Statehood Day 2022 of Maharashtra and Gujarat:

  • On May 1, 2022, Maharashtra and Gujarat celebrated their statehood days.
  • The Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960, separated the bilingual state of Bombay into two independent states on May 1, 1960: Maharashtra for Marathi speakers and Gujarat for Gujarati speakers.

National Dengue Day 2022:16th May

  • Every year on the 16th of May, India commemorates National Dengue Day.
  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare created National Dengue Day to raise public awareness about dengue fever and how to prevent it.

About dengue:

  • Dengue fever is spread by the mosquito Aedes Aegypti.
  • It’s a female mosquito that bites humans and spreads dengue fever.
  • Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease caused by the dengue virus, which has four different genotypes: DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4.
  • Dengue fever causes severe muscle pain and nausea, and if not treated appropriately, it can lead to death.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2022:

  • Every year on May 17th, the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is commemorated to raise awareness of the advantages and opportunities that the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) give to nations, societies, and economies.
  • This year’s theme for World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is “Digital technologies for older people and healthy ageing”.
  • It also aims to increase awareness of ways to bridge the digital gap.

History:

  • WTISD marks the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
  • The International Telecommunication Union was founded on May 17, 1865, and World Telecommunication Day was established in 1969 to celebrate that date.
  • However, in 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society urged that the United Nations General Assembly declare May 17 as World Information Society Day.
  • The UN General Assembly decided in March 2006 that WISD would be held every year on May 17th.
  • In 2006, the ITU decided to combine the two holidays and name its World Telecommunication and Information Society Day at a Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey.

World Hypertension Day: 17th May

  • Every year on May 17th, World Hypertension Day is commemorated to raise awareness and support hypertension prevention, detection, and treatment.
  • High blood pressure is a key risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and it is known as the “Silent Killer”.
  • Blood pressure is the force exerted by flowing blood on the walls of the body’s arteries, or primary blood vessels.
  • Hypertension is a condition in which blood pressure is abnormally high.
  • Blood pressure is calculated using a two-digit number.
  • The first number (systolic) indicates the pressure in blood vessels when the heart contracts or beats.
  • The second number (diastolic) represents the pressure in the arteries while the heart is not beating.
  • If the systolic blood pressure measurements on two distinct days are both 140 mmHg and/or the diastolic blood pressure readings on both days are 90 mmHg, hypertension is diagnosed.

History:

  • World Hypertension Day was recognised and started by the World Hypertension League (WHL), which is an umbrella organisation for 85 national hypertension societies and leagues (WHD).
  • The day’s purpose was to increase hypertension awareness.
  • This was especially important because people with hypertension lacked the requisite knowledge. The WHL unveiled their first WHD on May 14, 2005.
  • The World Hypertension League has declared May 17 as World Hypertension Day since 2006.
  • Individuals with diabetes or chronic renal illness should have blood pressures of less than 130/80 mmHg.
  • The following cut-off values have been proposed by international and Canadian authorities.

Amit Shah inaugurated the National Cyber Forensic Laboratory at CFSL in Hyderabad:

  • The National Cyber Forensic Laboratory (NCFL) was established on the grounds of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Hyderabad by Home Minister Amit Shah.
  • The NCFL intends to speed up the resolution of cybercrime cases throughout the country.
  • In December 2021, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) authorised the establishment of the NCFL for tracking purposes in the CFSL, Hyderabad.

About CFSL and NCFL:

  • There are seven CFSLs in the country which have dedicated facilities for electronic forensics, including computer and cyber forensics.
  • A state-of-the-art NCFL has been established at CyPAD, Dwarka, New Delhi to provide early-stage cyber forensic assistance to Investigating Officers (IOs) of State/UT Police.
  • Cyber forensic-cum-training laboratories have been commissioned in 28 states/union territories, namely Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Odisha, Sikkim, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Punjab, Assam, Tripura, Puducherry, Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh, Rajasthan and West Bengal

NITI Aayog has launched a National Data and Analytics Platform:

  • NITI Aayog launched the National Data & Analytics Platform (NDAP) for free public usage.
  • The platform aims to democratise access to public government data by making data accessible, interoperable, interactive, and available on a user-friendly platform.
  • It organises and houses basic datasets from many government ministries, as well as provides analytics and visualisation tools.
  • This public debut follows the platform’s beta rollout in August 2021, which offered a restricted number of users access to testing and feedback.
  • Amitabh Kant, CEO of NITI Aayog Dr Anantha Nageswaran is the Government of India’s Chief Economic Advisor Mr Suman Bery, Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog, and other top officials from NITI Aayog, several ministries and state governments, academicians, and researchers launched the platform.

