Reserve Bank of India to Begin Redemption of 30 Gold Bonds on October 11, 2024   

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the calendar for the premature redemption of Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) issued between May 2017 and May 2020.
  • The RBI plans to redeem 30 tranches of these bonds between October 11, 2024, and February 7, 2025.

Key Highlights :

  • Redemption Process:The first redemption period begins on October 11, 2024, for SGBs issued on May 12, 2017.
  • This window will close on November 2, 2024, with the payout scheduled for November 12, 2024.
  • The redemption window will be open for 20 days, with the amount credited to the investor’s account 10 days after the redemption request.
  • The redemption price will be based on the average gold price of the last three days before maturity.
  • Premature Redemption Eligibility: Though SGBs have an 8-year maturity period, investors can apply for premature redemption after completing 5, 6, or 7 years.

What are Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs)?

  • SGBs are government securities denominated in grams of gold, and they are a substitute for holding physical gold.
  • The bonds are issued in denominations of one gram of gold and in multiples thereof.
  • Investment Limits: The minimum investment in SGBs is one gram of gold, with a maximum limit of 4 kg for individuals and 20 kg for trusts and similar entities per financial year.
  • Interest Rate: Sovereign gold bonds currently offer an interest rate of 2.5%, payable semi-annually.
  • Issuing Authority: These bonds are issued by the Government of India under the Government of India Stock, in accordance with Section 3 of the Government Securities Act, 2006 (GS Act 2006).

PhonePe Introduces Credit Line on UPI for Effortless Merchant Payments   

  • Walmart backed fintech firm PhonePe launched Credit Line on UPI on its platform to enable consumers availing credit lines from their banks to seamlessly link them to UPI on PhonePe for merchant payments.
  • The feature will enable consumers to purchase with ease across millions of merchants and avail the flexibility of short-term credit that helps them manage their monthly expenses better.
  • The initiative follows the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) decision to expand the UPI scope to include pre-approved credit lines, allowing users to access credit lines through their banks and use them via UPI apps.
  • This is the second major credit-related feature on UPI, following the success of Rupay Credit Cards being linked to UPI.
  • Merchants using the PhonePe Payment Gateway (PG) can integrate the credit line feature as a payment option at checkout, which may reduce cart abandonment and increase sales.
  • This feature will help exponentially increase the number of merchants where consumers can utilize credit lines, enhancing the reach and utility of credit usage on UPI platforms.

PayU Teams Up with Amazon Pay Later to Provide Instant Digital Credit for Indian Shoppers   

  • Naspers-backed fintech firm PayU has partnered with Amazon Pay Later to provide instant digital credit access to Indian shoppers.
  • As part of this partnership, Amazon Pay Later will be integrated into PayU’s checkout infrastructure, allowing online merchants to offer an instant credit line to their customers, thereby boosting business revenues.
  • This collaboration follows the recent in-principle approval PayU received from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to operate as a payment aggregator (PA), enabling the company to start onboarding new merchants onto its platform.
  • In addition to the integration, PayU will introduce the Amazon Pay Later service on its offers engine platform.
  • This plug-and-play platform by PayU allows merchants to create customised offers during checkout across various payment modes.
  • PayU reported an 11% increase in its India revenue, reaching $444 million in fiscal year 2024, up from $399 million the previous year. Payment services contributed 46% to its core revenue from this segment, accounting for 60% of total payment volumes (TPV).
  • Notably, Amazon is considering spinning off its payments arm, Amazon Pay, into a standalone app to compete with the likes of PhonePe and Google Pay.

Cabinet Approves Unified Pension Scheme (UPS)

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, approved the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS).
  1. The salient features of the UPS are: Assured Pension:
    • Eligibility: 25 years of service.
    • Benefit: 50% of the average basic pay drawn in the last 12 months before retirement.
    • For Lesser Service Periods: Proportionate pension for service between 10 to 25 years.
  2. Assured Family Pension:
    • Benefit: 60% of the employee’s pension before their death.
  3. Minimum Pension:
    • Amount: ₹10,000 per month.
    • Eligibility: Minimum 10 years of service.
  4. Inflation Indexation:
    • Applies to assured pension, family pension, and minimum pension.
  5. Dearness Relief:
    • Based on the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW), similar to service employees.
  6. Lump Sum Payment at Superannuation:
    • Calculation: 1/10th of monthly emoluments (pay + DA) for every six months of completed service.
    • Additional Benefit: This payment is in addition to gratuity and does not reduce the assured pension amount.

    • Sanction: 90% for general category, 95% for special category.
    • Interest: Normal rate; repayment over 3 to 7 years with a moratorium as prescribed by the bank.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh Inaugurates Advanced ICG Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Chennai, and Virtually Launches Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre and Coast Guard Air Enclave in Puducherry           

  • Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the newly-constructed state-of-the-art Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre building in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
  • He also virtually launched the Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre, located at the Chennai Port premises, and the Coast Guard Air Enclave in Puducherry.
  • The buildings have been established to ensure robust maritime security and provide efficient responses to emergencies, reinforcing the country’s commitment to maritime safety and environmental protection.

  • Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre : This state-of-the-art facility aims to significantly enhance the coordination and effectiveness of maritime rescue operations for mariners & fishermen in distress at sea.
  • It underscores the Government’s resolve to protect lives and ensure a swift response in critical situations.
  • The Centre is installed with latest equipment for distress monitoring through terrestrial & satellite systems and equipped with advanced communication systems for real-time management of alerts by highly-trained personnel of ICG specialising in Search & Rescue procedures, with the rescue aircraft, ships and other facilities.
  • Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre : This establishment is a first-of-its-kind facility for coordinating response against marine pollution, particularly oil and chemical pollution, in waters adjoining the coastal states in the Indian Ocean Region.
  • The creation of this centre was first announced by Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh during the maiden Indo-ASEAN meeting held in Cambodia on November 22, 2022.
  • Coast Guard Air Enclave : This facility marks a significant milestone for ICG and will play a vital role in maritime security along the Puducherry and south Tamil Nadu coast.
  • The Air Enclave will be equipped with Chetak and Advanced Light Helicopter Squadrons.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration Greenhouse Gas-Tracking Instrument Successfully Launched  

  • A satellite named Tanager-1, developed by a coalition of companies and organizations including National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) Jet Propulsion Laboratory, was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Key Highlights :

  • Detection Capabilities: Tanager-1 is equipped to detect major emitters of greenhouse gases, specifically carbon dioxide and methane.
  • Technology Used: The satellite utilizes imaging spectrometer technology, developed at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, to measure hundreds of wavelengths of light reflected by Earth’s surface, enabling it to track methane and carbon dioxide emissions.

Nokia Collaborates with Axiom Space for NASA’s Moon Mission’s Next-Gen Spacesuit Communication

  • The Artemis-III mission is likely to be launched in 2026 and Nokia plans to build the first cellular network on the moon, which would be in-built in the space suits used by astronauts.
  • Nokia and Axiom Space will incorporate high-speed cellular-network capabilities in the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), supporting HD video, telemetry data and voice transmission over multiple kilometres on the Moon.
