Employee’s State Insurance Corporation Scheme (ESIC) was brought into existence in the year 1952 by the Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It is a self-financing social-security and health insurance scheme. This scheme provides multi-dimensional Social Security System for the workers of independent India. The employees registered with scheme can entitled to medical treatments. In-case of disablement or death of the employee the scheme will provide disablement benefit to the family of the employee with pensions.
ESIC runs medical, dental, nursing and paramedical schools in many locations of India. Outpatient medical facilities are available in 1418 ESI dispensaries and through 1,678 private medical practitioners. Inpatient care is available in 145 ESI hospitals and 42 hospital annexes with a total of 19,387 beds. In addition, several state government hospitals also have beds for exclusive use of ESI Beneficiaries. Cash benefits can be availed in any of 830 ESI centers throughout India.
