Answers :
Directions (1-5) :
1) Answer: B
Note that the given sentence is in past continuous form which would rule out A and E. Of the remaining options, B. following is the one that makes the most sense in the given context. So, B. is the correct answer
2) Answer: D
Note that the verb before the blank (contacted) is in past tense. Therefore, the verb to follow in the blank must also be in past tense to form a present perfect tense. Therefore, ‘advised’, ‘confirmed’ and ‘deliberated’ are the only three that fit this criterion. Of the 3, D. confirmed is the only one that fits the context. So, D. is the correct answer.
3) Answer: A
Since the statement was made earlier in the week, therefore the verb must be in the past tense. This A and E are the only logical options.Of them, E. is not making sense in the context. Thus, option A is the correct answer.
4) Answer: C
If we read the sentence carefully, we can see that due to high summer temperatures, walking in summer is being asked against. Going by that, C. recommended makes the most sense as ‘not recommended’ would imply advising not to do something. So, C. is the correct answer.
5) Answer: B
Look at the sentence carefully. Options C, D and E don’t work here since there is a ‘to’ after the blank and checked to / read to / discussed to makes no sense. Therefore, it has to be between A and B. If it were to be A, then the sentence would be ‘you have answered all the emails….’. The presence of ‘to’ means that ‘responded to’ will be the right fit here. So, B. is the correct answer.
Directions (6-10) :
6) Answer: B
The principal clause in this sentence is ‘I will go to play’ whereas the subordinate clause is one we need to correctly identify. When the principal clause is in future tense, then the subordinate clause will be in present tense. If we see the given options, only the subordinate clause given in option B is in present tense.
Hence B is the correct answer choice.
7) Answer: D
Here, the ‘if’ or conditional clause is Shami giving away runs in the last over while the ‘main’ or outcome clause is India losing the match.
The conditional clause should be in past perfect tense while the outcome clause should be in perfect continuous tense.
In the given statement, both are in perfect continuous tense.
To make the sentence correct, we need to make the conditional clause into past perfect tense. Going by that rule, ‘if Shami hadn’t given away so many runs..” fits in perfectly.
Hence option D is the correct answer choice.
8) Answer: B
While using names of common places like school, college, market, temple etc. we don’t use the article “the” before them.
The only situation where “the” will be used is if it is used for secondary purpose. For e.g. My father’s office is just after the temple
Thus, option B is the correct answer choice here.
9) Answer: C
Only infinitives can be used after certain verbs when followed by a noun or pronoun referring to a person is used. In such cases, a gerund cannot be used.
Eg:-Can I ask you to help me (correct) | Can I ask you helping me (incorrect).
The sentence given above contains this mistake as the verb ‘asked’ is followed by the pronoun ‘her’. So instead of not ‘going’, the correct construct would be not ‘to go’
Hence option C is the correct answer choice.
10) Answer: D
The first part of the sentence tells us that it will be in future perfect tense. Future perfect tense indicates actions that have not yet occurred but will occur and be completed in the future. To form future perfect tense correctly, we need subject (By this time tomorrow) + will have + past participle of verb (‘finished’ the project)
Hence, the given sentence is incorrect and will be corrected if the word “will” is placed between ‘I’ and ‘have’.
Therefore option D is the correct answer choice.
