World Pharmacist Day

  • World Pharmacist Day observed on every September 25 creates awareness about the role of a pharmacist in improving health. It highlights the importance of medicine experts in one’s life.
  • This day was formulated by the FIP Council (International Pharmaceutical Federation) in Istanbul, Turkey in 2009. Pharmacist day emphasises on the contribution of a pharmacist in healthcare.
  • The theme declared for world pharmacist day 2019 is “Safe and effective medicines for all”.
  • This theme focuses on promoting the crucial role of a pharmacist in safeguarding patient safety by improving medicine use and reducing medication errors.

World Tourism Day

  • World Tourism Day is celebrated every year on September 27
  • The objective of the day is to acquaint people with the social, economic, cultural and political importance of tourism and make them responsible tourists in turn
  • United Nations World Tourism Organization announced September 27 as World Tourism Day in 1980 and has been celebrating the day since then
  • Theme for 2019 – “Tourism and Jobs — A Better Future For All”

Govt reconstitutes EAC-PM till 2021, BibekDebroy retained as chairman

  • The government reconstituted the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister for a period of another two years.
  • Rathin Roy from the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy and Shamika Ravi of Brookings Institution have been dropped as part-time members. SajjidChenoy, India economist at JP Morgan is the new part-time member.
  • Part-time member AshimaGoyal of Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research and full time members BibekDebroy of NitiAayog and RatanWatal will continue to be part of the EAC-PM. Debroy retains his role as chairman of the EAC-PM while former Finance Secretary Watal will continue being the member-secretary.
  • The strength of the reconstituted EAC-PM has been reduced from five to four, comprising of two full-time members and two part-time members.

First Indigenous Fuel Cell System launched on CSIR Foundation Day

  • The President of India Ram NathKovind unveiled the first Indigenous High Temperature Fuel Cell System on the occasion of CSIR Foundation Day in New Delhi
  • The System was developed by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in partnership with Indian industries under India’s flagship program named “New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative (NMITLI)”
  • The 5.0 kW fuel cell system generates power in a green manner using methanol / bio-methane, with heat and water as bi-products
  • The Fuel Cells developed are based on High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane (HTPEM) Technology.

APEDA holds International Conference-Cum-Buyer seller meet in Agartala

  • Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, in cooperation with government of Tripura organised an International Conference-cum-Buyer Seller Meet in Agartala
  • The meet was organized to showcase the export potential of agricultural products from North East Region (NER) and Tripura in particular.
  • Twenty international buyers from 8 countries – Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Indonesia, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Greece participated in it.

India Tourism Mart exhibition inaugurated in New Delhi

  • Culture and Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel inaugurated the exhibition of India Tourism Mart (ITM), 2019 in New Delhi
  • Over 240 international delegates from 51 countries and 160 exhibitors from across the country are taking in part in the second edition of ITM
  • The Ministry of Tourism and the Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism and Hospitality have jointly organized this Mart.
  • The event will provide a platform at the national level for trade and hospitality service providers in the country to interact and conduct business with their counterparts from overseas.

UP govt. announces Rs. 6,000 annual aid for triple talaq victims

  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced an annual support of Rs. 6,000 to the victims of triple talaq till their rehabilitation and said they will get free legal aid.
  • The victims of triple talaq under the PradhanMantri Jan VikasKaryakram (PMJVK) and such women should be given rights over waqf properties and also called for several welfare measures that should be undertaken for their rehabilitation
  • Educated women should be absorbed in government jobs as per their qualifications while arrangements should also be made for providing them shelter and education under various schemes

PNB launches Preventive Vigilance portal

  • Punjab National Bank (PNB) launched a Preventive Vigilance portal to facilitate its staff members to check procedural lapses and promote good practices.
  • Besides other activities, such as inauguration of e-pledge mission, social outreach through technological platforms for promoting the central theme of ‘Integrity – A way of Life’, the bank introduced technology based solutions through the Preventive Vigilance (PV) portal.
  • The PV portal will facilitate all staff members to contribute towards arresting procedural lapses and unhealthy practices, and will usher in a coherent climate conducive to banking for the modern age.

