Answers :

Directions (1-5) :

1) Answer: D

The term “ward” has multiple meanings. As a noun, it could either be a separate room or section in a hospital allotted to a particular type of patients only (for e.g. childrens’ ward)or an administrative section or part of a city (the newest ward in the city). As a verb, it is used to convey the meaning of to guard orprotect someone or something (for e.g. it is his duty to ward the king). Going by the above, all 3 sentences have different intended meanings of the term but all are used correctly.

Therefore option D is the correct answer to this question.

2) Answer: B

The term “swing” has multiple meanings. It means a seat suspended by ropes or chains on which a person sit and swing back and forth, a common source of entertainment for children. It also means the act of moving something back & forth or side to side, generally generating significant force. Thus, the use of the term is correct in sentences I and III. Sentence II makes no sense.

Therefore option B is the correct answer to this question.

3) Answer: C

Bat is an animal, the only flying mammal. Bat is also a sports equipment, usually made of wood, that is used in games like cricket and baseball. The use of the term “bat” is thus correct in sentences II & III. However, sentence I makes no sense. A house can be “battered” by a storm but “batted” is incorrect use.

Therefore option C is the correct answer to this question.

4) Answer: D

The term “compact” has multiple uses. As an adjective, it means something that is dense, very closely packed together and hence difficult to enter or breach. For e.g. the bushes were too dense for me to walk through. In this form, it is used correctly in sentence I. As a noun, it is used to describe something that is small and conveniently shaped, generally electronic devices or gadgets. In this form, the use is correct in sentence II. However, sentence III is wrong – the correct term was “complicated” and not “compacted”.

Therefore option D is the correct answer to this question.

5) Answer: D

A desert is a barren area of landscape where little precipitation occurs and consequently living conditions are hostile for plant, animal and humans. In verb form, (to) desert means to abandon or leave something. Deserted is an adjective usually meaning a place that is empty or devoid of people. A sweet dish served at the end of a meal is known as “dessert”. Thus, the term is correctly used in sentences I and III.

Therefore option D is the correct answer to this question.

Direction (6-10):

The correct sequence is DEACB. Therefore the 4th sentence is sentence C which means option A is the correct answer to this question.

The first sentence of the paragraph is given which talks about how India’s numbers of infected cases per million population and deaths per million population is lower than the global average. It is therefore fair to deduce that the next sentences would be about the situation in different Indian states. Given a large and diverse country like India, it is possible that certain states/UTs would have higher nos. than the national average and some lower.

Connectors:

First sentence and D: After the national figures, the next statement should go into some specific detail about individual states that stands out in contrast to the national number. The latter is lower than the world average on both cases and deaths per million. Hence D as the next statement makes most sense as it is stating that are 9 states which have more cases per million than global average and 2 states which have more deaths per million than global average, i.e. in complete contrast to the national statistics. Thus, D makes the most sense to follow after the given first sentence.

D and E: since statement D talks about some states with higher cases and deaths per million than world average, logically the sentence that follows it should throw some light on the identity of said states. Statement C does mention some states which have a higher number of cases than world average but it also describes these states as “other states” which means that some states have already been mentioned in the passage which fulfill the criterion. Statement E mentions three states which have the highest no. of cases per million among all Indian states. Therefore, these states are definitely ones which have more cases than the world average and were indirectly referenced in statement C. Thus, statement D follows E.

E and A: The original sentence and first statement to follow i.e. D both mention two metrices: cases per million and deaths per million. The 2nd statement though talks only about cases per million. We know there were 2 states with deaths per million higher than global average. Statement A says that Delhi and Maharashtra (already namedropped in statement E) also have highest deaths per million in the country. It means these were the 2 states referred to in statement D. Thus A follows E to form a coherent sequence (DEA)

A and C: There were 9 states/UTs that had higher no. of cases per million that the world average and 2 with more deaths/million than world average. We have already learnt of the identity of the latter but only 3 of the 9 states of the former measure. Hence, it is logical that the next statement should reveal the names of the remaining 6 states/UTs that is done by statement C, which therefore becomes the 4th statement in the sequence.

C and B: The statements so far have further qualified the first statement in the sequence after the opening sentence, naming the states/UTs with higher case loads and deaths than national figure. It is likely that after this, the next statement would talk about those states/UTs that have lower than national average nos. Hence, statement B is the 5th statement in the sequence.
