World Contraception Day
- World Contraception Day is observed on 26 September annually.
- It is a global campaign to improve the awareness about the contraceptive methods available and enable the young people to make informed decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health.
World Maritime Day
- World Maritime Day is observed annually on 26 September to raise awareness about the importance of gender equality which is also necessary to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and also to highlight the contribution of women in the maritime sector.
- The theme of 2019 is “Empowering women in the maritime community”.

Centre amends pension rules to benefit family of government servant
- The Central government amended pension rules to extend benefits to the family of a government servant at an enhanced rate of 50 per cent of last pay drawn, for a period of 10 years even if he dies within seven years of joining service.
- The Central government amended Rule 54 of the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 1972.
- As per the amended Rule 54, the family of a government servant, who dies within seven years of joining service, will also be eligible for family pension at an enhanced rate of 50 per cent of last pay drawn, for a period of 10 years.
- On the death of a government servant while in service, the family is entitled to a family pension in accordance with Rule 54 of the pension rules.
- In case the government servant had rendered service of fewer than seven years before his death, the rate of family pension was 30 per cent from the beginning and family pension at an enhanced rate of 50 per cent of last pay drawn was not payable to the family.
- The amendments would be effective from October 1, 2019. However, the families of government servants who died before the completion of service of seven years within 10 years before October 1, 2019, will also be eligible for family pension at enhanced rates with effect from October 1, 2019.

Assam Government launches housing loan subsidy scheme
- The Assam Government has launched a housing loan subsidy scheme to provide financial assistance on purchase or construction of the first house for a family.
- Assam Finance Minister HimantaBiswaSarma launched the scheme – AponarAponGhar in Guwahati.
- The subsidy up to 2 lakh 50 thousand rupees will be provided for loan amounts from five lakh to 40 lakh rupees.
- This initiative would provide impetus to the economy and led to the expansion of real estate in the state.

Sebastian Coe gets re-elected as IAAF chief
- Britain’s Sebastian Coe was re-elected as president of the IAAF for a second term following four years dominated by doping and the issue of gender.
- XimenaRestrepo, Sergey Bubka, Geoffrey Gardner and Nawaf Bin Mohammed Al Saud were elected as vice-presidents.
- Restrepo will become the first woman to serve as an IAAF Vice President.

Visa appoints PV Sindhu as brand ambassador for two years
- Payment technology company Visa announced that it has signed up world badminton champion PV Sindhu as its brand ambassador for two years.
- Besides promoting the brand through advertising campaigns, Sindhu has also become an athlete member of Team Visa for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
EC appoints Madhuri Dixit as goodwill ambassador for Maharashtra Assembly polls
- Actor Madhuri Dixit has been chosen as “goodwill ambassador” by the Chief Electoral Office in Maharashtra to create awareness among people about the importance of voting.
- State Assembly polls are scheduled for October 21 and results will be declared on October 24.
- Dixit will be seen in a video titled ‘Let’s Vote” speaking about the democratic process and role of voters in the development of the country.

Ramanujan prize for U.K. mathematician
- The SASTRA Ramanujan prize for 2019 will be awarded to mathematician Adam Harper, Assistant Professor with the University of Warwick, England.
- The prize carries a citation and an award of $10,000 and is conferred annually on mathematicians from across the world, who are less than 32 years of age, working in an area influenced by the genius SrinivasaRamanujan.
Rajasthan girl receives ‘Changemaker’ award by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
- The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation conferred the Goalkeepers Global Goals Awards to PM Modi for the progress India has made in providing safe sanitation under his leadership.
- At the same ceremony, PayalJangid, a 17-year-old girl from Rajasthan made the entire nation proud when she received the Changemaker Award.
- PayalJangid won the award because she helped discourage child marriages and also successfully persuaded parents to keep their children in education.
P.T. Usha honoured with IAAF Veteran Pin Award
- Indian track and field legend PT Usha was conferred with the prestigious International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Veteran Pin Award, for her contribution to the growth of sport
- IAAF chief Sebastian Coe presented her the Veteran Pin during the 52nd IAAF Congress at Doha
- She was one of three persons from Asia to receive the honour.
- Usha is one of the greatest sprinters to have come out of India, often called the “queen of track and field”

