Indian Army’s White Tiger Division Proves Air Defence Readiness with OSA-AK Missile Firing Exercise
- On 30 March 2025, the Indian Army’s Air Defence warriors from the White Tiger Division demonstrated their operational readiness during a live missile-firing exercise at the Gopalpur Seawards Firing Ranges.
- The exercise involved the 9K33 Osa-AK missile system, achieving direct hits on all Maneuverable Expandable Aerial Targets (MEAT), showcasing the precision and discipline of the soldiers.
Key Highlights:
- The 9K33 Osa-AK, a Soviet-era, short-range, low-altitude surface-to-air missile system, remains a vital part of India’s air defence arsenal.
- Originally introduced in 1972, the system combines the radar and missile launcher in a single, highly mobile amphibious vehicle, capable of detecting, tracking, and engaging aerial threats independently.
- With a road range of around 500 km, it enables swift redeployment in varied terrain.
- The Corps of Army Air Defence (AAD), established in 1939 and bifurcated from the Regiment of Artillery in 1994, continues to play a key role in securing India’s airspace, especially against threats flying below 5,000 feet.
- The Army Air Defence College (AADC) trains personnel to maintain the highest standards, as reflected in the success of the recent exercise.
- Globally, the Osa-AK remains active in various combat zones.
- Both Russia and Ukraine have deployed versions of this system.
- Notably, in March 2019, Ukrainian forces claimed to have destroyed an Osa-AKM in Donbas.
- In December 2024, Ukraine revealed that some Osa systems were modified to launch air-to-air missiles, adapting to the evolving battlefield.
- The Indian Army’s successful demonstration at Gopalpur reinforces the system’s relevance and highlights the technical capability and preparedness of its forces.
- This commitment to continuous training and operational excellence is vital in today’s complex security landscape.
- Even as the Osa-AK is a legacy system, its effectiveness, mobility, and adaptability ensure it remains a cornerstone of India’s air defence strategy.

- The strategic base located near the small coastal village of Rambilli, about 50km south from the Eastern Naval Command headquarters at Visakhapatnam on the eastern seaboard, has underground pens and a network of tunnels to house nuclear submarines.
- This will enable the submarines to quietly slip into the Bay of Bengal without detection from spy satellites and quickly head towards the critical Malacca Strait and beyond on deterrent patrols.
- The first phase of the Rambilli base under Project Varsha is almost complete. After commissioning in 2026.
Key Highlights :

- Slightly bigger than the first two operational SSBNs, INS Arihant and INS Arighaat, INS Aridhaman will be able to carry more K-4 missiles with a strike range of 3,500km.
- While a fourth submarine is also under construction under the secretive over ₹90,000 crore advanced technology vessel (ATV) project, there is also the plan to eventually build 13,500-tonne SSBNs.
