Direction (1-5): Study the information given below and answer the questions based on it.
Eight persons A, B, C, D, H, I, J and K are staying in an eight storey building. Lowermost floor is numbered 1 and topmost floor is numbered 8. Two consecutive alphabets naming persons cannot stay to adjacent floor i.e. A cannot stay adjacent floors to B, B cannot stay adjacent floors to A or C but D can stay adjacent floor to H. Their ages are i.e. 17, 22, 25, 28, 29, 33, 34 and 40, not necessarily in the same order.
(Note: The person whose age is an odd number is staying at odd numbered floor and the person whose age is an even number is staying at even numbered floor). D is 33 years old. The number of person is staying above D is same as below H. C lives just above the one who is 17 years old. Two persons are staying between H and the one who is 17 years old. H lives above the one who is 17 years old. A is 29 years old. Only one person is elder to K. One person stays between B and K. K lives above B. B is elder to K but doesn’t stay on 2nd floor.

Explanation
Direction (1-5)
C lives just above the one who is 17 years old. Two persons are staying between H and the one who is 17 years old. As we know the one who is 17 years must live on an odd number floor and we know that H lives above the one who is 17 years old. So the one who is 17 years old can stay on 1st, 3rd and 5th floor.
Case 1: if the one who is 17 years old stays on 3rd floor-
Then H lives on 6th floor and we know that the number of person is staying above D is same as below H. Five persons are staying below H so D must stay on 3rd floor but D is 33 years old and the one who is 17 years old stays on 3rd floor so this case gets rejected.
Case 2: if the one who is 17 years old stays on 5th floor-
Then H lives on 8th floor and we know that the number of person is staying above D is same as below H. Seven persons are staying below H so D must stay on 1st floor and C lives on 6th floor.
Floor | Person | Age |
8 | H | |
7 | ||
6 | C | |
5 | 17 | |
4 | ||
3 | ||
2 | ||
1 | D | 33 |
Only one person is elder to K. So K is 34 years old and B is elder to K so B is 40 years old it means they both are staying on an even numbered floor. As we know B cannot stay on 2nd floor. So B must stay on 4th floor. One person stays between B and K. K lives above B. So this case gets rejected because C lives on 6th floor.
Floor | Person | Age |
8 | H | |
7 | ||
6 | C | |
5 | 17 | |
4 | B | 40 |
3 | ||
2 | ||
1 | D | 33 |
Case 3: if the one who is 17 years old stays on 1st floor-
Then H lives on 4th floor and we know that the number of person is staying above D is same as below H. Three persons are staying below H so D must stay on 5th floor and C lives on 2nd floor.
Floor | Person | Age |
8 | ||
7 | ||
6 | ||
5 | D | 33 |
4 | H | |
3 | ||
2 | C | |
1 | 17 |
Only one person is elder to K. So K is 34 years old and B is elder to K so B is 40 years old it means they both are staying on an even numbered floor. As we know B cannot stay on 2nd floor. One person stays between B and K. K lives above B. So B must stay on 6th floor and K lives on 8th floor.
As A is 29 years old so A must stay on an odd numbered floor. So A is either lives on 7th or 3rd floor but B lives on 6th floor so A cannot live on 7th floor because their names are consecutive alphabets then A lives on 3rd floor. J cannot stay adjacent to K so J lives on 1st floor and I lives on 7th floor. I lives on odd numbered floor then I is 25 years old. H is younger to C. So H is 22 years old and C is 28 years old.
Here is the final table:
Floor | Person | Age |
8 | K | 34 |
7 | I | 25 |
6 | B | 40 |
5 | D | 33 |
4 | H | 22 |
3 | A | 29 |
2 | C | 28 |
1 | J | 17 |
J is the youngest person.
Hence, option B.
H is 22 years old and one person is staying between B and H.
Hence, option B.
A lives on 3rd floor.
Hence, option C.
C lives on 2nd floor.
Hence, option A.
I= 25 years , J=17 years
I+J=25+17=42
Hence, option D.
