International Mango Festival Is Back With 500 Varieties Of Mangoes in Delhi

  • The International Mango Festival has returned this year with over 500 varieties of mangoes for all the mango lovers. The festival, that began in the year 1988, will be held on 9th and 10th July 2018 at Dilli Haat in Janakpuri.

Semi high speed train named ‘Train 18’ built by India’s Integral Coach Factory

  • India’s much-awaited indigenously manufactured semi high-speed train called “Train 2018”, code-named Train 18, is expected to be rolled out in September. It is built by Integral Coach Factory (ICF) of Chennai to promote Make in India, and is capable of running at a speed of 160 km per hour.

National Human Rights Commission announced winners of its silver jubilee logo, slogan tagline contests

  • Bansi Lal Ketki from Mumbai in Maharashtra won the first prize of Rs 50,000 along with a certificate in the logo design contest. His design artistically adds the numerals ’25’ to the existing logo of the NHRC, using the theme of the tricolour. Tabrej Qureshi from Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh has bagged the top prize in the slogan/tagline contest. His tagline entry was: ‘Awaaz Aapke Adhikar Ki’ and slogan — ‘Desh may vikas ki aayge bahar, jab hoga surakshit manav adhikar. The NHRC was established on October 12, 1993, under the Protection of the Human Rights (PHR) Act, 1993.

Narendra Modi to inaugurate the ‘Statue of Unity’ on 31st October

  • The Statue of Unity, being built near the Sardar Sarovar dam on the Narmada river, at a cost of Rs 2,989, in memory of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. On 31st October, the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the “Statue of Unity”, the tallest statue in the world.

JEE Main, NEET to be held twice a year from 2019

  • HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar announced that the national-level Engineering Entrance Test (JEE Main) and medical entrance examinations (NEET) will be held twice a year from 2019. National Testing Agency will conduct these exams in online mode. Students will have the choice to attempt both or one, the best score will be taken into account while giving admission.

Studies found alternate cereals can save water

  • According to the analysis of U.S. based Earth Institute, Columbia University and Indian School of Business, if alternative cereals such as maize, sorghum, and millet are used instead of rice and wheat, the demand for irrigation water can be reduced by 33%. It could also improve nutrient availability to consumers. India is mandated to provide 5 kg of foodgrains per person per month at subsidized prices of Rs.3/2/1 per kg for rice/wheat/coarse grains.

Blind Cheetah 3 robot designed by MIT can navigate obstacles climb stairs

  • Researchers from MIT have designed a four-legged robot called Cheetah 3 that can run, jump onto desks, and climb obstacle-laden stairs without visual sensors. The 40kg robot has been developed with two new algorithms to provide the robot with ‘blind locomotion’ capabilities.

UK town to be Amritsar’s twin city to honour last Sikh king

  • A small town Thetford of England will be converted into a twin city of Amritsar in the memory of the last king of the Sikh Empire, Maharaja Duleep Singh. The city celebrates the 125th death anniversary of Maharaja Duleep Singh with a two-week-long Punjabi festival.

UP government to ask non performing employees aged above 50yrs to retire

  • The screening test is now mandatory for all government employees in Uttar Pradesh who have crossed the age of 50 years. A government employee above the age of 50 can be retired compulsorily after a three-month notice, if they are found negligent in conducting their duty.

Himachal Pradesh banned use of thermocol cutlery:

  • Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur had announced the ban on the World Environment Day on June 5, but it was observed that it was still in use. The Himachal Pradesh government recently issued fresh notification banning use of thermocol cutlery including cups, plates, glasses, spoons or any other item in the state. The state government has set a deadline of three months for manufacturers to dispose of their stocks

PM Modi inaugurated 13 projects worth Rs. 2,100 crore in Rajasthan

  • He inaugurated Integrated Structural Planning in Udaipur and schemes for Ajmer, Ajmer, Bhilwara, Bikaner, Hanumangarh, Sikar and Mount Abu. Around 4.5 crore people of Rajasthan have benefitted from around 160 government schemes.

