India’s Republic Day 2022:

  • India marks January 26 as its Republic Day every year. In 2022, the country is celebrating its 73rd Republic Day.
  • On this day, the country’s President hoists the flag at Rajpath, New Delhi.
  • The ceremonious event also showcases India’s cultural and social heritage, parades and airshows by the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force.
  • While India gained independence from the British Raj in 1947, it wasn’t until January 26, 1950, that the Indian Constitution came into effect, and India became a sovereign state, declaring it a republic.
  • Dr BR Ambedkar headed the Drafting Committee of the Constitution.
  • Additionally, Constitution Day is celebrated in India on November 26 every year, as on November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India.

Padma Awards 2022 announced:

  • Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
  • The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.
  • ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field.
  • The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
  • These awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/ April every year.
  • This year the President has approved conferment of 128 Padma Awards including 2 case (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one) as per list below.
  • The list comprises 4 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 107 Padma Shri Awards.
  • 34 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and 13 Posthumous awardees.

PM Modi to host first India-Central Asia Summit virtually:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be hosting the first meeting of the India-Central Asia Summit in a virtual format.
  • Presidents of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan will participate.
  • This will be the first engagement of its kind between India and the Central Asian countries at the level of leaders.
  • The first India-Central Asia Summit is a reflection of India’s growing engagement with the Central Asian countries, which are a part of India’s “Extended Neighbourhood”.
  • During the first India-Central Asia Summit, the leaders are expected to discuss steps to take forward India-Central Asia relations to newer heights.
  • They are also expected to exchange views on regional and international issues of interest, especially the evolving regional security situation.
  • The Summit is symbolic of the importance attached by the Leaders of India and the Central Asian countries to a comprehensive and enduring India-Central Asia partnership.

India, France sign MoU with scope for cooperation in health research:

  • India and France have signed an MoU with a scope for cooperation in health research.
  • Science and Technology Ministry, the MoU was signed between Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, CSIR and Institut Pasteur, France.
  • CSIR and Institut Pasteur will jointly research and focus on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases and inherited disorders and enable delivery of effective and affordable healthcare solutions not only for the people of India and France but for the global good.
  • The MoU provides for developing potential scientific and technological cooperation and networking in advanced and emerging areas of Human Health.

DARPG and Government of Jammu & Kashmir to collaborate in 3 major sectors of Next Generation Administrative Reforms:

  • The DARPG and Government of Jammu & Kashmir will collaborate on

(a) creation of an online portal for monitoring progress in 58 District Good Governance Index Indicators

(b) adoption of e-HRMS in the Jammu Secretariat and Srinagar Secretariat and

(c) monitor online the citizen satisfaction in 150 e-Services through Jammu & Kashmir e-Services Delivery Assessment framework.

  • The Jammu & Kashmir District Good Governance Index represents Next Generation Administrative Reform in Benchmarking Governance at District level.
  • It was prepared after extensive stakeholder consultations.
  • The District Good Governance Index of Jammu & Kashmir helps identify the impact of various governance interventions at district level and provides a futuristic roadmap for improving district level governance with targeted interventions.
  • To further strengthen the Good Governance model of Jammu & Kashmir, the 58 indicators of the District Good Governance Index would be monitored on a dedicated portal on and evaluated by an external agency the Centre for Good Governance, Hyderabad.
  • The data collation formats would be decided by Government of Jammu & Kashmir and an online monitoring dashboard would be developed by NIC.
  • This exercise is expected to be completed by mid-February 2022.

A Special Delhi Metro Train to Commemorate ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ Inaugurated:

  • As part of the ongoing ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav-celebrating 75 years of India’s Independence’ (AKAM), a specially decorated Metro train was inauguratedat Yamuna Bank Metro Station on the Blue Line.
  • The train was inducted into passenger services immediately after the launch.
  • The exterior of this eight-coach special train has been exclusively wrapped and decorated with collage of photographs and slogans depicting the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements in the last 75 years signifying the spirit of ‘Aatmnirbhar Bharat’.
  • It was launched in the presence of Dr. Mangu Singh, Managing Director, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and other senior officials
  • The train has been symbolically launched on the occasion of Republic Day Celebrations to spread the idea of nationalism and unity amongst general public.
  • This special train will continue to remain in service throughout the commemorative period of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.

Government notifies PMC Bank’s merger with USFB:

  • All the branches of the scam-hit Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank will function as branches of Unity Small Finance Bank (USFB) with effect from January 25, 2022, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  • This follows the Government of India sanctioning and notifying the Scheme for the amalgamation of PMC Bank with USFB.
  • The appointed date for the amalgamation is January 25, 2022.
  • PMC Bank’s retail depositors with deposits of more than Rs 5 lakh, however, will be disappointed with the provisions of the Scheme.

