MSME Day

  • Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) Day is celebrated each year on 27 June.
  • MSME Day 2019 is dedicated to raising awareness of the need for greater investment into small and mid-sized businesses in developing countries but it is also a celebration of the gigantic contribution smaller companies make to the global economy, often away from the spotlight.
  • This includes the launch of ITC’s flagship report, the SME Competitiveness Outlook 2019, which this year explores financing for MSMEs under the heading Big Money for Small Business.

Police station in Sataratops SMART survey

  • Rahimatpur police station in Satara district in western Maharashtra has emerged as the State topper in a survey based on the ‘SMART’ policing concept
  • ‘SMART’ — strict and sensitive, modern and mobile, alert and accountable, reliable and responsive, techno-savvy and trained
  • The Quality Council of India (QCI), which executed the survey, assessed 87 shortlisted police stations across the country on a number of parameters like performance in controlling crime, infrastructure of the police building, mess and optimal use of technology, and citizen feedback.

Payments data must be stored in systems located in India, says RBI

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said all data related to payment transactions must be stored in the country and that such information, if processed abroad, will have to be brought back within 24 hours.
  • It said that all data related to payments must be stored in systems located only in India.
  • It further clarified that there is no bar on processing of payment transactions outside India if so desired by the PSOs. However, the data shall be stored only in India after the processing.

U.K. Sinha-led RBI panel suggests5,000 crore stressed asset fund for MSMEs

  • A Reserve Bank of India (RBI) committee has suggested a Rs. 5,000 crore stressed asset fund for domestic micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in a relief to small businesses hurt by demonetization, the goods and services tax and an ongoing liquidity crunch.
  • The committee to study the problems faced by MSMEs was chaired by U.K. Sinha, former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India.
  • The committee recommends for the creation of a distressed asset fund, with a corpus of 5,000 crore, structured to assist units in clusters where a change in the external environment.
  • The committee also suggested forming a government-sponsored Fund of Funds of 10,000 crore to support venture capital and private equity firms investing in MSMEs.

Flipkart to roll out reward system SuperCoins from July

  • E-commerce firm Flipkart will roll out multi-brand rewards ecosystem ‘Super Coins’ using which its customers can shop on various online platforms such as Zomato, OYO and Makemytrip.
  • Super Coins can be earned on all Flipkart transactions and partner services hosted on the Flipkart App and can be redeemed for exciting rewards from an ever-increasing rewards portfolio, making every single transaction a rewarding experience for customers.
  • Flipkart Plus members will get double Super Coins than non-Plus members.

CURRENT AFFAIRS: APPOINTMENTS AND RESIGNATION

IOA and FIH chief Batra elected IOC member

  • Indian Olympic Association president NarinderBatra was elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee.
  • He has already become the first Indian to head an international federation of an Olympic sport — that of FIH.
  • Other than Batra, Reliance Foundation Chairperson Nita Ambani is the only other member of the IOC who was elected in 2016. She is the first Indian woman to be elected to the prestigious seat.

Amitabh Kant gets two year extension as NITI Aayog CEO

  • The appointments committee of the cabinet has approved extension of tenure of Amitabh Kant as chief executive officer of the NITI Aayog for a further period of two years beyond June 30, 2019 up to June 30, 2021.
  • The development comes after PM NarendraModi approved the reconstitution of the policy think tank of the government, NITI Aayog.
  • He was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of the government think tank on February 17, 2016 for a two-year term.

Samant Kumar Goel to head RAW, Arvind Kumar appointed new IB chief

  • Senior IPS officers Arvind Kumar and Samant Kumar Goel were appointed chiefs of Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), respectively.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister NarendraModi, approved their appointments for a fixed two-year tenure, an order issued by the Personnel Ministry.
  • Mr Goel is a 1984 batch IPS officer and will replace Anil K Dhamsana at the top post.
  • Kumar will succeed Rajiv Jain as the chief of the India’s internal intelligence agency.

Surendra Ahuja appointed MD of Boeing Defence India

  • Defence and aerospace major Boeing Co appointed former Indian Navy official Surendra Ahuja as the managing director of its defence vertical, Boeing Defence India (BDI).
  • Ahuja had earlier held the position of Rear Admiral before opting for early retirement in 2018.

Nirmala Sitharaman on list of 100 most powerful women influencing India-UK relations

  • Nirmala Sitharaman, Finance Minister of India, is among the 100 most influential women driving the UK-India relationship forward alongside one of Britain’s senior-most Cabinet ministers Penny Mordaunt.
  • The ‘100 Most Influential in UK-India Relations: Celebrating Women’ list was launched by UK Home Secretary SajidJavid to mark India Day in the Houses of Parliament in London.

Max Bupa partners with MobiKwik to sell bite-sized health insurance products

  • Max Bupa, a standalone health insurer, has entered into a strategic partnership with MobiKwik, a fintech platform, to promote affordable and convenient bite sized group health insurance products for MobiKwik’s 107 Million customers across the country.
  • Under this tie-up, Max Bupa will come up with slew of innovative offerings, including a Cancer cover at nominal premium and a HospiCash product for MobiKwik’s vast customer base.
  • Priced at an annual premium of 135, HospiCash will offer Rs. 500 per day hospital allowance for upto 30 days in a year.

IOC strips world boxing body AIBA of Olympic status

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) stripped Olympic status from the troubled world boxing body AIBA.
  • IOC will now organize qualifying and final tournaments for the 2020 Tokyo Games.
  • The International Boxing Association (AIBA) is the first federation to have been stripped of its right to organise its own sport at an Olympics.

Sofia Kenin beats Belinda Bencic to claim Mallorca Open title

  • American 20-year-old Sofia Kenin saved three match points on her way to beating third seed Belinda Bencic in the Mallorca Open grass court final.
  • This was her second WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) singles title of the season.
  • She claimed her first WTA singles title in the Australian Open 2019 held at Hobart, Australia in January, 2019.

Girish Koushik becomes India’s 63rd Grandmaster

  • Girish A. Koushik, the 22-year-old from Mysuru became India’s 63rd Grandmaster at the 37th Balaton International Chess Festival in Hungary.
  • Girish had completed his second GM norm in Mallorca late in May, and the third in Budapest the following week. Only 11 Elo rating points separated him from the figure of 2500 (live), and he duly crossed the line in Balatonlelle.

Veteran actor – director Vijaya Nirmala passed away

  • Veteran South Indian film actor and director Vijaya Nirmala passed away
  • Vijaya Nirmala started her career as a child actor. At the age of five, she made her acting debut in 1950 Tamil film “Machcha Rekkai” and four years later she forayed into Telugu cinema with the film Panduranga Mahatyam.
  • She holds a Guinness Record for most number of films directed by a female filmmaker.
  • n 2008, the Andhra Pradesh government conferred her with Raghupathi Venkaiah award for her contribution to Telugu cinema

Eminent social activist Jharna Dhara Chowdhury passed away

  • Eminent Social Activist and secretary of the Gandhi Ashram Trust in Jayag, Noakhali, Bangladesh Jharna Dhara Chowdhury passed away
  • In recognition of her work, Jharna Dhara Chowdhury was honoured with Padma Shri in 2013. She was awarded Jamnalal Bajaj award in 1998.
  • She devoted her whole life to promoting peace, communal harmony and social justice. She was deeply influenced by Gandhian principles of non-violence and communal harmony.
