Power Min forms dispute resolution committee for clean energy projects

  • Union Power Minister R K Singh approved setting up a three-member resolution committee to resolve unforeseen disputes in clean energy projects.
  • The three members are M F Farooqui (former DoT secretary/heavy industry secretary), Anil Swarup (former coal secretary/school education secretary) and A K Dubey (former sports secretary).
  • The committee will address disputes between the solar/wind power developers and the Solar Energy Corporation of India/NTPC.

RBI opens third office of Ombudsman in New Delhi

  • The Reserve Bank has opened third office of the Banking Ombudsman and Ombudsman for Digital Transactions (ODT) at its New Delhi office.
  • While announcing the ODT in December last year, RBI had said that there was an emerging need for a dedicated, cost-free and expeditious grievance redressal mechanism as the digital mode for financial transactions was gaining traction in the country.
  • The Banking Ombudsman scheme is an expeditious and inexpensive forum for bank customers for resolution of complaints relating to certain services rendered by banks.
  • The scheme is introduced under Section 35 A of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 by RBI with effect from 1995.

RBI develops portal FLAIR for reporting of Foreign Liabilities and Assets (FLA)

  • TheReserve Bank of India has developed a portal Foreign Liabilities and Assets Information Reporting (FLAIR) system(https://flair.rbi.org.in) for Indian companies to report the Foreign Liabilities and Assets (FLA).
  • RBI mandates that all Indian companies which have received FDI and/or made FDI abroad (i.e. overseas investment) in the previous year(s) including the current year, should file the annual return on Foreign Liabilities and Assets (FLA). Earlier this was reported via e-mail to RBI.
  • Now the reporting will be done by companies via the FLAIR portal of RBI. The reporting is done on July 15th of each year.

Cryptocurrency exchange Koinex shuts down in India

  • India’s Largest cryptocurrency exchange,Koinex(Mumbai) terminating its digital asset trading services and other crypto-related operations citing regulatory uncertainty and disruption.
  • It was facing problems with its payment services and gateways, along with non-crypto related transactions like payment of salaries, rent, and purchase of equipment.

BYPL to launch energy saving app, to begin project from MayurVihar

  • Power distribution company BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) has tied up with several private organisations to launch a slew of initiatives including a ‘behavioural energy saving app’ to reduce electricity consumption.
  • The app — Susthome — developed by BYPL and TERI to bring about a behavioural change in how consumers use electricity, will track energy consumption patterns.
  • The app will guide enlisted consumers in reducing their energy consumption, carbon footprint and electricity bills by influencing their behavioural patterns. It will also provide customized solutions to make all such units energy-efficient.

China tests latest submarine-launched ballistic missile

  • China has successfully tested its latest submarine-launched ballistic missile, the JL-3.
  • The SLBM might have a range of up to 14,000 kms and be equipped with 10 independent guided nuclear warheads

Indian woman crowned Miss Universe Australia

  • India born PriyaSerrao, whose family migrated to Australia from Middle East, has won the Miss Universe Australia title for 2019.
  • A law graduate who currently works in Department of Jobs, Precincts and regions in Melbourne, Serrao was born in India. Her family later moved to Oman and Dubai before finally settling in Australia.

IIT Kanpur honours Gopichand with honorary doctorate

  • India’s chief national badminton coach PullelaGopichand was bestowed upon an honorary doctorate by IIT Kanpur on the occasion of their 52nd convocation.
  • The received the honour from former ISRO chairman and Chairman of board of Governors of IIT Kanpur, Prof K Radhakrishnan.
  • Former President APJ Abdul Kalam and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh are past recipients of the honour.

World Youth Conference on kindness held in New Delhi

  • P Jindal Global University (JGU) and Delhi-based UNESCO MGIEP (Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development) will jointly organise the first World Youth Conference on kindness from August 20-23 to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • JGU will host 100 youth leaders from across the world for the three-day conference on its campus in Sonipat while a part of the conference will also be held in Delhi. The university will also organise lectures by experts on the sidelines of the conference during that period.
  • The World Youth Congress 2019 is being organised on the theme ‘VasudhaivaKutumbakam: Gandhi for the Contemporary World: Celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.’
  • The conference will culminate at New Delhi’s VigyanBhawan with panels comprising Nobel laureates, international experts and policy makers and also representatives of youth leaders.

Conclave on ‘Transforming North East India through Science and Technology’ beings in Meghalaya

  • In Meghalaya, a two-day North East Conclave 2019 on ‘Transforming North East India through Science and Technology’ began today at Shillong. It has been organised by the Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Development (IBSD).
  • The initiative of the IBSD for organizing this conclave where leading experts and policymakers from different parts of the country along with local stakeholders come together to discuss on transforming North East India through Science and Technology.

Ahmedabad, Kobe exchange LoI for sister city partnership

  • Authorities from the Japanese city of Kobe exchanged a Letter of Intent (LoI) with their counterparts in Ahmedabad for a sister city partnership, which will pave the way for an enhanced economic relationship between the two vibrant cities as well as the two countries.
  • The MoU will pave the way for an enhanced economic relationship between the two vibrant cities as well as the two countries.

Ministry of Shipping and IIT Kharagpur signed an MoU to set up CICMT

  • A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed between Ministry of Shipping and IIT (Indian Institute of Technology), Kharagpur to set up Centre for Inland & Coastal Maritime Technology (CICMT) at IIT Kharagpur. CICMT is the first of its kind centre in India with the focus on indigenisation of ship designing, building and testing.
  • The MoA was signed by IIT Kharagpur Director, Professor Partha P Chakraborty, and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Shipping, Kailash Kumar Aggarwal in the presence of Shipping Minister Mansukh L Mandaviya in New Delhi.
  • The cost of the project is Rs.69.20 crore and it is funded under Sagarmala programme. The funding for the project is for 5 years after which revenues generated from the end users will be used.
  • At present, 4 European countries namely Germany, the Netherlands, Russia and Belgium have model testing facilities for ships.

Mumbai among top 20 most expensive cities in Asia for expatriates

  • Mumbai is India’s most expensive city and among the top 20 costliest cities surveyed in Asia for expatriates, with residential housing prices among the highest in the world, according to a survey by global consulting leader Mercer.
  • According to Mercer’s 25th Annual Cost of Living Survey, Mumbai fell 12 spots and was ranked at the 67th position out of the 209 cities surveyed.
  • Other Indian cities in the list include New Delhi at 118th place, Chennai (154), Bengaluru (179) and Kolkata (189). All four have dropped in ranking from last year.

Maharashtra ranks on top with 3,661 startups, Karnataka follows

  • Maharashtra ranks on top with 3,661 startups recognised by the government followed by Karnataka with 2,847, New Delhi with 2,552 and Uttar Pradesh by 1,566.
  • A total of 19,351 startups across the country have been recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

Freedom fighter Mohammed Baji passes away

  • Eminent freedom fighter Mohammed Bajipassed away.
  • He was 103.
  • After the freedom struggle, Baji was active in the Sarvodaya movement. He was the chairman of Utkal Gandhi SmarakNidhi and a close associate of UtkalSarvodayaMandal.