IMF cuts India’s GDP growth estimate to 9 per cent in FY22:

  • International Monetary Fund (IMF) lowered India’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth rate by 50 basis points to 9 per cent in Fiscal Year 2021-22 (FY22).
  • In October, it has maintained the estimated rate of 9.5 per cent during the current fiscal.
  • 100 basis points mean one percentage point
  • The revision in growth estimate has been made public at a time, when Government is getting ready to present Union Budget for FY 23 and Economic Survey for FY 22.
  • The survey is expected to give revise growth estimate for current fiscal and first estimate for fiscal. Survey will be tabled in the Parliament on January 31 while budget will be on February 1.

Karnataka Bank introduces mobile banking facility for NRIs:

  • Karnataka Bank Ltd has launched a mobile banking facility for its NRI customers through the existing mobile banking application – ‘KBL MobilePlus’.
  • According to the bank, NRI customers can access a whole range of banking facilities with this facility.
  • These include fund transfer, bill payments, credit card payments, deposit opening and closing, and account statement.
  • The bank is extremely pleased to roll out NRI mobile banking facility and Kannada Language user interface in the bank’s mobile banking application ‘KBL MobilePlus’.

Olympian Neeraj Chopra honoured with Param Vishisht Seva Medal:

  • Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra has been bestowed the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in this year’s list of defence decorations, which include gallantry medals for soldiers and police forces involved in counterterror operations in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast.
  • The PVSM is usually accorded to three-star officers for distinguished service to the nation.
  • Chopra is a Subedar in the Rajputana Rifles.
  • It is the highest non-gallantry decoration given to defence personnel.
  • Chopra conducted his training at the Army’s sports institutions and was picked to join the service as part of Mission Olympic, an initiative to identify young athletes and give them a secure career so that they can concentrate on sporting activities.

Armenian President Armen Sarkissian quits

  • Armen Sarkissian announced that he was stepping down as president of Armenia, citing his inability to influence policy during times of crisis.
  • Sarkissian, president since 2018, was at the centre of a domestic political crisis last year that erupted in the wake of a war between Armenia and its longstanding rival Azerbaijan for control of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya launches Revamped CGHS Website and Mobile App MyCGHS”

  • Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare digitally launched the revamped CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme) website (www.cghs.gov.in) and mobile app, MyCGHS, in the presence of Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare.
  • It is an important and timely step towards catering to India’s increasing digital penetration.
  • The website has several updated features which shall hugely benefit more than 40 lakhs beneficiaries (both in-service and retired personnel) with real-time information from the convenience of their homes.

  7. The website provides link to the online Grievance Portal developed for CGHS beneficiaries with provision for the grievance to be sent directly to the concerned officer with both SMS and email alert to the concerned officer for timely redressal of complaints.
  8. The website also has a link to beneficiary login for accessing various online facilities  such as tracking of Medical Claims, grievances, status of CGHS card, downloading of CGHS card, accessing history of medicines, online appointment system and various other facilities.

Indian military awards contracts Saab for supply of AT4 anti-tank weapons

  • Swedish defence empire Saab was awarded a contract to supply single- shot anti-armour armament AT4 to the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force (IAF).
  • The AT4 systems are combat-proven across the world & they are lightweight, single-shot, fully disposable and truly characterized by its ease of use and handling.
  • The AT4CS AST, which can be fired from confined spaces such as from inside buildings, bunkers and other urban environments.
  • It weighs around 9 kg and has an effective range of 200m.
  • AT4CS AST, as per the makers, has an effective range of 20 to 300 meters and can penetrate armor as thick as 17.5 inches.
  • AT4 is one of the most popular and successful support weapon families on the market.

India among top 10 nations to adopt Artificial Intelligence

  • According to findings from a study published by The Brookings Institution, India is among the top 10 nations in the world in terms of technological advancements and funding in artificial intelligence.
  • While India is outside the top 10 in terms of commercial and research initiatives, it ranks sixth in terms of spending and investments on AI made by the public, governmental initiatives, as well as private institutions and organizations.
  • The United States, China, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, and Germany are leading AI advances ahead of India.
  • According to the survey, India is followed by Canada, South Korea, and Italy in the top ten AI adopters list.
  • The study measures each country’s peak computer power, as well as the number of papers published and patents filed in the field of AI, in terms of technological breakthroughs and research activities.
  • According to a December 2021 assessment by McKinsey Analytics on the state of AI in 2021, India was the largest commercial and business adopter of AI among emerging economies.
  • Meanwhile, Deloitte’s research on the state of AI adoption in India, published in December 2021, broke down AI adoption in India by industry.
  • According to the research, the Indian retail industry was the most advanced in adopting AI technology and services, followed by telecommunications and finance.

