World’s largest iceberg stuck near Antarctic island after 40-year journey

  • The world’s largest iceberg, A23a, calved from the Antarctic ice shelf in 1986 and remained grounded for over 30 years before breaking free in 2020.
  • Its recent journey north has been tracked via satellite, and as of March 1st, it is grounded 73km from South Georgia Island.
  • A 19km chunk broke off of it in January 2025.
  • Initial concerns existed that if the iceberg grounded too close to South Georgia, it would force penguins and seals to travel further for food, increasing mortality rates.
  • Because of the current location, the danger to wildlife has been reduced, and the grounded iceberg could provide benefits, as nutrients released from it may boost food availability for the regional ecosystem.
  • The area has already been impacted by a bird flu outbreak.
  • The iceberg poses no threat to shipping due to its massive size, which allows vessels to easily avoid it.
  • However, as it breaks into smaller pieces, “bergy bits” could create hazards for commercial fishing ships.
  • While large icebergs are a natural part of the Antarctic ice sheet’s lifecycle, the overall trend of ice loss is accelerating due to climate change.
  • Ice shelves have lost 6,000 billion tonnes of mass since 2000, and rising global temperatures pose a significant threat to ice sheets and sea levels.
  • Last year was the first year that the global average temperature exceeded 5C.
  • South Georgia Island is a crucial breeding ground for millions of seals and birds, and it is a British overseas territory, also claimed by Argentina.
