Direction (1-5): Five statements labelled A, B, C, 1 and 2 are given below. Among them, statements A, B and C are in the correct order. Identify the positions of 1 and 2 so as to make a logically coherent paragraph.

1) A) The arrest of Arnab Goswami, editor-in-chief of Republic Media Network, is, without doubt, a high-handed action that may contain an element of vendetta.

B) There was really no reason to arrest Mr. Goswami, or any other citizen for that matter, in a case that has been reopened after being formally closed by a competent court in 2019.

C) It might be true that the police then may have, under political influence, unlawfully closed a complaint that Mr. Goswami and two others had abetted the suicide of Anvay Naik, an interior designer in May 2018, and that there may be sufficient cause for it to be investigated afresh.

1) However, there is no reason to arrest anyone, unless they are likely to evade trial, threaten witnesses or destroy evidence.

2) Given the presence of an incriminating suicide note, there may be some substance in the allegation.

2) A)
There have been no major shocks on the solidly “red” and “blue” States, which have a history of voting for only one party and are nearly impossible to flip.

B) Among the swing States, whose electoral college votes are up for grabs, the performance of the two candidates has been mixed.

C) At the latest count, a Trump victory appears certain in Florida, Ohio and Iowa and he is holding on to a lead, perhaps provisionally, in the critical States of Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, with several mail ballots yet to be tallied.

1) Meanwhile, Mr. Biden has consolidated his position by racing to victory in Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Virginia, while holding on to counting leads in Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin and Michigan.

2) The mammoth task of vote counting is still under way in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, leaving the final outcome uncertain in the contest between incumbent Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger and former Vice President Joe Biden.

3) A)
It was ironic, then, that a relatively peaceful election exercise in the world’s oldest democracy was overshadowed by Mr. Trump himself, who took a distinctly authoritarian turn when he claimed falsely that he had already defeated Mr. Biden, particularly that he had won the Rust Belt States, which in reality are still counting millions of votes, likely the surge in mail-in ballots.

B) He went on to complain that the 2020 election was being stolen from him through a major fraud, reiterating his vow to take the matter expediently to the Supreme Court.

C) There are three broad observations regarding this turn of events.

1) Stepping back from the results, the big win for American democracy as such was that no major outbreak of violence or voter suppression occurred throughout the final phases of polling.

2)  Perhaps the absence of civil unrest was a testament to the spirit of a nation seeking to move past hateful ethnic, racial and religious divisions of its recent past.

4) A)
Chief Justice S.A. Bobde appeared convinced that the ECI has no such power, and ordered a stay on its order. Mr. Nath earned the ECI’s rebuke after a distasteful personal remark about a BJP woman candidate while campaigning for a by-election to the Madhya Pradesh Assembly recently.

B) The Commission’s order dated October 30 said it was revoking his status as a leader of a political party (star campaigner).

C) Section 77 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which relates to a candidate’s election expenditure, does leave it to the political party itself to decide who its “leaders” are and allows every party to submit a list of such ‘star campaigners’ to the election authorities.

1) However, it should be noted that the ‘star campaigner’ status comes with a clear privilege: the expenditure incurred on the campaign done by those from the list of star campaigners is not included in the expenditure of the candidate concerned.

2) The Supreme Court’s stay on the revocation of the status of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath as a ‘star campaigner’ for the Congress brings to the fore the power of the Election Commission of India and its role in ensuring a clean campaign.

5) A)
It stands to reason that the ECI, in exercise of its general and plenary power of control and direction over elections, ought to have the power to revoke the status of a campaigner, if there is an apparent breach of campaign norms or the Model Code of Conduct.

B) After all, the star status ensures that some leaders can charter helicopters and travel extensively to cover more territory and constituencies without breaching any individual candidate’s spending limit.

C) The ECI has cited the clause in the MCC that bars candidates from resorting to “criticism of all aspects of the private life, not connected with the public activities” of other leaders and party workers.

1) Even though the model code is not statutory, it has been generally recognised that the election watchdog should have some means of enforcing its norms.

2)  In past orders, the ECI has cited the Supreme Court’s observation that when laws are absent, the ECI can invoke its residuary power to meet an infinite variety of situations that cannot be foreseen by lawmarkers.

6) The astounding proposal by Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to enact a law to curb what they call ‘love jihad’ reeks of a vicious mix of patriarchy and communalism. Propounded by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the detestable idea amounts to legitimising a term that constitutes a blatant slur against inter-faith marriages and relationships in which one of the parties is a Muslim man.

Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

  1. Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are opposing inter-faith marriages and relationships.

Although the court strayed from the issue at hand, its objective was to underscore that conversion should not become a device. It is indeed salutary as a principle that inter-faith couples retain their religious beliefs separately and opt for marriage under the Special Marriage Act.

Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

  1. The court seeks to ask questions about the harmony in inter-faith marriages.
  2. The court did a meek act is solving the 2014 case.