NASA offers $1 million for innovative ideas to feed astronauts in ‘Deep Space Food Challenge’

  • In coordination with the Canadian Space Agency, NASA has launched Phase 2 of the challenge called ‘Deep Space Food Challenge’.
  • The competition calls on teams to design, build, and demonstrate prototypes of food production technologies that provide tangible nutritional products or food.
  • It will help future astronauts to produce nutritious, tasty, and satisfying meals on long-duration space missions that require minimal resources and produce minimal waste.
  • NASA now invites both new and existing teams to enter Phase 2 for a prize purse up to $1 million.
  • In October 2021, Phase 1 of the challenge culminated as NASA awarded 18 teams a total of $450,000 for their concepts for innovative food production technology that produces safe, acceptable, palatable, nutritious food products.

Lucknow’s IPL team to be called Lucknow SuperGiants

  • The Lucknow franchise of the Indian Premier League will be called Lucknow SuperGiants.
  • The official IPL team of Lucknow, owned by RPSG Group, decided to take public opinions from its fans and the name was shared by owner Sanjiv Goenka.
  • IPL’s two new teams : Sanjiv Goenka RPSG Group for the Lucknow franchise and CVC Capital’s Ahmedabad team had received formal clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
  • The side will be captained by India international KL Rahul and coached by former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower.
  • In 2021, the franchise was purchased by the Sanjiv Goenka-owned RPSG group for an amount of Rs 7090 Crores.
  • The other new team to enter the competition is from Ahmedabad who were bought by the Irelia Company Pte Ltd. (CVC Capital Partners) for Rs 5635 Crores.
  • On January 21, 2022 the RPSG group owned Lucknow franchise signed KL Rahul for Rs 17 crore, Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis for Rs 9.2 crore and uncapped leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi for Rs 4 crore.

Swadesh Darshan scheme.

Launched on :

Swadesh Darshan, a Central Sector Scheme, was launched in 2014 -15 for integrated development of theme based tourist circuits in the country.

There is a great scope and need to develop tourist circuits on specific themes to attract the tourists having special interest in visiting such places.

This can be achieved only through an integrated approach by providing engaging experiences for distinct categories of tourists i.e. Domestic and International.

Various themes which are unique and specific to the area can include beaches, culture, heritage, wildlife etc.

Such theme based tourist circuits should be developed in a manner that supports communities, provides employment and fosters social integration without comprising upon the environmental concerns and provides unique experiences to the tourists. .

In due recognition to this the Government of India, Ministry of Tourism (MoT) launched the Swadesh Darshan Scheme (Central Sector Scheme)– for integrated development of theme based tourist circuits in the country in 2014-15.

This scheme is envisioned to synergise with other Government of India schemes like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Skill India, Make in India etc. with the idea of positioning the tourism sector as a major engine for job creation, driving force for economic growth, building synergy with various sectors to enable tourism to realise its potential.

Procedure for Project Preparation, Approval, Implementation

Selection & Evaluation Criteria for projects The projects and proposals can flow from three levels based on the need assessment and stakeholder interactions.

These levels are i. Ministry of Tourism ii. Central Agencies iii. State Governments/ UT Administrations. Concept presentation would be made to MoT highlighting the potential, need, impact of the project by the agency proposing the project and its alignment to the Detailed Perspective Plan prepared by the ministry.

After in-principle approval, site evaluation would be carried out and Conceptual Detailed Project Report (DPR) would be prepared.

A successful project shall have the following attributes and weightage given as per below:

Criteria :

Potential to be showcased as world class destination with diverse tourism experiences. Proximity to existing destinations with connectivity and other infrastructure.

Job creation and livelihood enhancement in the region, while conserving and promoting the local arts, cultural, handicrafts, cuisine etc. at the destination.

Ability to attract investment in private sector/PPP with specific provisions.

Follow a comprehensive area development approach for ensuring all the facilities required by the tourists in the identified circuits.

Robust Operation and Management plan (O&M) as per pre-agreed service standards evaluated periodically by an independent agency.

Benefits :

The scheme aims to promote, develop and harness the potential of tourism in India.Under the Swadesh Darshan scheme, the Ministry of Tourism provides Central Financial Assistance – CFA to State Governments, Union Territory Administrations for the infrastructure development of circuits.

This scheme is envisioned to synergise with other schemes like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Skill India, Make in India etc. with the idea of positioning the tourism sector as a major engine for job creation, the driving force for economic growth, building synergy with various sectors to enable tourism to realise its potential.

Disbursal of Funds:

The Scheme is 100% centrally funded and efforts are made to achieve convergence with other schemes of Central and State Governments and also to leverage the voluntary funding available for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives of Central Public Sector Undertakings and Corporate Sector.

Funds would be released as under –

Installment Percentage
1st 30% of the project cost on submission of work orders, Good for construction DPR with GFC statuary approvals from respective agencies for construction initiation and detailed BOQs
2nd 30% of the project cost after receipt of utilization certificate for the first instalment
3rd 25% of the project cost after receipt of utilization certificate for the second instalment
4th 10% of the project cost on completion of the work and receipt of utilization certificate
5th 5% of the project cost after successful O&M of Toilet, TFC, Cafeteria facilities for one year as certified by an independent agency