MoEFCC declared the area around Mudumalai as an ESZ

  • The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) declared 438 sq.km. of the area around the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in the Nilgiris as an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ). This is to prohibit construction and commercial mining activities and restrict hotels and resorts near the reserve.

Government taps RBI to track all financial transactions:

  • In a move aimed at widening the crackdown on black money and following the money trail flowing in and out of thousands of shell companies, the Centre is planning to set up an information technology (IT)-based mechanism to keep a tab on all non-cash, financial transactions in the country.

HDFC Bank most valuable bank in the emerging market outside China

  • There are four lenders from India that now rank among the world’s 500 most valuable companies. HDFC Bank is followed by its housing finance cousin Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), Kotak Mahindra Bank and State Bank of India.
  • HDFC Bank has gone past Russia’s Sberbank to become the most valuable bank in the emerging market outside China. HDFC Bank’s current market capitalisation is $78.4 billion against Sberbank’s $74.4 billion. Industrial & Commercial Bank of China topping the list with a market cap of $273.4 billion, followed by China Construction Bank ($225.1 billion).

Reliance Industries becomes India’s largest taxpayer in the private sector

  • Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Industries limited (RIL) is India’s largest payer of Goods and Services Tax (GST), Excise and Customs Duty, and Income Tax in the private sector. RIL’s consolidated net profit for the fourth-quarter (January-March) of fiscal 2017-18 stood at Rs. 9,435 crore, up by 17.3 per cent on a year-on-year basis.

  • Michael Ondaatje’s “The English Patient” was named the greatest-ever winner of the Man Booker Prize at an event Sunday celebrating five decades of the prestigious literary award.

  • Tapan Kumar Chand, CMD, NALCO, called upon industry leaders, policy makers and stakeholders in the Aluminium value chain to scale up production of the ‘wonder metal’ to meet the rising demand as consumption of Aluminium is poised to reach 10 million tons in the next decade.

Manoj Kumar Pingua is appointed as MD of NFDC

  • Manoj Kumar Pingua, a joint secretary of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is appointed as the acting Manager of National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). The previous Managing Director of NFDC is Nina Lath Gupta.

BSNL unveiled internet telephony service ‘Wings’

  • Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) will roll out its new internet telephony service with brand name “Wings” from August 1. Those subscribing to “Wings”, entailing one-time registration fee of Rs 1,099, will be able to make calls using any internet connection including broadband, WiFi, 3G or 4G data network of any operator, thus overcoming connectivity problems even in areas having patchy signals. Those subscribers can avail free domestic calls for one year, while the overseas calls will be priced as per international tariffs of BSNL landline.

CBIC launched GST ‘Verify App’

  • Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has launched a mobile app ‘GST Verify’ developed by B Raghu Kiran, joint commissioner GST Hyderabad. It is an android app to verify if the person collecting GST from the consumer is eligible to collect it or not.

  • Sebastian Vettel won a thrilling British Grand Prix which saw Lewis Hamilton come from the back of the grid to battle for second.

Dipa Karmakar wins gold in Gymnastics World Cup:

  • Returning to action after a long lay-off of nearly two years due to injury, India’s premier gymnast Dipa Karmakar clinched the gold medal in the vault event of FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup at Mersin

Indias Bajrang Punia won gold medal at Tbilisi Grand Prix, Deepak won bronze

  • Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia won the gold medal at Tbilisi Grand Prix in Georgia with a 9-3 win over Iran’s Mehran Akbar Nasiriafrachali in the 65kg category final. Deepak Punia won the bronze medal in the 86kg category by defeating Turkey’s Osman Gocen 5-3.

India’s Dalabehera Bags Bronze In Junior World Weightlifting

  • Indian lifter Jhilli Dalabehera has bagged the bronze medal in the 2018 IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championshipsat Tashkent. She lifted 167 kg in the 48 kg category to finish third on the podium.

Anju Khosla, Oldest Indian Woman To Complete Ironman Triathlon

  • At 52, Anju Khoslahas become the oldest Indian woman to complete an Ironman Triathlon – one of the toughest one-day sporting events. The New Delhi resident completed her first full Ironman Triathlon, in Carinthia, Austria, in 15 hours, 54 minutes and 54 seconds.