  5. None of the above

Answers :

1) Answer: B

The fragment as sentence A is clearly a starting sentence, which describes a fact or incident depending upon which the whole paragraph will be depicted. It is correctly followed by B and C. Statement in sentence 1 clearly seems as conclusive one, since it uses the word however that is contradicting its previous statement on sentence 2, it is again agreeing the first sentence.

Therefore, option B is the correct answer.

2) Answer: B

Understanding the passage it is clear that statement 2 is clearly the introductory sentence, as again it underlines a fact or happening, which will be the cornerstone for the paragraph’s discussion. Again sentence 1 is clearly the conclusive sentence, since when we compare with statement C it becomes more obvious as the latter highlights Trump’s consolidation, while the former shows Biden’s. And as per the nature of the question A, B and C are correspondence.

Therefore, option B is the correct answer.

3) Answer: C

Learning all the statements it is clear that sentence 1 will be the introductory statement as it again highlights an incident to which the whole paragraph evolves. It is rightly followed by statement 2, as it extends the former sentence by citing the reason for such incident mentioned in sentence 1. Followed by A, B and C as sentence A started showing how the so called peaceful election exercise was partially disrupted by President Donald Trump himself with false claims. This then rightly followed by B and C as all A, B and C are in correct sequence.

Therefore, option C is the correct answer.

4) Answer: D

Learning the statements it is clear that sentence 2 is the introductory sentence as it describes a decision by Supreme Court followed by its consequences. This is the fact to which the whole paragraph is describing.  Statement A seems to follow as, it highlights the detailed explanations about the fact, which was spoken in sentence 2. Clearly, then statement A comes next to the introductory sentence followed by B and C. As of conclusion it is sentence 1, which contradicts with sentence C has done rightfully justice to its mentioned word however.

Therefore, option D is the correct answer.

5) Answer: B

Learning the sentences statement A seems perfect fit as introductory sentence as the whole paragraph revolves around the fact or model highlighted in this sentence. This is then rightly followed by B and C. In context to the conclusive sentence it appears sentence 2 to be more fitting than sentence 1 as, sentence speaks about the model code of conduct which was described in sentence A, B and C clearly makes it as the following sentence after those three. Then, the only remaining sentence is sentence 2, which cites about past, gets to be the conclusive sentence.

Therefore, option B is the correct answer.

6) Answer: A

The first inference is only correct in accordance with the passage.

The second inference is incorrect as, there is no such evidence mentioned in the passage that inter-faith relationships have caused harm to the society.

The third inference is incorrect as, it highlights the support towards the inter-faith relationships from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana is completely contradicting to the above passage.

The fourth inference is incorrect as, it is correctly mentioned in the passage regarding the Chief Minister’s propound, which blatant slur against inter-faith marriages and relationships in which one of the parties is a Muslim man though gives us some insights about his dislikes against inter-faith marriages but do not clearly draw any lines in his likings. Thus, this option is again out of context.

Therefore, option A is the correct answer.

7) Answer: D

The first inference is incorrect as, there is no where mentioned in the passages about court’s interrogations regarding harmony and peace.

The second inference is incorrect as, there is insufficient evidence about the 2014’s case and its verdict.

The third inference is incorrect as, the court’s objective was to find that inter-faith marriages do not become a conversion tool and not to identify them as conversion tool.

Only the fourth inference is closest with the context clearly explains the passage.

Therefore, option D is the correct answer.

8) Answer: D

The first inference is incorrect, as there is insufficient information about European hospitality in this passage.

The second inference is incorrect, as it seems the passage is a part undertaken from a larger passage, thus there can be a possibility of mentioning about the protests, but as far this passage is concerned no such issues is highlighted.

The third inference is incorrect as, attacks do not highlight fragile security infrastructure on the other hand there is nothing mentioned about security details in the passage.

Only the inference in the fourth option seems correct with the context explaining the details mentioned in the passage.

Therefore, option D is the correct answer.

9) Answer: D

Let us understand the meaning of each option

A: showing a disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others; unselfish.

B: modelled on or aiming for a state in which everything is perfect; idealistic.

C: not conspicuous or attracting attention.

D: holding firmly to an opinion or a course of action.

As we can easily infer Mr. Kurz strong and determined political nature and opinion, it seems only option D is close with the context.

Therefore, option D is the correct answer.

10) Answer: D

The first inference is incorrect, as there is no mention of economic improvement in the passage, rather it was mentioned the considering a full fledged recovery can be premature.

The second inference is incorrect as there are no mentions of policies in the passage

The third inference is incorrect as, the data of September-October according to economists can be due to festive season, thus no mention of stepping stone towards improvement is done.

Only fourth inference is with the context explaining the exact same way how the economists are viewing the data.

Therefore, option D is the correct answer.
