  • India’s largest reclining statue of Lord Buddha is being built in Bodh Gaya, Bihar.
  • It will be open for devotees next year.

About the statue :

  • Built by Buddha International Welfare Mission, the statue will be 100 feet long and 30 feet high.
  • Lord Buddha is in the sleeping posture in the statue.
  • The construction of the giant statue started in the year 2019.
  • It is being made with fiberglass and built by sculptors from Kolkata.

Important :

  • The idol of Lord Buddha is in Mahaparinirvana Mudra which has great importance in Buddhism. Before Mahaparinirvana, Lord Buddha preached to his disciples in this posture.
  • The idol of this posture of Lord Buddha is in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar where he attained his Mahaparinirvana.
  • The giant statue of Lord Buddha will be open for devotees from February 2023.

About Bodh Gaya :

  • Bodh Gaya is a religious site and place of pilgrimage associated with the Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Gaya district in the Indian state of Bihar.
  • It is famous as it is the place where Gautama Buddha is said to have attained Enlightenment under what became known as the Bodhi Tree.
  • Since antiquity, Bodh Gaya has remained the object of pilgrimage and veneration both for Hindus and Buddhists.
  • In particular, archaeological finds including sculptures show that the site was in use by Buddhists since the Mauryan period.
