International Day of Democracy

  • The International Day of Democracy is celebrated around the world on 15 September each year. The theme for International Day of Democracy 2020 is “COVID-19: A Spotlight on Democracy.”

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

  • September 16 was designated by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer or World Ozone Day.
  • The theme for 2020 is Ozone for life: 35 years of ozone layer protection.

World Patient Safety Day: 17 September

  • Recognizing patient safety as a global health priority, all 194 WHO Member States at the 72nd World Health Assembly, in May 2019, endorsed the establishment of World Patient Safety Day (Resolution WHA72.6), to be marked annually on 17 September. Theme: Health Worker Safety: A Priority for Patient Safety

International Equal Pay-Day

  • International Equal Pay Day, celebrated for the first time this 18 September, represents the longstanding efforts towards the achievement of equal pay for work of equal value.

World Bamboo Day

  • World Bamboo Day was officially established on September 18 at the 8th World Bamboo Congress held in Bangkok in 2009 and declared by the Thai Royal Forest Department.

International Coastal CleanUp Day

  • During the third Saturday in September, International Coastal CleanUp Day encourages people to rid beaches of the garbage plaguing beaches. This year it falls on 19th September.

International Day of Peace

  • Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September.
  • The 2020 theme for the International Day of Peace is “Shaping Peace Together.”

PM Modi inaugurates 3 petroleum projects worth Rs 900cr in Bihar

  • These projects that will help meet the demand for domestic cooking gas in the state include state-run Indian Oil Corporation’s 193-km long Durgapur-Banka section of the Paradip-Haldia-Durgapur liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) pipeline that will supply cooking gas for bottling at the new Banka plant in the state.

Govt launches Postage Stamp commemorating Mission Shakti’s success

  • A customized My Stamp on India’s First Anti Satellite Missile (A-SAT) was launched on the occasion of Engineers Day on September 15 in the presence of Ajit Doval, National Security Advisor (NSA). The stamp was released by Department of Posts.

Cabinet approves establishment of new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Darbhanga, Bihar

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has approved establishment of a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Darbhanga, Bihar. This will be established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
  • The total cost will be 1264 crore and is likely to be completed within a period of 48 months from the date of the approval of Government of India.

Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor gets nod from cabinet

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the 121-km Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor, which will connect Palwal and Sonipat, and decongest the national capital region.

PM Garib Kalyan Package Insurance Scheme for Health Workers Fighting COVID-19’ extended for another 6 months

  • The ‘Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package Insurance Scheme for Health Workers Fighting COVID-19’ was announced on 30 March 2020 for a period of 90 days. This was extended for a further period of 90 days i.e. up to 25th Sept, 2020.

Lok Sabha passes bill to cut salaries of MPs by 30%

  • The Lok Sabha passed a bill to cut salaries of all MPs by 30 per cent for a year, to meet the exigencies arising out COVID-19 pandemic. The Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament (Amendment) Bill, 2020 was unanimously passed by the members of the Lower House.

Lok Sabha passes Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill

  • Bill seeks to strengthen regulatory framework around cooperatives undertaking banking activities
  • The Lok Sabha passed the Banking Regulation (amendment) Bill 2020 that seeks to protect the depositors of cooperative banks and empower the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to regulate the banking activities of cooperative societies.

PM Modi to dedicate historic Kosi Rail Mahasetu to the Nation

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi shall dedicate to the nation the historic Kosi Rail Mahasetu (mega bridge) to the Nation through video-conference.
  • Apart from this the Prime Minister shall also inaugurate 12 rail projects related to passenger facilities for the benefit of the Bihar State.

Parliament passes Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda Bill 2020

  • The Bill was earlier passed in Lok Sabha on 19th March, 2020. This paves the way to establish a state-of-the-art Ayurvedic institution called the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA) at Jamnagar, Gujarat, and to confer the status of Institution of National Importance (INI) to it.

India seeks Blue Flag eco-label for its eight beaches, launches its own tag ‘BEAMS’ for clean beach

  • A national jury, composed of environmentalists and scientists, has recommended India’s eight beaches for consideration by international jury for the coveted International eco-label, the Blue Flag certification.
  • The Blue Flag beaches are considered the cleanest beaches of the world.