SiddharthShanghvi pens book on mortality
- Award-winning author SiddharthDhanvantShanghvi will come out with a memoir on death and grief, drawing on a string of personal losses – of his parents and a beloved pet.
- In “Loss”, the author will chart the landscape of bereavement as he takes the reader down the dark, winding path to healing.
- Shanghvi, whose first novel “The Last Song of Dusk” won the Betty Trask Award, the PremioGrinzane Cavour, and was nominated for the IMPAC Prize.
- Shanghvi, whose second book “The Lost Flamingoes of Bombay” was shortlisted for the Man Asian Prize.
- “Loss” will hit stores next summer.
AYUSH Ministry launched ‘Professor Ayushman’ — comic book Series
- A comic book series with ‘Professor Ayushman’ as the central character has been unveiled to make children aware of the importance of medicinal plants and their use for home remedies.
- The comic book, conceived by the National Medicinal Plants Board, talks about plants like Aloe Vera, Tulsi, Amla, Giloy, Neem, Ashvagandha and Brahmi.
- The AYUSH Ministry has come out with the book that will be available for free and schools can approach the National Medicinal Plant Board

India announces 12 million dollar grant for high impact developmental projects in Pacific Island countries
- Prime Minister NarendraModi met leaders of the Pacific Islands Developing States (PSIDS) on the sidelines of the UNGA session in New York.
- Prime Minister highlighted the need for development policies to be inclusive and sustainable to reduce inequality and contribute to empowerment and improvement of the quality of people’s lives.
- India was equally committed to tackle the impact of climate change and supported the efforts of the PSIDS to achieve their developmental goals through necessary developmental and technical assistance.
- PM Modi announced allocation of 12 million US Dollar grant towards the implementation of high impact developmental project in the area of their choice.
- In addition, a concessional Line of Credit of 150 Million dollars which can be availed by the PSIDS for undertaking solar, renewable energy and climate-related projects based on each country’s requirement was announced.
- Mr Modi along with others world leaders also inaugurated the Gandhi Solar Park at the UN headquarters and released a commemorative stamp issued by the UN on the occasion of Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary.
ICC announces partnership with Facebook for carrying out digital content
- The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday announced a partnership with social media giant Facebook for carrying out a range of digital content across four years.
- The content will include match recaps, in-play key moments and other match and feature content.
- ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup became an unprecedented success as it netted around 4.6 billion video views across ICC’s digital and social media platforms.
- The package includes major global events of ICC such as Women’s T20 World Cup 2020, Men’s T20 World Cup 2020, Women’s Cricket World Cup 2021, Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 among others.

- Reliance Industries’ Chairman MukeshAmbani has topped the list of richest Indians for the eighth consecutive year, with a net worth of ₹3,80,700crore, according to the latest IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List.
- London-based SP Hinduja& family, with assets worth ₹1,86,500 crore, retained the second rank in the list, followed by Wipro founder AzimPremji at the third place with a wealth of ₹1,17,100 crore.
- L N Mittal, chairman and CEO of ArcelorMittal, was the 4th richest with a wealth of ₹1,07,300crore and GautamAdani was placed on the 5th position with a net worth of ₹94,500 crore.
- Others in the top 10 include UdayKotak at the 6th place with a wealth of₹94,100 crore, Cyrus S Poonawalla at 7th position with ₹88,800 crore assets, Cyrus PallonjiMistry at 8th spot with a wealth of ₹76,800 crore, ShapoorPallonji at 9th position with a net worth of ₹76,800 crore and DilipShanghvi at 10th slot with ₹71,500-crore wealth.
Infosys ranks 3rd in Forbes’ list of ‘The World’s Best Regarded Companies’
- Infosys has been ranked third in the Forbes’ list of World’s Best Regarded Companies
- Global payments technology company Visa and Italian car-maker Ferrari on the first and second position, respectively
- Infosys jumped to the third spot from 31st position in 2018.
- The other top ten companies in the list for 2019 are Netflix at the 4th position, followed by PayPal (5), Microsoft (6), Walt Disney (7), Toyota Motor (8), Mastercard (9), Costco Wholesale (10).
- Indian companies Tata Consultancy Services (22nd position) and Tata Motors (31) featured among the top 50 in the coveted list.
- Forbes partnered with Statista to prepare the list that includes 250 companies which are ranked based on trustworthiness, social conduct, the strength of their products and services and how they fare as employers.

- Popular Telugu film comedian VenuMadhav passed away after a prolonged illness.
- Mimicry artiste-turned-comedian, VenuMadhav made his debut in movies with Sampradayam in 1996 and was last seen in the film Dr. Paramanandaiah Students Gang in 2016.
