National Statistics Day

  • The Government of India celebratesStatistics Day on June 29 every year to popularize the use of Statistics in everyday life and sensitize the public as to how Statistics helps in shaping and framing policies.
  • The day marks the birth anniversary of Indian scientist Prof. P C Mahalanobis, in recognition of his invaluable contribution in establishing the National Statistical System.

World Asteroid Day

  • Asteroid Day is an event observed on 30 June to provide online education about asteroid. This event is held on the anniversary of the Siberian Tunguska event that took place on 30 June, 1908
  • It is a most harmful known asteroid related event on Earth in recent history. The United Nations passed a resolution for celebrating 30 June as Asteroid Day.

International Day of Parliamentarism

  • TheUnited Nations International Day of Parliamentarism is held on June 30 to celebrate parliaments and the ways in which parliamentary systems of government improve the day-to-day lives of people the world over.
  • The 2019 event is the second edition of the celebration.
  • It also marks the anniversary of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the global organization of parliaments, that was established on June 30, 1889.

Smt. Renuka Singh to Launch ‘Go Tribal Campaign’ by Tribes India

  • Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Smt. Renuka Singh will launch the “Go Tribal Campaign” by Tribes India at an event.
  • TRIFED has organized this event to institutionalize collaborations and partnerships with different organizations to promote tribal products. The event will cover the following :
  • “Go Tribals Campaign by Tribes India” will be launched under which a number of innovative activities have been planned to be undertaken to promote use of tribal handicrafts, handicrafts and natural products.
  • Global Launch of “Tribes India” through Amazon Global Selling, under which Tribes India and Amazon Global Marketing will launch TRIBES India products globally through Amazon.com. With this collaboration, tribal products shall be available in the US and will help establish export market with tribal products.
  • Collaboration of Tribes India with Central Silk Board for development, promotion, marketing of tribal silk products and empowerment of tribal  weavers.
  • TRIFED joins the 150thbirth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi by introducing Khadi Kurtas and Jackets to its products range in association with “I Am Khadi” foundation.

‘One nation one ration card’ scheme from July 1, 2020

  • ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ scheme, which will allow portability of food security benefits, will be available across the country from July 1, 2020.
  • This means poor migrant workers will be able to buy subsidised rice and wheat from any ration shop in the country, so long as their ration cards are linked to Aadhaar.
  • All the States have been given one more year to use point of sale (PoS) machines in the ration shops and implement the scheme.
  • Already, 77% % of the ration shops across the country have PoS machines and more than 85% of people covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) have their cards linked to Aadhaar

Government reduces interest rates of Small Saving Schemes by 10 bps

  • The Finance Ministry said that interest rates for small savings schemes will be reduced by 10 basis points for July-September quarter of the ongoing financial year. Schemes that will fetch lower interest are Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP), Public Providend Fund (PPF), among others, barring interest on savings deposits that has been retained at 4%.
  • PPF and National Savings Certificate (NSC) will yield 7.9% annual interest from the earlier 8%. KVP will fetch 7.6% with maturity of 113 months as compared with 7.7% with maturity of 112 months.
  • The girl child savings scheme Sukanya Samriddhi Account will fetch a lower return of 8.4% as compared with 8.5%. Similarly, term deposits of 1-3 years will fetch interest rate of 6.9%, to be paid quarterly, while the five-year quarterly pegged at 7.7% and for recurring 7.2% from existing rate of 7.3%.

RBI relaxes leverage ratio for banks to boost their lending capacity

  • The Reserve Bank relaxed the leverage ratio (LR) for banks to help them boost their lending activities.
  • The leverage ratio stands reduced to 4 per cent for Domestic Systemically Important Banks (DSIBs) and 3.5 per cent for other banks effective from the quarter commencing October 1, 2019.
  • The leverage ratio, as defined under Basel-III norms, is Tier-I capital as a percentage of the bank’s exposures. The framework is designed to capture leverage associated with both on- and off-balance sheet exposures.

Airtel becomes first telco to shut down 3G network

  • Bharti Airtel switched off its 3G network in Kolkata and has refarmed the 900 MHz band spectrum to further strengthen its 4G network. This is one of the first phase-outs of 3G technology globally.
  • Airtel mobile broadband services in the city will now be available on high-speed 4G.
  • The telco is deploying state-of-the-art L900 technology in the 900 MHz band to complement its 4G services in the 2300 Mhz and 1800 Mhz bands.

NALCO to get President’s award for excellent CSR in social development

  • Odisha-based Navaratna Company NALCO has been selected for President’s award for utilisation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund in social development.
  • To promote the education of Girls of BPL families, NAVARATNA Company NALCO has started “Aliali Jhia” a new scheme on the line of BETI BACHAO BETI PADHAO” from 2015. Under this scheme, 416  girls from BPL families of 66 villages of Anugul, Damanjodi and Potangi area in Anugul and Koraput district.s have been adopted by Company.
  • These girls are reading in 45 different schools. Under this scheme. The Company is bearing all the expenditure for education and promotion of talent from 8th to 10th class. The employees of the company have now joined the scheme.

