International Animation Day

- World Thrift Day is observed on 30 October every year in India and in worldwide it is observed on 31st October.

Yogi Adityanath launches Mukhya MantriKanya Sumangala Yojana on Dhanteras
- On the occasion of Dhanteras, Mukhya Mantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana was launched in Uttar Pradesh by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
- The programme aims at empowering the girl child for which an amount of 15 thousand rupees will be provided to every family in which a girl child takes birth.
- Under the scheme, the state government will direct transfer funds in the account of the registered girls in a phased manner when a girl child will complete various achievements, like vaccination, admission in class 1, 5 and 9, graduation.
- Yogi also launched the Kanya Sumangala web portal and gave away certificates and symbolic cheques to some beneficiaries.

Kerala tourism to be differently-abled friendly by 2021
- Tourist destinations in Kerala are all set to go “differently-abled friendly” by 2021.
- A host of facilities, including special parking areas and toilet facilities will be made available for the differently-empowered tourists to enjoy barrier-free holidaying in the State.
- A total of 120 tourist spots had been identified across the State in the first phase to implement the project.
- Of them, 98 destinations have already been made completely differently-abled friendly.

- Birender Singh Yadav has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Iraq
- A 1997-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Yadav is expected to take up the assignment shortly
- Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)also announced the appointment of Muktesh Kumar Pardeshi as India’s next High Commissioner to Samoa.
- Pardeshi, who is already serving as the Ambassador to New Zealand, will concurrently work as the next High Commissioner to Samoa, with residence in Wellington.He is a 1991-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer.

New history created in Ayodhya as over six lakh diyas light up Sarayu’s banks
- A new history was created at Ayodhya as a record 6 lakh earthen lamps lit up the Sarayu river bank on the eve of Diwali, days ahead of the Supreme Court verdict on the title suit over the disputed Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid land.
- The banks of Sarayu in the temple town Ayodhya were lit up with the sparkling light of lakhs of earthen lamps as people from different walks of life took part in the grand programme and lighted ‘diyas’ to cherish the moment.
- Last year’s record was of three lakh one thousand one hundred eighty six ‘diyaas’ at the ghat. This time, it was 4 lakh 10 thousand ‘diyaas’ lit at the ghat.
President Kovind confers first National Corporate Social Responsibility Awards
- President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the first National Corporate Social Responsibility Awards to the companies for their outstanding contribution in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
- It is important to internalize social welfare in the corporate culture and the companies have shown that it is possible to be profitable while being socially and environmentally responsible.
- Commending the efforts of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs for initiating the National CSR Awards in the year of Gandhiji’s 150th birth anniversary, these awards will be conferred every year on 2nd October.
Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja claims new speed record for world’s 14 highest peaks
- A Nepali mountaineer on Tuesday smashed the record for summiting the world’s 14 highest peaks, racing up all “8000 meters” in just seven months.
- Nirmal Purja completed the climb of the 14 mountains, all over 8,000 metres (26,250 feet) in seven months.
- The 36-year-old Purja, a former member of the Gurkhas — a unit of Nepalis recruited into the British army — as well as the elite Special Boat Service, kicked off his ambitious “Project Possible” in April.
- In the first part of his record attempt, Purja climbed Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Kanchenjunga, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu — among the highest of the “8000ers” — in just one month.

Three Indian-origin CEOs in Harvard Business Review’s top 10 best-performing CEOs
- Three Indian-origin CEOs, Shantanu Narayen, Ajay Banga and Satya Nadella are among the world’s top 10 best-performing chief executives, featured in a list complied by the Harvard Business Review (HBR).
- ‘The Best-Performing CEOs in the World, 2019’ list by the HBR features 100 CEOs and has been topped by American technology company NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang.
- On the 6th spot is Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, followed by MasterCard CEO Ajay Banga, ranked 7th and Microsoft chief Satya Nadella on the 9th spot.
- The list also features India-born CEO of DBS Bank Piyush Gupta on the 89th spot. Apple CEO Tim Cook is ranked 62nd.
- The HBR took into account three metrics for each CEO’s tenure – the total shareholder return (including dividends reinvested) adjusted by country and by industry and change in market capitalisation (adjusted for dividends, share issues, and share repurchases), measured in inflation-adjusted USD.

New Book by Man Booker Prize Shortlisted Author Romesh Gunesekera to Hit Stands in November
- Man Booker Prize shortlisted Sri Lankan author Romesh Gunesekera’s new novel Suncatcher is a poignant coming-of-age story about difficult friendships and sudden awakenings.
- The book is expected to hit the stands in November.
- Gunesekera is the author of eight works of fiction, which have been translated into multiple languages. Recipient of many awards, including a Premio Mondello in Italy, he was shortlisted for the Man Booker prize in 1994 for “reef”.
- His last book Noontide Toll captured a vital moment in post-war Sri Lanka.

Philippine Army Plans To Buy India’s BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile To Strengthen Its Coastal Security
- BrahMos missile is regarded as one of the world’s fastest supersonic missiles and the Philippine Army is interested in acquiring the Indian-manufactured weapons system, in order to strengthen its coastal defences.
- Philippines is very much interested in the possible acquisition of the BrahMos missile, which can be launched from all four platforms (ship, a plane, submarine, or on land).
- Philippine Army wants BrahMos missile as its First Land-Based Missile System Battery (1LBMS).

MIT researchers developed a new technology to remove carbon dioxide from air
- Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US have developed a new technology to capture carbon dioxide from a stream of air, virtually at any concentration level
- Most methods of removing carbon dioxide from a stream of gas required higher concentrations. the new method could suck out the gas even when it was present in very low concentrations.
- The new method required significantly energy, and could even suck out the greenhouse gas at the roughly 400 parts per million currently found in the atmosphere.
- In a study, published in the journal Energy and Environmental Science, the researchers described the device as a large, specialized battery with a stack of electrodes that absorbs carbon dioxide from the air passing over its surface as it was being charged up, and then released the gas as it was being discharged.

ICC bans Bangladeshi cricketer Shakib Al Hasanfrom all cricket for two years
- Bangladesh Test and T20 Captain Shakib Al Hasanhas been banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) from all cricket for two years. One year of the punishment has been suspended after he accepted three charges of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.
- Shakib will be free to resume international cricket from 29th of October next year subject to him satisfying the conditions in respect of the suspended part of the sanction.
Tiger Woods claims historic 82nd title with Zozo Championship victory
- Tiger Woods secured a record-equalling 82nd PGA Tour crown after he won the Zozo Championship in Japan
- Woods sealed a historic three-stroke win to draw level with Sam Snead for the most victories on Tour.
- Woods carded a three-under-par 67 to finish 19 under overall, ahead of Hideki Matsuyama (67) at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club.
