Gallantry Award

Word ‘Param’ means ‘Ultimate’ and ‘Vir’ means ‘Brave’ which translates to the Ultimate Brave. It is the supreme gallantry award of our country. It is a wartime award given to persons who have shown extreme courage during wartime i.e. in presence of an enemy. The Param Vir chakra was designed by Savitri Khanolkar and the first recipient of the award was Major Somnath Sharma.
Features of Param Vir Chakra:
- It is a circular bronze disc of 34.9 mm in diameter.
- In the center of the front side of the award, the National Emblem of India is drawn. It is surrounded by vajra i.e. the weapon of Lord Indra.
- The motifs on the award represent the sacrifice of rishi Dadhich.
- Lotus flower is present on the reverse side of the award.
- The word ‘Param Vir Chakra’ is written in two languages i.e. Hindi and English.
- A ribbon of purple color holds the award.
