In a bid to fortify the stability of the financial system, policy researchers are advocating for the inclusion of a new parameter, the Debt-to-Income (DTI) ratio, when evaluating the creditworthiness of individuals seeking retail loans. To prevent potential adverse impacts on the overall system, according to a research paper released by economists at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)Utilization of Technology: Policymakers urge lenders to leverage emerging technology ecosystems like account aggregators to obtain necessary borrower consent, enhance credit underwriting, and improve model monitoring.Flexibility for Borrowers: Implementation of such frameworks not only offers borrowers greater flexibility in terms of product and pricing choices but also enables comprehensive monitoring of borrower leverage.Macroprudential Tools: Researchers argue that incorporating DTI limits alongside existing Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratio restrictions can serve as effective macroprudential tools to manage systemic risks within the lending landscape.Mitigating Systemic Risks:Synchronization of these tools is deemed crucial for effectively mitigating systemic risks in the lending sector, as emphasized in the RBI economists’ research paper.Differential Risk Weights: The paper proposes the adoption of varying risk weights for different retail product classes, reflecting their respective levels of riskiness.
