According to the question,
[120/(x – 12)] + [120/(x + 12)] = 75/42x/(x2 – 144) = (75/4)*(1/120)

5x2 – 100x + 36x – 720 = 0
5x(x – 20) + 36(x – 20) = 0
(5x + 36) (x – 20) = 0

The speed of the boat in still water = 20 Km/hr

The difference between the simple interest and compound interest for 2 years is,
Diff = sum*(r/100)2
256 = sum*(8/100)2
256 = sum*(64/10000)
Sum = 2560000/64 = Rs. 40000