Niti Aayog:

  • NDAP employs a use-case methodology to ensure that the datasets provided on the platform are tailored to the needs of data users from government, academia, journalism, civil society, and the private sector.
  • All datasets have the same structure, making it easy to merge them and do cross-sectoral analysis.

At the Incredible India International Cruise Conference, eight Memorandums of Understanding were signed:

  • Eight Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) were signed at the first Incredible India International Cruise Conference that was jointly organised by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Government of India and FICCI.
  • Strategies for developing India as a cruise hub, policy initiatives and port infrastructure, the potential of river cruise tourism, and the role of technology in the post-pandemic world were some of the key issues deliberated at the two-day event.

  • Sagarika: The International Cruise Terminal in Kochi was just inaugurated.
  • It will be able to accommodate over 100,000 people.

  • Three Primary Programs for Tourist Infrastructure Development: The three major central government schemes for the development of India’s tourism sector are SWADESH DARSHAN, PRASHAD, and Central Financial Assistance.

RBI imposes monetary penalty on KEB Hana Bank

  • Reserve Bank of India has imposed a penalty of Rs 59 lakh on KEB Hana Bank (Formerly Korea Exchange Bank) for non-compliance with the certain norms related to ‘interest rate on deposits’.
  • The bank has been penalized for non-compliance with the directions issued by RBI on ”Reserve Bank of India (Interest Rate on Deposits) Directions, 2016”.
  • The penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers vested in RBI under the provisions of Section 47 A (1) (c) read with sections 46 (4) (i) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 (the Act).
  • The penalty is based on the deficiencies in regulatory compliance and is not intended to pronounce upon the validity of any transaction or agreement entered into by the bank with its customers.

Background :

  • RBI conducted the statutory inspection for supervisory evaluation of KEB Hana Bank with reference to its financial position as on March 31, 2020.

WPI inflation hits record 15.08% in Aprilon price rise across all items

  • Wholesale price-based inflation spiked to a record high of 15.08 percent in April on rising prices across segments from food to commodities.
  • The WPI-based inflation was 14.55 percent in March and 10.74 percent in April 2021.
  • Since 2012-13, The WPI at 15.08% is the highest in the new series.
  • Since April 2021, WPI inflation has remained in double digit for the 13th consecutive month.
  • The high rate of inflation in April 2022 was primarily due to rise in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, crude petroleum & natural gas, food articles, non-food articles, food products and chemicals & chemical products etc.

Key Highlights :

  • Inflation in food articles was 8.35% as prices of vegetables, wheat, fruits and potato witnessed a sharp spike over the year-ago period.
  • In the fuel and power basket, inflation was 38.66%, while in manufactured products and oil seeds, it was 10.85% and 16.10%, respectively.
  • Inflation in crude petroleum and natural gas was 69.07% in April.
  • Core inflation accelerated for the third consecutive month to 11.1 percent from 10.9 per cent in March 2022.
  • Manufactured products inflation was also up at 10.9 per cent in April from 10.7 per cent in March.

RBI allows Lending by Commercial Banks to NBFCs & SFBs to NBFC-MFIs, for on-lending to priority sectors

  • The Reserve Bank of India has permitted lending by scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) to non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) for the purpose of on-lending to priority sector loan (PSL).
  • Along with this, the central bank has also permitted small finance banks (SFB) to tag loans to microfinance institutions (MFIs) as PSL loans on an on-going basis.
  • The lending was permitted up to March 31, 2022.
  • Bank credit to NBFCs (including HFCs) for on-lending will be allowed up to an overall limit of 5% of an individual bank’s total priority sector lending in the case of commercial banks.
  • In the case of SFBs, credit to NBFC-MFIs and other MFIs (societies, trusts, etc.) which are members of RBI recognized ‘Self-Regulatory Organisation’ of the sector, will be allowed up to an overall limit of 10% of an individual bank’s total priority sector lending.
  • SFBs are allowed to lend to registered NBFC-MFIs and other MFIs which have a gross loan portfolio (GLP) of up to Rs 500 crore as on March 31,of the previous financial year for on-lending to the priority sector.