Mark Tully Gets Lifetime Achievement Award For Role In UK-India Ties

  • Veteran British journalist Sir Mark Tully was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award in London for his contributions to the UK-India relationship.
  • Tully, who has been previously knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in the UK and conferred with the Padma Bhushan in India.
  • While British Indian actor Kunal Nayyar – best known for his role as Rajesh Koothrappali on the US sitcom The Big Bang Theory – was named Global Indian Icon of the Year, Indian-origin peer and Cobra Beer founder Lord Karan Bilimoria was presented with a special Significant Contribution to UK-India Relations Award.

Abu Dhabi to host first ISA’s joint security exercise ISALEX19

  • Thefirst edition of the joint security exercise of International Security Alliance (ISA) named ISALEX19 kicked off in Abu Dhabi, UAE on June 30, 2019 to test the readiness of the different teams and to evaluate the tools, strategies and procedures developed jointly between member countries.
  • The International Security Alliance was launched in Abu Dhabi in 2017
  • The alliance now comprises nine countries, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, France, Italy, Spain, Senegal, Singapore, and the Slovak Republic.

India, Indonesia set USD 50 billion trade target by 2025

  • India and Indonesia set an ambitious USD 50 billion target for bilateral trade over the next six years as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joko Widodo discussed ways to deepen cooperation in a number of key areas including economy, defence and maritime security.
  • The two leaders, who are in Osaka, Japan for the G20 Summit, met in the morning and discussed ways to boost bilateral ties and enhance cooperation in trade and investment.
  • According to Ministry of External Affairs, India and Indonesia set a USD 50 billion target for bilateral trade by 2025.

India signs Rs 200-crore deal with Russia to acquire ‘Strum Ataka’ anti-tank missile for its fleet of Mi-35 attack choppers

  • India has signed a deal to acquire ‘Strum Ataka’ anti-tank missile from Russia for its fleet of Mi-35 attack choppers.
  • The deal for the missiles is worth around Rs 200 crore and would give an added capability to the Mi-35 attack choppers to take out enemy tanks and other armoured elements.
  • The Mi-35s are the existing attack choppers of the Indian Air Force and are set to be replaced with the Apache gunships being acquired from the US and slated to be delivered from next month onwards.
  • India has been trying to acquire the Russian missiles for a long time but the deal has been signed under the emergency provisions after more than a decade.

Money parked in Swiss banks: India slips one place to 74th, UK remains on top

  • India has moved down one place to 74th rank in terms of money parked by its citizens and enterprises with Swiss banks, while the UK has retained its top position, as per data released by the central banking authority of the Alpine nation.
  • India was ranked 73rd last year, after jumping 15 places from its 88th position a year ago.

  • A Book titled‘A Prime Minister to Remember: Memories of a Military Chief’ was released on June 28, 2019.
  • The book has been written byAdmiral Sushil Kumar and speaks about the huge impact that the late Prime Minister Vajpayee had on the Armed Forces of India.
  • Author Sushil Kumar was the Chief of the Indian Navy during the Kargil War and Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee when Operation Parakram was launched following the terror attack on the Indian Parliament.

  • World number three Karolina Pliskova cruised to her second Eastbourne International title with a 6-1, 6-4 destruction of Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber.
  • Taylor Fritz finally earned his maiden triumph, defeating compatriot Sam Querrey 6-3, 6-4 in 61 minutes to win the Nature Valley International in Eastbourne.

Max Verstappen wins AustrianGrand Prix

  • Red Bulls’ Max Verstappen overtook Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc with three laps remaining to win his second consecutive race at the Spielberg circuit. This is Verstappen’s sixth career win
  • Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas came home third ahead of Sebastian Vettel in the second Ferrari and defending five-time champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Mercedes

Veer wins U-19 Asian Squash title

  • Veer Chotrani won the Asian junior Individual squash championship in the U-19 category with a win over Yash Fadte in an all-India final in Macau
  • Veer is now the third Indian to win this prestigious title after Ravi Dixit and Velavan Senthilkumar
  • In the other two finals, India bagged two silver medals through Neel Joshi in the boys Under-17 category and Yuvna Gupta in the girls Under-15 section

Noted Telugu writer Abburi Chaya Devi passes away

  • Famous Telugu writer Abburi Chaya Devi, a recipient of Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award in 2005. She was 86.
  • Chaya Devi, who highlighted the cause of women in her writings, received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2005 for her book ‘Thana Margam.’
