Institute (IASRI) and National Institute of Agricultural Economics and Policy Research of Indian Council of Agricultural Research will take part in the implementation of the project.

India sets Guinness World Records of ‘largest laundry lesson’

  • With 400 young Indian men participating across the country to learn laundry lessons to share the responsibility of cleaning clothes along with the female members of their homes, India achieved the Guinness World Records certificate for the largest laundry lesson.
  • National award-winning actor Anil Kapoor joined the function which was initiated by Ariel India and hosted by Mandira Bedi. The event was part of the #sharetheload campaign.
  • Earlier, the largest laundry lesson involved 318 people, achieved by Lion NANOX Team (Japan) at Lion Hirai Research Laboratory, in Edogawa, Tokyo, Japan, on November 29, 2017.

Sunny Pawar bags Best Child Actor award at New York Indian Film Festival

  • Actor Sunny Pawar has bagged the Best Child Actor award for Chippa at the 19th New York Indian Film Festival. The 11-year-old, who hails from a slum in Kunchi Kurve Nagar in Mumbai, shot to fame with Australian director Garth Davis’ acclaimed 2016 film Lion.
  • Apart from AACTA and the recent award at the New York Indian Film Festival, Sunny has also received a Special Mention Grand Jury Prize at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Indian Navy successfully test-fires MRSAM missile

  • The Indian Navy has successfully test-fired a Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM), achieving a significant milestone to enhance its anti-air warfare capability.
  • The test-firing of the missile was undertaken on the western seaboard by Indian naval ships Kochi and Chennai.
  • The test-firing of the missile was carried out jointly by the Indian Navy, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Israel Aerospace Industries.

Spanish Naval ship on Mumbai visit from May 18 to 23

  • Spanish Navy ship ‘Mendez Nunez’ (Frigate) with a crew of 30 officers and 135 sailors is on Mumbai visit from May 18 to 23. The ship is on Overseas Deployment and is docked at the Mumbai Port Trust.
  • According to the communique, Indian Naval Ships (INS) and submarines have been visiting Spanish ports during overseas deployments.
  • The visit by the Spanish Navy ship to Mumbai would further strengthen the existing bonds between the two navies

India, Singapore conduct SIMBEX-19 naval exercise in the South China Sea

  • The 26th Edition of Singapore India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) -19 has commenced in the South China Sea
  • In addition to IN Ships Kolkata and Shakti, Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft P8I will also participate in the exercise along with Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) Ships steadfast and valiant, maritime patrol aircraft Fokker-50 and F-16 fighter aircraft.
  • The four-day naval exercise will include various maritime combat drills such as advanced aerial tracking, coordinated targeting tactical exercises and weapon firing on aerial and surface targets

Double Olympic biathlon champion Dahlmeier retires aged 25

  • Germany’s double Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier announced her retirement at the age of just 25 after struggling with health issues.
  • She has won seven world championship gold medals, and last year in Pyeongchang she became the first female biathlete to win both the sprint and the pursuit at the same Olympics.

2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament begins in Guwahati

  • The Second India Open International Boxing Tournament begins at Sarusajai stadium in Guwahati.
  • India has fielded a strong contingent of 38 men and 37 women in the tournament including Mary Kom in 51-kilogram category.
  • 16 countries will participate in the tournament where nearly 200 boxers will vying for the podium.
  • The gold medalist will get 2500 US dollar and Silver medalist will earn 1000 US dollar.
  • The competition will be held in a total of 18 categories, 10 in men and 8 in women.