What is priority sector lending?

  • Priority sector lending is about the necessary lending by banks to economically weaker sections.
  • Commercial banks are required to lend at least 40 percent of their loan to PSL category while the SFBs are required to extend 75 percent.

RBI appoints Sitikantha Pattanaik, Rajiv Ranjan as executive directors

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Rajiv Ranjan and Sitikantha Pattanaik as executive directors with effect from May 1, 2022.
  • As Executive Director, Ranjan will look after the Monetary Policy Department, while Pattanaik will look after the Department of Economic and Policy Research (DEPR).

About Sitikantha Pattanaik :

  • Pattanaik has a PhD in economics from the University of Mumbai.
  • He has, over a span of three decades, worked in the areas of economic research and monetary policy in RBI’s Monetary Policy Department and Department of Economic Policy and Research.
  • He was with the Central Bank of Oman on deputation from RBI for about five years.
  • Prior to being promoted as executive director, Pattanaik was an Adviser in the Department of Economic and Policy Research (DEPR).

About Rajiv Ranjan :

  • Ranjan has a PhD in economics from Mumbai University and holds a Masters degree in economics from the Delhi School of Economics.
  • He has an experience of more than three decades in macroeconomic policy and research including monetary policy, fiscal policy, real sector, external sector and international relations.
  • He has worked in various departments of RBI like the Monetary Policy Department, Department of Economic Policy and Research, Department of External Investments and Operations and International Department.
  • He served as Economic Policy Expert in the Central Bank of Oman for three years.
  • Prior to becoming ED, Rajiv Ranjan was serving as Adviser-in-Charge of the Monetary Policy Department and Secretary to the Monetary Policy Committee.
  • Ranjan will also serve as an ex-officio member of the rate-setting panel Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).

Vinay Kwatra takes charge as India’s new Foreign Secretary

  • Senior Indian Foreign Service officer Vinay Mohan Kwatra took charge as India’s new Foreign Secretary.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Kwatra.
  • He succeeded incumbent Harsh Vardhan Shringla.

About Vinay Mohan Kwatra :

  • Vinay Mohan Kwatra is a 1988-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer.
  • He has served as a diplomat for over 32 years and is credited for improving the India-Nepal ties in his tenure.
  • From May 2010 to July 2013, he was Minister (Commerce) at the Embassy of India in Washington D.C.
  • Kwatra headed the Policy Planning & Research Division of the Ministry of External Affairs between July 2013 and October 2015
  • He has held the position of a Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for two years between October 2015 and August 2017.
  • He served as the head of the Americas Division in the Foreign Ministry where he dealt with India’s relations with the US and Canada.
  • He served as the Ambassador of India to France from August 2017 to February 2020.
  • He is known to have extensive expertise in dealing with India’s neighborhood as well as the U.S, China and Europe.
  • He took charge as the foreign secretary at a time India is dealing with various geopolitical developments including the Ukraine conflict, the severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka and situation in Afghanistan and developments in the Indo-Pacific.

Lt. Gen. B.S. Raju appointed Vice Chief of Army Staff

  • On May 01, 2022, The Indian Army’s Director General of Military Operations, Lt. Gen. B.S. Raju, has been appointed as the next Vice Chief of the Army Staff.
  • He will succeed incumbent Gen Manoj Pande.
  • Meanwhile, Gen Manoj Pande has been appointed as the 29th Chief of Army Staff & he has succeeded General MM Naravane.
  • Pande is also the first engineer to hold the position of the Chief of Army Staff.

Role of Vice Chief of the Army Staff :

  • The army Vice Chief is the deputy head and the second highest-ranking officer of the Indian Army.
  • The position is held by a senior officer in the rank of Lieutenant General, of the Commander-in-Chief grade.

  • S. Raju is an alumnus of Sainik School Bijapur and National Defence Academy and was commissioned into the JAT Regiment on December 15, 1984.
  • In his illustrious career spanning 38 years, he had commanded his battalion during ‘Operation Parakram’ in the Western theatre and in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • He served as the Commandant, Indian Military Training Team in Bhutan.