Delhi’s IGI airport gets India’s first terminal for chartered planes, can handle 150 jets per day

  • Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a GMR Group-led consortium launched India’s first General Aviation Terminal facility for private jets at Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Lok Sabha passes several bills including National Forensic Science University Bill 2020

  • Lok Sabha has passed The National Forensic Science University Bill 2020. The Bill establishes National Forensic Science University as an institute of national importance. The proposed university would facilitate and promote studies and research and help achieve excellence in the field of forensic science in conjunction with applied behavioural science studies, law, criminology and other allied areas.

Govt launches Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan in 272 most affected districts

  • Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has formulated and is implementing a National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) for 2018-2025. The Plan aims at reduction of adverse consequences of drug abuse through a multi-pronged strategy.

DPIIT extends date of implementation of Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020 to 1st January 2021

  • The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade issued notification extending the date of implementation of Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020 as 1st January 2021 in place of 1st September 2020.

Govt sets up group under cyber security head to probe China Watching, will report in 30 days

  • The Government set up an expert committee under the National Cyber Security Coordinator to study the revelations in China Watching, an investigation, that a Shenzen-based company, with links to the Chinese government, is monitoring over 10,000 Indian individuals and entities.
  • The expert committee, led by Lt Gen (retd) Rajesh Pant, India’s chief coordinator on cyber security

FSSAI constitutes task force on vegan food

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) constituted a task force to look into guidelines/ provisions for vegan foods in the country. The task force comprises seven members including Shankar Narayan, founder-president, Satvik Vegan Society (formerly Indian Vegan Society), Bengaluru-Byndoor.

ICT challenge for developing smart supply measurement and monitoring system under Jal Jeevan Mission

  • The government has launched an information and communications technology (ICT) contest to create innovative, modular and cost-effective solution to develop a smart water supply measurement and monitoring system to be deployed at the village level.

India walks out of SCO meet after Pakistan projects fictitious map

  • India walked out of a meeting of the National Security Advisors of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member countries in protest after the Pakistani representative used a “fictitious” map showing Indian territories as part of Pakistan. Hosted by the chair of the SCO (Russia).

India joins Djibouti Code of Conduct/ Jeddah Amendment as Observer

  • India has joined the Djibouti Code of Conduct/ Jeddah Amendment, DCOC/JA, as Observer. DCOC/JA is a grouping on maritime matters comprising 18 member states adjoining the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, the East Coast of Africa and Island countries in the Indian Ocean Region. India has joined Japan, Norway, the UK and the US as Observers to the DCOC/JA.

Global Preparedness Monitoring Board (GPMB) releases report ‘A WORLD IN DISORDER’

  • It would take 500 years to spend as much on preparedness as the world is currently losing due to COVID-19. The world cannot afford this cycle of panic and neglect.
  • The world simply cannot afford to be unprepared again, warns the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board (GPMB) in its second report ‘A World in Disorder’, released.

RBI mandates automated recognition of NPAs, provisioning by June 2021

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) mandated the automation of bad-loan recognition by banks by June 30, 2021.
  • Banks had earlier been advised to have appropriate information technology (IT) systems in place for identification of non-performing assets (NPA) and generation of related data/returns, both for regulatory reporting and banks’ own management information system (MIS) requirements.

Kazakhstan Financial Regulator Cancels Licence of PNB Subsidiary

  • In line with global agencies, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) lowered GDP (Gross Domestic Product) forecast to negative 9 per cent for FY 2020-21. Earlier it has projected growth of 4 per cent during the fiscal.

UBS Securities sees GDP contracting 8.6 per cent this fiscal

  • UBS Securities sees India’s real GDP contracting 6 per cent this fiscal, down from the previously estimated contraction level of 5.8 per cent, its Chief India Economist Tanvee Gupta Jain stated.

Madhya Pradesh: Central discom first to adopt e-office in India

  • Madhya Kshetra Vidyut Vitran Company (central discom) has become the first power distribution company in the country to adopt e-office system. It is effectively being run in corporate office, offices of regional chief general manager and circles. The company has been e-filing and doing correspondence through NIC e-office system from 27 July.

J&K Horticulture Dept launches “Backyard Horticulture” programme under CAPEX scheme in Jammu district

  • In Jammu and Kashmir, the Horticulture Department has launched the Flagship programme “Backyard Horticulture” under CAPEX scheme at Panchyat Jaswan in Marh block of Jammu district.
