World No Tobacco Day
- Every year, on 31 May, the World Health Organization (WHO) and global partners celebrate World No Tobacco Day (WNTD).
- The annual campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure, and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form.
- The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2019 is on “tobacco and lung health.”

Jammu and Kashmir Government Unveils Healthcare Investment Policy-2019
- Jammu and Kashmir Government unveiled Healthcare Investment Policy-2019.
- This follows the State Administrative Council decision taken in this regard on March 08, 2019.
- As per the new Health Care Investment Policy, the Government of Jammu & Kashmir will promote and encourage the private parties and entrepreneurs for setting up healthcare infrastructure in the state by providing subsidies and incentives
- Accordingly, 30% subsidy on capital investment will be provided for setting up of multi-speciality Hospitals, Super Specialty Hospitals, Medical Colleges, Nursing Colleges and Paramedical Colleges.
- Interest subsidy shall be provided @ 5% per annum on term loan subject to a ceiling of Rs. 15 lakh per year for a period of five years from the date of operationalization of the project.
- Also, the subsidized power tariff rates shall apply as applicable to Industries Sector. 100 % subsidy on purchase and installation of DG sets with an upper ceiling of Rs. 45 lakh.

RBI sets up panel to develop secondary market for corporate loans
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has constituted a six-member committee on the Development of Secondary Market for Corporate Loans to come up with recommendations to increase the efficiencies of the debt market and aid in the resolution of stressed assets
- The six-member body, headed by Canara Bank Chairman T N Manoharan, has been set up to review the existing state of the market for loan sale/transfer in India as well as the international experience in loan trading

FICCI survey forecasts India’s GDP growth at 7.1% for FY20
- The country’s median GDP is forecast at 7.1 per cent for FY20 and 7.2 per cent for FY 21.
- The industry body FICCI’s economic outlook survey stated that the minimum and maximum growth estimate stood at 6.8 per cent and 7.3 per cent, for 2019-20.
- The survey was conducted in May 2019 among economists belonging to the industry, banking and financial services sectors.
- Inflation is expected to remain moderate and the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation rate is projected at 3.1 per cent in 2019-20, while, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation has a median forecast of 4 per cent for 2019-20.

RBI sets up committee for development of housing finance securitisation market
- The Reserve Bank of India has constituted a six-member committee on Development of Housing Finance Securitisation Market.
- The committee, headed by Harsh Vardhan, Senior Advisor, Bain & Co, will review the regulations relating to mortgage-backed securitisation (MBS) currently in place, and make specific recommendations on suitably aligning the same with international norms
- The committee will review the existing state of mortgage securitisation in India and various issues constraining market development, and to develop the market further
- The committee will submit its report by the end of August 2019

Military tribunal allows Karambir Singh to take charge as new Navy Chief
- The Armed Forces Tribunal cleared the way for Vice Admiral Karambir Singh to become the next Navy Chief, while it deferred for four weeks the matter of Vice Admiral Bimal Verma which seeks to quash Singh’s appointment
- Vice Admiral Singh, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam
- Singh will be the first helicopter pilot to become chief of Naval Staff.
Narendra Modi takes oath as PM for second term
- National Democratic Alliance leader Narendra Modi was sworn in as Prime Minister for the second consecutive term
- President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of Office and Secrecy to him and a team of 57 ministers at a glittering ceremony on the forecourts of the Rashtrapati Bhawan
- Besides 24 Cabinet ministers including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman, Nitin Gadkari, Smriti Irani, and Piyush Goyal, nine were sworn in as Minister of State with Independent charge and another 24 as Minister of State.
- One-third of the total ministers in the Cabinet are first-timers, Â including BJP president Amit Shah and former Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. Two former Chief Ministers – Ramesh Pokhriyal from Uttarakhand and Arjun Munda from Jharkhand – have taken oath as Union ministers for the first time.

James Marape elected as new Papua New Guinea prime minister
- James Marape, a former finance minister and critic of a major global gas development deal, has been elected by parliament as the prime minister of Papua New Guinea (PNG)
- His election came after weeks of political turmoil that saw his predecessor, Peter O’Neill, resign having lost the support of the House after more than seven years in power.

Vice Admiral Atul Kumar Jain takes over as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command
- Vice Admiral Atul Kumar Jain, AVSM, VSM took over as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C), Eastern Naval Command (ENC) succeeding Vice Admiral Karambir Singh
- The outgoing FOC-in-C, Vice Admiral Karambir Singh, will assume the charge as the 24th Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS)

India concludes best ever ISSF WC performance in Munich
- In Shooting, India produced their best ever show at the ISSF World Cup with a total tally of five gold medals in Munich, Germany.
- India topped the medals tally with five golds and a silver. Second-placed China bagged nine medals – two gold, two silver and five bronze medals
- India gold medallists included Apurvi Chandela in the Women’s 10 metre Air Rifle, Rahi Sarnobat in the Women’s 25m Pistol and Saurabh Chaudhary in the men’s 10m Air Pistol
- The pair of Anjum Moudgil and Divyansh Singh Panwar first won the 10m Air Rifle mixed team gold. Teenage pair of Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary backed them up with the 10m Air Pistol mixed team title.
- in the Mixed Air Rifle, it was an all India gold medal match and Apurvi Chandela and Deepak Kumar landed the country its lone silver
- Manu and Saurabh, in the Air Pistol finals, found it a bit tough against the experienced Ukranian pair of Olena Kostevych and Oleh Omelchuk but they won 17-9 in the end.

Godfather actor Carmine Caridi passed away
- Carmine Caridi, known for roles in The Godfather franchise, has passed away
- Caridi first appeared in the Godfather franchise in 1974, when he played Carmine Rosato in The Godfather Part II.
- He returned in 1990 as Albert Volpe in The Godfather Part III.
- In 2004, Caridi became the first person to be expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
India’s Only Orangutan Binny passed away in Odisha Zoo
- A 41-year-old orangutan at Odisha’s Nandankanan Zoological Park, named ‘Binny”, has passed away
- ”Binny”, the country’s lone orangutan, was brought to Nandankanan Zoo from Pune’s Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park on November 20, 2003, when she was 25.
- Orangutans are one of the world”s three extant species of great apes and are native to Indonesia and Malaysia. Orangutans are currently found only in the rain forests of Borneo and Sumatra.
- Considered to be among the most intelligent primates, orangutans can live up to 45 years in the wild and even more in zoos