Somalia elects Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as new president

  • Somalia’s former leader Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been elected as president of Somalia after defeating Mohamed Abudallahi Farmajo who has been in office since 2017.
  • Mr Mohamud received 214 votes, defeating Mr Farmajo who won 110 votes.
  • The ballot was limited to Somalia’s 328 MPs.

Additional Info :

  • This is only the third time that the indirect election for president has been able to take place in Somalia (Previous ones were held in neighboring Kenya and Djibouti.)

NAL initiates taxi trials for evaluation of indigenously developed digital anti skid braking system for SARAS Mk 2

  • The National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) initiated taxi trials for the evaluation of an indigenously developed digital anti-skid braking system for the civil aircraft, SARAS Mk2, 19-seat Light Transport aircraft.
  • The state-of-the-art brake by wire electro-hydraulic braking system is developed for the first time in India for civil aircrafts by NAL which is part of CSIR labs.
  • SARAS Mark 2 aircraft being developed by NAL has indigenously built most advanced high performance integrated avionics and flight control computer embedded with multicore power PC, VPX bus architecture and ARINC 635 compliant real-time operating system with safety-critical partitioned virtual wall.
  • The low-speed taxi trial was conducted at the speed of about 30 knots and the results are highly satisfactory.
  • There will be about 15 to 20 taxi trials to evaluate system performance.
  • Digital anti-skid braking system integration on SARAS Mk2 will benefit operation from airfields with short runways to boost regional air connectivity.

  • The Central Government had sanctioned the SARAS-Mk2-19 seat Light Transport project to NAL in June 2019.
  • It is a multirole commuter aircraft with unique features like the pressurised cabin, short take-off and landing, operation from hot and high altitude airfields, operation from semi-prepared runways, autopilot for CAT-II landing, glass cockpit, digitally controlled mechanical systems.
  • It is also considered the most versatile aircraft of its class for connecting remotely located Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities and towns under the UDAAN Scheme.
  • The first flight of SARAS Mk 2 is planned for December 2024.

Urgent Action Needed to Ensure a Resilient Energy Transition Amid Severe Global Challenges- WEF

  • According to the World Economic Forum’s new report, titled Fostering Effective Energy Transition 2022, urgent action is required by both private and public sectors to ensure a resilient transition as the world faces the most severe energy crisis since the 1970s.
  • The report launched in collaboration with Accenture, details key recommendations for governments, companies, consumers and other stakeholders on how to progress the energy transition.
  • The report is Building on 10 years of the Energy Transition Index, an annual country benchmarking report.

About the report :

  • The report reveals the structural barriers to balancing energy affordability, security and availability with sustainability.
  • As per the report, the urgency for countries to accelerate a holistic energy transition is reinforced by high fuel prices, commodities’ shortages, insufficient headway on achieving the climate goals and slow progress on energy justice and access.
  • It also states that energy transition must address the challenges to environmental sustainability, energy security and energy justice and affordability.

Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2022: India ranks 4th

  • The Times Higher Education (THE), publisher of the globally recognised THE World University Rankings, released the 2022 edition of its Impact Rankings.
  • According to the rankings, 1 Indian University has been placed in the Top 50 while 2 Indian Universities are placed in Top 100.
  • Around 64 Indian universities have been featured on THE Impact Rankings 2022 making India the 4th best-represented country in the ranking.
  • The list includes 8 Indian universities among the top 300.
  • Among 1,524 universities from 110 countries/regions ranked on work towards the UN’s SDGs across 18 tables, an overall ranking and one for each of the 17 SDGs.

  • From India, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham was ranked at 41 while Lovely Professional University was placed at 74
  • Also, Amrita Vishwa placed eighth place for SDG 3 (good health and well-being) and SDG 5 (gender equality).
  • Lovely Professional University makes the top 100 at joint 74th place in the overall table and is sixth for SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy).
  • Calcutta University has been ranked first among all the central and state-aided public universities in the country by Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2022.
  • The varsity has been ranked 14th globally in the ‘Decent Work and Economic Growth’ sub-category.

  • Korea surprised defending champions China to win their second Uber Cup title during an exciting final at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