UNCTAD sees India growth moderating to 6% in 2019

  • The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has projected India’s GDP growth rate at 6% in the calendar year (CY) 2019.
  • As per UNCTAD, India’s economy grew 7.4% in CY18.

  • The Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) comprises chiefs of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force and the senior most member is appointed its chairperson.

Bulgaria’s KristalinaGeorgieva appointed new IMF chief

  • Bulgaria’s KristalinaGeorgieva has been selected as the new head of the International Monetary Fund(IMF).
  • She is the first person from an emerging market economy to lead the IMF. The economist succeeds Christine Lagarde for a five-year term from October.

Journalist Paolo Borrometi Wins Mackler Prize for Mafia Coverage in Italy

  • An Italian journalist assaulted over his coverage of mafia activity in Sicily and now living under police protection was presented with the Peter Mackler Award for his work.
  • Paolo Borrometi, 36, worked for Italian agency AGI before founding the news website La Spia in 2013, where he documented the role of organized crime in local agribusiness.

  • The former president also acknowledged the MP’s input on liberalising trade when the latter was the commerce minister in the short-lived Chandra Shekhar government in 1990-91.

PM Modi hosts Caribbean leaders, announces $14-million grant to CARICOM

  • Prime Minister NarendraModi met the leaders of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) during the first-ever India-Caricom leaders’ summit here, with a focus on fighting climate change and increasing India’s participation with the grouping.
  • Modi announced a $14-million grant for community development projects in the CARICOM and another $150 million line of credit for solar, renewable energy and climate-change related projects.
  • The CARICOM grouping has 15 members-states and five associate members.
  • Caricom countries came together in 1973 to form an economic and political community that works jointly to shape policies for the region and encourages economic growth and trade.

INDO-KAZAKHSTAN Joint Military Exercise KAZIND – 2019 to be held in Pithoragarh

  • Joint Military Exercise KAZIND-2019 between India and Kazakhstan will be conducted at Pithoragarh from 02 to 15 October 2019.
  • The exercise will comprise of nearly 100 soldiers from both Indian and Kazakhstan Army who would be sharing their experience gained during conduct of various counter insurgency and counter terrorism operations in the past
  • Exercise KAZIND-2019 is the fourth edition of an annual event which is conducted alternatively in Kazakhstan and India.
  • The joint military exercise will enhance the level of defence cooperation further fostering bilateral relations between the two nations

India rises 4 places to 44th rank in world digital competitiveness rankings

  • India has advanced four places to 44th position in terms of digital competitiveness in the world as the country has made improvement in terms of knowledge and future readiness to adopt and explore digital technologies
  • India rose from 48th place in 2018 to 44th rank this year as the country has improved overall in all factors — knowledge, technology and future readiness — as compared to the previous year’s ranking.
  • The US was ranked as the world’s most digitally competitive economy, followed by Singapore in the second place. Sweden was ranked third on the list, followed by Denmark and Switzerland in the 4th and 5th place, respectively.
  • Others in the list of top-10 most digitally competitive economy include Netherlands in the 6th place, Finland (7th), Hong Kong SAR (8th), Norway (9th) and Republic of Korea (10th).

  • The Indian duo of PankajAdvani and Aditya Mehta has won the IBSF World Snooker Team title at Mandalay, Myanmar.
  • The Indian pair beat Thailand’s team comprising C.Pongsakorn and D.Poramin in the final.
  • This takes Advani’s world title tally to a phenomenal 23 while Aditya claimed his maiden title.

  • DilipDutta former Professor of Mathematics, University of Rhode Island passed away at his Rhode Island residence in the United States of America.
  • Dutta has written more than 15 Assamese books including Dr. BhupenHazarikarGeetaruJibonRath, PhaliLuaBiranji, Mur Sikkhaaru Mur Sikhhak, Miss Gauhati (Novel), Monemurkoinabisare, which was converted into a movie, and many books on Mathematics.
