Answers :
Directions (1-5) :
1) Answer: D
Option A doesn’t work as the 1st blank seems to indicate a negative sentiment going by the rest of the passage but “confident’’ is a positive sounding term.
Option B doesn’t work because of the 2nd blank. UGC being the regulator, it is unlikely that it will “request” universities. Also “on the same book” is not a right use.
Option C has grammatical problems. Option D is also ruled out because there is no expression called “on the same coach”.
Option D is the perfect fit.
Hence, option D is the right answer.
2) Answer: B
Option A doesn’t fit since the term for the 1st blank itself is not making sense.
Option C also gets ruled out as “participants” needs to be followed by the preposition “of”.
The term for the 2nd blank in option D is illogical so it is easily ruled out. The 1st and 3rd terms in option E don’t make contextual sense.
All the terms in Option B fit perfectly.
Hence option B is correct.
3) Answer: E
The term for the 2nd blank rules out option A.
None of the terms in option B make sense so we can discard it. The 2nd and 3rd terms work in option C but the 1st one is not making logical sense so that also is ruled out.
The 2nd term in option D is not fitting at all.
All the terms in Option E fit perfectly.
Hence option E is correct.
4) Answer: C
In option A, while the 1st and 3rd terms can work, the 2nd one doesn’t both grammatically as well as contextually. So we can reject option A.
Option B also can be rejected likewise as the 2nd term is not making any logical sense.
Both the 2nd and 3rd terms are ill fitting in option D. So that is also ruled out. The 1st term of option E is illogical with the context.
The only option where all 3 terms fit in the respective blanks is option C
Hence option C is correct.
5) Answer: A
We can see “an” before the 3rd blank. Therefore, the term there has to start with a vowel. So, we can rule out options B and E.
The word for the 2nd blank in option C doesn’t make contextual or grammatical sense so this can be ruled out. Between options A and D, the terms in the first one fit much better in all the blank spaces.
Hence, option A is correct.
Directions (6-10) :
6) Answer: D
The error is in section D. Here, the verb “adjust” needed to be in present participle form i.e. adjusting.
The corrected sentence would be: The department of telecom had earlier estimated the company’s AGR dues at Rs 58, 254 crores for a period up to 2016/17 but the telco had put up the dues at Rs 46, 000 crores after adjusting of certain computational errors and payments made in the past.
Hence, option D is the correct answer.
7) Answer: D
The part of the paragraph in part D is not fully correct. The term know-why means understanding of the reasons or causes underlying an incident or a phenomena. Such action is not required or relevant in the scenario described. Therefore, the correct term to use would be knowledge.
The corrected sentence would be: The White House and Senate Republicans are at odds over the amount of funding that should be given to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the next round of stimulus spending, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told CNN on Saturday.
Hence, option D is the correct answer.
8) Answer: E
The given passage is perfectly fine and requires no correction.
Hence, option E is the correct answer.
9) Answer: A
The problem lies in part A. The given passage is in past tense but the verb used in part A is in present tense thus creating a contradiction.
The correct passage would be: ECB, on their part, had said that Archer made an unauthorized visit to his home on Monday when the players should have travelled straight from Southampton to Manchester in their individual cars. That stop off in Brighton violated the bio-secure protocols in place. He was subsequently left out of the playing XI for the ongoing second Test against the West Indies at Old Trafford.Hence, option A is the correct answer.
10) Answer: B
The expression “draws the dots” in part B is not correct. The right expression is joining the dots or connecting the dots – which mean associate one idea/trend with another and thus reveal a bigger design/picture of events. If this is replaced, then the sentence would be perfect.
The correct sentence would be: Seen from a larger perspective, one cannot miss reading the ever-expanding Chinese footprint on Iran’s decision if one joins the dots of China’s other expansionist activities in many sectors of Asia and against the background of the impending China-Iran deal involving a colossal package worth $400 billion to be spread over the next two decades-and-a-half.
Hence, option B is the correct answer.
